December 31, 2013 - "Reno 911!" creators Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon write and direct Hell Baby. This horror comedy stars Rob Corddry and Leslie Bibb as an expectant couple that moves into a possibly haunted New Orleans home, where strange things happen. Garant and Lennon play Vatican priests assigned to investigate supernatural phenomena, while Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer, and Keegan-Michael Key co-star. After a very limited theatrical run, Millennium brought the film to DVD and Blu-ray in an unrated cut. The disc adds two gag reels, a trailer, and nearly half an hour of deleted/extended scenes. December 30, 2013 - The drama Last Love stars Michael Caine and Clιmence Poιsy (Harry Potter's Fleur Delacour) as two strangers who form a fast, unlikely, and special friendship in Paris. Co-starring Justin Kirk and Gillian Anderson, this unrated limited theatrical release hits home video tomorrow joined by 16 minutes of deleted scenes and 10 minutes of outtakes. Our Blu-ray review.
The western Sweetwater stars four-time Oscar nominee Ed Harris as a salty sheriff, "Mad Men"'s January Jones as a former call girl, and Jason Isaacs (the Harry Potter series) as a bigamist preacher. Their paths cross in deadly ways in the late-19th century frontier. December 29, 2013 - Our newest review covers The Lone Ranger, Disney's summer box office disappointment. The classic hero of radio, film serials, and television is reinvented in the mold of Pirates of the Caribbean by producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski. Johnny Depp stars as Tonto, who tells the story of his adventures with a masked Texas ranger (Armie Hammer) and a vicious outlaw (William Fichtner). December 28, 2013 - Today's new Blu-ray review looks at Matilda. This 1996 adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel stars Mara Wilson (Mrs. Doubtfire) as a brilliant young girl with lousy parents (Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman). She uses her newly-discovered gifts to help her teacher Miss Honey (Embeth Davidtz) and stand up to the horrible headmaster Trunchbull (Pam Ferris). Now available, Sony's Blu-ray adds a 21-minute cast and crew reunion to Wilson's on-set documentary, additional making-of featurettes, and Digital HD UltraViolet. Our review.
December 25, 2013 - Now in theaters just in time for awards consideration and year-end lists is The Wolf of Wall Street, the latest collaboration between Leonardo DiCaprio and director Martin Scorsese. DiCaprio plays Jordan Belfort, a young New Yorker who quickly strikes it rich by selling penny stocks to the desperate. Belfort's lifestyle of excesses threatens to come tumbling down when federal authorities begin investigating him for fraud. A month later than planned, this outrageous, comedic true story finally checks in with a hard R rating and a nearly three-hour runtime. Read our review.
Also opening today, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty stars Ben Stiller as a daydreaming Life magazine employee who travels the world in search of the photograph that might serve as the publication's final cover image. Stiller also directed this PG-rated fantasy adventure, which co-stars Kristen Wiig, Sean Penn, and Adam Scott, from a script by Steve Conrad (The Pursuit of Happyness). Dream on with our review.
December 24, 2013 - Our Christmas Eve review covers Flicker Alley's recent Blu-ray + DVD release of South Seas Adventure, a 1958 Cinerama travelogue that takes you to Hawaii, New Zealand, and Australia. Orson Welles narrates part of this feature, whose original photography is upheld in a Smilebox simulation. The two-disc set adds audio commentary, a vintage making-of featurette, two interviews, a photo slideshow, the Cinerama short Renault Dauphine, and the trailer. December 23, 2013 - Of tomorrow's few new Blu-ray and DVD releases, the biggest is unquestionably Insidious: Chapter 2. Director James Wan (The Conjuring) and screenwriter Leigh Whannell (Saw) revisit the subject of their 2011 low-budget hit involving the supernatural disturbance of a family of four (headed by Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne). Sony's Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD UltraViolet combo pack holds over an hour of bonus features including making-of featurettes, an on-set cast & crew Q & A, and three "Spectral Sightings" web shorts. Another demanded catalog Fox title hits Blu-ray looking terrific in the studio's recent release of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. This romantic dramatic fantasy finds a young widow (Gene Tierney) moving into a house where she is haunted by its former owner, a late sea captain (Rex Harrison). This 1947 film, which later inspired a 1960s sitcom, is now available to own with two audio commentaries and its original trailer. Full review.
