SEPTEMBER 16-30, 2004: NEWS ARCHIVES
September 28, 2004 - At last, our Aladdin Platinum Edition DVD review is now available. With two pages and over fifty pictures, we hope you find this look at the most anticipated Disney DVD release of the year as satisfying as the DVD it covers. Featuring one of the all-time great films, first-rate picture and sound, and "making of" material in unprecedented detail, this 2-disc Aladdin set receives high marks on all regards. Read the full review.
September 27, 2004 - Details are still pretty sparse on the "Lizzie McGuire" Volume 1 Box Set due November 23 (preorder). From what we've gathered, it's supposed to be a 4-disc set with bonus features. Now we know it will contain the first 22 episodes of the Disney Channel series. And here's a look at the box art:

September 22, 2004 - Disney has just issued a press release for The Aladdin II & III Collection, a 2-pack coming January 18, 2005. The set will contain both direct-to-video sequels The Return of Jafar (1994) and Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996), each presented in 1.33:1 fullscreen and Dolby Digital 5.1. Bonus features are scant, and mostly for the youth sect, with a game and "DisneyPedia" featurette on Return and 2 games and a voice talent featurette on Thieves. In addition, both DVDs offer Disney's Song Selection feature. Most redeeming is the relatively low $34.99 SRP. The Aladdin II & III Collection is now available for pre-order at Amazon.com.
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement has also now been formally announced for DVD. Coming December 14th in separate widescreen and fullscreen flavors, the disc will contain an audio commentary with star Julie Andrews and director Garry Marshall, "The PD2 Makeover" princess tips, a "Find Your Inner Princess" Personality Quiz, and a behind-the-scenes look at the film's "cool" music with Raven (and nothing says "cool" like Raven)! As already reported, the DVD will also include bloopers, Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway" music video, and deleted scenes with introductions by Marshall. Read the full press release here. Princess Diaries 2 is up for preorder, 30% off at Amazon.com.
Still no details or a new release date for America's Heart & Soul, but there is now cover art.
September 21, 2004 - Here is the first look at cover art for a little film called Bambi, which comes to DVD on March 1, 2005. (Preorder)

September 19, 2004 - Disney's UK Videos site has assigned dates to DVDs for some of the animated classics due for Platinum re-release. According to the site (and Platinum DVDs have been released semi-concurrently around the world), Lady and the Tramp is due March 2006, The Little Mermaid arrives October 2006, and The Jungle Book comes in March 2007. 101 Dalmatians, not listed at the site, would presumably be left as Fall 2007's Platinum release. As usual, this is subject to change, but next year's two releases are set in stone (for now): Bambi on March 1, and Cinderella on October 4.
September 18, 2004 - New cover art today of two more television box sets coming out November 23: "Boy Meets World" Season 2 and "The Golden Girls" Season 1. For larger pictures, click here.

A brief update on Princess Diaries 2. The DVD will include bloopers, deleted scenes, and Kelly Clarkson's music video for "Breakaway", among "much more." Still waiting on the full press release.
September 17, 2004 - The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement has been officially slated for DVD release on December 14th, in separate widescreen and fullscreen versions (SRP $29.99). A press release with full details should be issued shortly, but in the meantime, enjoy temporary cover art:

The Walt Disney Company has released a list of eleven people to be honored as 2004 Disney Legends, for their contributions to Disney films, theme parks, and television programming. Among the honorees are animator Mel Shaw and actors Tim Conway, Karen Dotrice, and Matthew Garber. Read the full press release.
September 16, 2004 - Our last review of this year's catalogue DVD output is now available. Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates made its debut on two installments of "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" in January of 1962. Over forty years later, our idea of the "made-for-TV movie" has strayed far from the quality that Walt achieved in his first-rate television productions.
Last Thursday, legendary Disney animator Frank Thomas passed away at the age of 92. In a career that spanned five decades, Thomas made significant contributions to Pinocchio, Bambi, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, and The Jungle Book, among many others. In addition, along with close friend and fellow Disney animator Ollie Johnston, Thomas wrote four books in the '80s and '90s. For the full obituary released by Disney, click here.
