The first weekend in May has come to belong to Marvel Studios. Starting with Spider-Man, the film that took comic book movies to new heights in 2002, Marvel has picked that weekend seven times to open one of their adaptations and kick off the exciting summer movie season. Having twice given that desirable timing to each Spider-Man, the X-Men, and Iron Man, this year Marvel chose Thor to launch their busiest summer to date. And launch it did, opening to overwhelmingly positive reviews and giant grosses that only a small handful of subsequent releases could match. The results were pleasing enough for Disney to schedule a sequel, tentatively titled Thor 2, for July 2013 release. That will put Thor, the long-haired Norse god, on the silver screen three consecutive summers, for he is also an integral part, along with Iron Man and Captain America, of next year's dream team line-up The Avengers.

Having ushered in the summer season theatrically, it's only right that now Thor rings in the fall as one of the first major releases of retail and the home video industry's busiest season. Thor hits stores next Tuesday from Paramount Home Entertainment as a single-disc DVD, a two-disc Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy combo, and a three-disc Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy collection. A big-budget event movie like this lends itself to bonus features and Paramount does not disappoint. The Blu-ray disc includes an audio commentary by director Kenneth Branagh, eleven deleted scenes, seven making-of featurettes, "The Road to The Avengers", and a Marvel One-Shot short.