December 22, 2013 - We look at The Criterion Collection's recent Blu-ray debut of Grey Gardens. The 1976 Maysles Brothers documentary that inspired an Emmy-winning HBO movie spends time with the eccentric Big Edie and Little Edie Beale, a mother and daughter related to Jackie Onassis who live among wild cats and raccoons in a decaying 28-room Long Island mansion. The film is joined by audio commentary, the 2006 follow-up film The Beales of Grey Gardens, scrapbooks, trailers, interviews, and an essay booklet. Our full review.
December 20, 2013 - Today, we take a look at two awards contenders expanding to nationwide theatrical release.
Director David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, The Fighter) extends his hot streak with American Hustle, a film based on the FBI's Abscam sting operation of the 1970s. A con artist (Christian Bale) and his moll (Amy Adams) are pushed into aiding an undercover federal agent (Bradley Cooper) uncover large-scale corruption in public officials. Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner co-star in one of 2013's most esteemed and acknowledged films. Full review.
Saving Mr. Banks dramatizes the difficulties that Walt Disney's studio faced in the 1960s while trying to make Mary Poppins in a way that satisfied the book series' author P.L. Travers. The Blind Side's John Lee Hancock directs Emma Thompson (Travers) and Tom Hanks (Walt) in this PG-13 drama named one of the year's ten best films by the American Film Institute and the National Board of Review. December 19, 2013 - Formerly Best Buy exclusive, The "Rich Mahogany" Edition Blu-ray of Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is now available in general retail. This oft-quoted, rewatchable 2004 comedy stars Will Ferrell as a 1970s San Diego newscaster who has difficulty adapting to a woman (Christina Applegate) being made his co-anchor. Co-written by Ferrell and director Adam McKay (Step Brothers, The Other Guys) and produced by Judd Apatow, this popular film features Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, and a host of cameos. Paramount's two-disc Blu-ray includes theatrical and unrated cuts of the film as well as the "lost movie" Wake Up, Ron Burgundy compiled from deleted and alternate scenes. Several hours of additional extras include Burgundy's MTV Movie Award interviews, two variations of the same random audio commentary, nearly an additional hour of deleted & extended scenes, bloopers, alternate takes, Burgundy's SportsCenter audition, the cast's audition tapes, table reads, rehearsal footage, trailers, and an "Afternoon Delight" music video. The box also adds Ron's personal diary "The Many Months of Burgundy", a pack of 12 character trading cards, and $7.50 in Movie Cash to see Anchorman 2. December 18, 2013 - Robert Altman's 1975 film Nashville recently came to Blu-ray via the Criterion Collection and we've got a review. Juggling twenty-four lead characters, this celebrated ensemble drama looks at the personal and professional lives of established and aspiring musicians in Tennessee's capital, where a presidential candidate is campaigning. Consisting of one Blu-ray and two DVDs, this Dual Format Edition includes a new hour-long making-of documentary, Altman's 2000 audio commentary, three interviews of the director, a trailer, and Keith Carradine's demos of his Oscar-winning song and other original compositions. December 13, 2013 - In a move unrelated to last week's Disney acquisition of the franchise's future, the first three Indiana Jones movies get their first standalone Blu-ray releases next Tuesday from Paramount. We take a look Raiders of the Lost Ark, the 1981 blockbuster that began the Harrison Ford adventure series. Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by George Lucas, the classic is joined by three high definition trailers plus Digital HD. Our review.
A series that began in 2001 continues to reach new heights in Fast & Furious 6. This blockbuster sequel reunites Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) and company for a London mission that involves their presumed dead old friend (Michelle Rodriguez). Dwayne Johnson, director Justin Lin, and screenwriter Chris Morgan all return from the previously high, Fast Five. December 11, 2013 - After four releases on DVD, Disney's Mary Poppins has finally hit Blu-ray in a 50th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy combo pack. A year early of that milestone, this multiple Academy Award-winning 1964 musical fantasy reaches high definition with four Mary-oke animated song lyric shorts and a new conversation between Jason Schwartzman and Richard Sherman, the songwriter he plays in Saving Mr. Banks. December 10, 2013 - A year after its long overdue DVD debut, Cecil B. DeMille's Samson and Delilah will reach Blu-ray Disc from Paramount Home Entertainment on March 11th. Starring Hedy Lamarr, Victor Mature, George Sanders, and Angela Lansbury, this 1949 Biblical drama will carry a $22.99 list price and apparently no extras. December 9, 2013 - Billy Bob Thornton returns to both sides of the camera as director, actor, and co-writer of Jayne Mansfield's Car. In 1969, the death of a woman brings her British family to meet her prior one in small-town Alabama for her funeral. Featuring Robert Duvall, John Hurt, Kevin Bacon, Robert Patrick, and Ray Stevenson, this period drama hits Blu-ray and DVD tomorrow with a making-of featurette. The Australian drama Adore stars Naomi Watts and Robin Wright as lifelong best friends who become romantically involved with one another's sons (Xavier Samuel, James Frecheville). December 6, 2013 - Bill Cosby: ...Far from Finished is the legendary comic's first new special in thirty years. Closely following its Comedy Central premiere, this California performance hits home video in an extended 95-minute cut, finding Cosby talking about marriage and family. December 4, 2013 - Our newest Blu-ray review looks at The Call of the Wild, a 1935 adaptation of Jack London's novel. In 1900 Yukon, Clark Gable, Loretta Young, and Jack Oakie form a trio in search of a supposedly prosperous gold claim. Their adventures include an arrogant prospector and a lovable giant St. Bernard. December 3, 2013 - Seven years after premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, the horror movie All the Boys Love Mandy Lane finally hit DVD and Blu-ray today. From the director of Warm Bodies and 50/50, this film stars a teenaged Amber Heard as the desired titular high school student. She joins five classmates on a weekend getaway in a remote country ranch, where, needless to say, things get strange. Anchor Bay's Blu-ray includes a commentary from director Jonathan Levine. Another awards contender has scheduled a Blu-ray and DVD release for the week of the Golden Globes. The Weinstein Company and Anchor Bay Entertainment have announced that Lee Daniels' The Butler will be released on January 14th as a single-disc DVD ($29.98 SRP), a single-disc Blu-ray ($34.99 SRP), and a two-disc Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD UltraViolet combo pack ($39.99 SRP). Extras will include deleted scenes, a gag reel, the documentary "Lee Daniels' The Butler: An American Story", "The Original Freedom Riders", and "You and I Ain't Nothin' No More" performed by Gladys Knight and Lenny Kravitz. As usual, the last month of the year is a busy one for DVDs and Blu-rays. We'll be covering a dozen of today's new releases, which you can learn about on our December Schedule.
Among them is The Rutles Anthology, VSC's Blu-ray + DVD combo which holds the 1978 telemovie All You Need Is Cash and its 2005 direct-to-video follow-up Can't Buy Me Lunch. Executive produced by Lorne Michaels, the two films celebrate the faux Liverpudlian band The Rutles, a group that bears deliberate resemblance to The Beatles. Monty Python's Eric Idle wrote, directed, and stars in these mockumentaries, which include appearances by the likes of Mick Jagger, Bill Murray, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Tom Hanks, Conan O'Brien, Robin Williams, Jimmy Fallon, and Jewel. Frozen - Disney's 53rd animated feature loosely fashions Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Snow Queen into a Broadway-style musical adventure. After a childhood accident, Anna grows up not knowing her older sister Elsa has powers. From a director of Tarzan and Surf's Up, a writer of Wreck-It Ralph, and a creator of Avenue Q and Book of Mormon, the film features the voices of Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, and Jonathan Groff. The feature is preceded by Get a Horse!, an Oscar-shortlisted new Mickey Mouse animated short that's partly in the style of his earliest cartoons.
Nebraska - This highly acclaimed comedy-drama directed by Alexander Payne (Sideways, The Descendants) tells the story of a middle-aged Montana man (Will Forte) taking his aging father (Bruce Dern) on a road trip to Lincoln, Nebraska to collect a million dollars he believes he's won. Co-starring June Squibb, Bob Odenkirk, and Stacy Keach, this black and white indie is sure to compete in this year's Academy Awards.
Thor: The Dark World - Adding to the fast-growing canon of Marvel Studios crowdpleasers, this sequel reunites the powerful Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and his mortal love Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and reawakens a war between Asgardians and Dark Elves.
Captain Phillips - Tom Hanks fills the title role in this newest docudrama from director Paul Greengrass (United 93, The Bourne Ultimatum), which tells the true story of an American cargo ship that in 2009 was hijacked by a band of four Somali pirates.
Gravity - Strands two American astronauts (Sandra Bullock and George Clooney) in space with no communication and no obvious way home. Co-written and directed by Alfonso Cuarσn (Children of Men, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban), this visually striking thriller kicks off the award season with some of the best reviews of the year.

Iron Man & Hulk: Heroes United (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) - This direct-to-video animated movie pits two of Marvel's Avengers against the electrical force Zzzax. The World's End (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD UltraViolet) - Writer-director Edgar Wright reunites with his Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz collaborators Simon Pegg and Nick Frost to complete their Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy. This one seems a troubled stunted man (Pegg) reuniting his high school friends (Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan) to recreate their epic 1990 pub crawl, only to find their hometown has changed. One of the most loaded discs of the year, the Blu-ray includes three audio commentaries, a 48-minute making-of documentary, outtakes, a deleted scenes, alternate lines, trailers, TV spots, image galleries, rehearsal footage, VFX breakdown, stunt tapes and more.
Galactic Adventures Double Feature (Blu-ray 3D/2D) - Two short documentaries about NASA's mid-2000s efforts to photograph our solar system share a hybrid disc. Narrated by Al Roker, 3D Sun covers the launch of twin STEREO spacecraft to capture our closest star in 3D. Mars 3D looks at the sending of the remote-operated rovers Spirit and Opportunity to Mars. Image Entertainment's disc adds nine trailers to the feature presentation.
Home Alone: The Holiday Heist - The fifth entry to the family comedy franchise that began with the John Hughes-penned, Christopher Columbus-directed 1990 Macaualay Culkin blockbuster. This one finds a California family, the Baxters, moving to Maine, where a Christmas party and inclement weather keeps them from their 10-year-old son, who's got to defend the place from thieves (Malcolm McDowell, Debi Mazar, and Eddie Steeples) determined to find a priceless Edvard Munch painting hidden there.
Planes (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) - DisneyToon Studios' spin-off to Pixar's Cars universe follows a crop duster into the world of international racing, where he tries to combat a fear of heights. Disney's combo pack includes deleted scenes including a fully-finished song, a making-of featurette, character introductions, and a countdown of the top 10 human flyers.
Pain & Gain (Special Collector's Edition Blu-ray + Digital HD) - Based on a true story, Michael's Bay dark action crime comedy stars Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, and Anthony Mackie as three 1990s Miami bodybuilders who get in over their heads with an extortion plot. The single-disc reissue adds eight featurettes (or, if you prefer, one 58-minute documentary) on the making of this film.
Getaway (Blu-ray + Digital HD UltraViolet) - Action thriller stars Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez as a couple of American strangers in Bulgaria who are commanded to drive a car under surveillance and elude authorities in an effort for Hawke to reunite with his abducted wife. The Blu-ray adds five making-of shorts and UltraViolet.
Paranoia (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) - Based on the bestselling novel, this PG-13 thriller stars The Hunger Games' Liam Hemsworth as a New York mobile phone engineer forced to perform corporate espionage against a rival telecommunications company. Co-starring Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman, and Amber Heard, this box office flop is joined by deleted scenes, three featurettes, and a trailer.
Frances Ha (The Criterion Collection Blu-ray + DVDs) - Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Greenberg) directs and co-writes this acclaimed black and white comedy about a young woman (co-writer Greta Gerwig) struggling to make it in New York City. One of 2013's best-reviewed films, this is joined by conversations with Baumbach and Peter Bogdanovich, Gerwig and Sarah Polley, and Baumbach and visual collaborators in addition to a trailer and an essay booklet.
We're the Millers (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD UltraViolet) - Hit comedy stars Jason Sudeikis as a drug dealer who poses with neighbors (Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, Will Poulter) as a vacationing family to make an across-the-border smuggling easier. It's now available in a combo pack that presents the film in theatrical and extended cuts along with deleted and extended scenes, outtakes, and a number of making-of featurettes.
"Magic City": The Complete Second Season (Blu-ray) - The final eight episodes of Starz's acclaimed 1950s-set drama look further at the complications surrounding Ike Evans' (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) glamorous Miami motel, his family (Olga Kurylenko, Steven Strait, Christian Cooke), and his business associates (Danny Huston and a recurring James Caan). Now available, Anchor Bay's Blu-ray includes a bonus disc with five making-of featurettes.
Oliver! (Blu-ray) - Adapted from Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist and a popular stage show, this 1968 musical won six Academy Awards including Best Picture. It tells the story of a Victorian Era orphan (Mark Lester) who joins a gang of London pickpockets. This Columbia Pictures film hits high definition from Twilight Time in a disc limited to just 3,000 copies. Extras include interviews with Mark Lester and Ron Moody (who landed an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of ringleader Fagin), a vintage behind-the-scenes featurette, sing-alongs, dance-alongs, dance instructions, the original trailer, an isolated score, and an essay booklet.
Violet & Daisy (Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack) - Two New York teenaged girls (Saoirse Ronan and Alexis Bledel) make their living as assassins. Their killer instincts are challenged when a target (James Gandolfini) proves to be anything but routine. From Academy Award-winning Precious screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher, who makes his feature directing debut, this limited release dark crime comedy is joined by a gallery of poster designs and the trailer.
And While We Were Here (Blu-ray) - Independent film stars Kate Bosworth (Blue Crush, Superman Returns) as Jane, an American abroad in Italy with her violist English husband (Iddo Goldberg). While taking in the sights, Jane makes a strong connection with a teenaged American (Jamie Blackley). Written and directed by Kat Coiro (L!fe Happens), this hits Blu-ray with a bonus black and white presentation of the film and a trailer.
Girl Most Likely (Blu-ray + Digital HD UltraViolet) - Independent comedy stars Kristen Wiig as an underachieving New York playwright who returns to her hometown of Ocean City, New Jersey upon losing her boyfriend, her job, her apartment, and maybe her mind. Co-starring Annette Bening, Darren Criss, and Matt Dillon, this Roadshow Attractions release is now joined by deleted scenes, a gag reel, and featurettes on Blu-ray.
I Give It a Year (Blu-ray) - Subverts romantic comedy formula with a look at the challenging first year of marriage for a couple (Rose Byrne, Rafe Spall). Co-starring Anna Faris, Simon Baker, Minnie Driver, and Stephen Merchant, this UK production was written and directed by Borat writer Dan Mazer. Now available, Magnolia's Blu-ray includes over an hour of cast and crew interviews, 15 minutes of deleted scenes, bloopers, outtakes, and making-of shorts.
All Is Bright (Blu-ray + Digital HD UltraViolet) - Indie film stars Paul Giamatti and Paul Rudd as two reformed Canadian thieves who spend December selling Christmas trees in New York City.
