The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning

Post by Disney Duster »

Okay, actually what Disney's Divinity and Atlantica said are true, I don't know if they just put less effort. But I know that the story and animation are not up to the par of Cinderella III.

Look, just re-watching some more animation I saw how...not good quite a bit of it was. And all these animation experts I talked to see how it's not as good as DisneyToon's last effort. I mean, some of the animation in CIII looked almost exactly like the scenes and backgrounds in the original, made by those masters! I just won't stand for people saying the animation in this prequel was as good as that.

By the way Atlantica, I really don't want to bring you down...I think Ariel (and Triton and Flounder and Sebastian and Ursula) should get something better, really. It's a real shame we can't change it, unless in the future Disney tries to reform, and starts by officially denouncing some sequels or re-making them (like Cinderella II and The Little Mermaid II. Though I like The Little Mermaid II, just not animation wise for the most part).

Also, the whole erasing the last part of Cinderella...I'm going to write more about this sometime, but in this way, you can't accept it as a real continuation of the first movie. It's an altered version. An alernate reality. Not a legitimate continuation like Bambi II or Ariel's Beginning.

Personally I thought Cinderella III was okay, much better than Cinderella II, but no where near the level of The Lion King II which in my opinion is the best Disney straight to video sequel. The songs in Cinderella III were particularly horrible, the lyrics sounded like something from a tv show for pre school kids. Overall I thought it was a very good concept that was executed very poorly. The animation was very good though, I'll say that much, but the very cheesy dialouge overshadowed it. I'm not giving my opinion about TLM III until I see it, but I think it has potential.

'Kay, I just downloaded and uploaded the two "Keep Oceans Clean" TV Spots for TLM3, and also just did "A Night at the Catfish Club", which is the unlockable clip featured on the official website. The first is finished, but the second one might take some time, since I just uploaded it.

I saw a t.v spot for this, I think it was the Catfish Club scene. Good god did it look awful, to me Ariel look way off her face looked kinda like the Joker gave her some of his laughing gas  Also it seemed.....glitchy for some reason.

I think this will be an ok movie, not the greatest but not crap-tastic. I agree with Disney Duster on Cinderella 3 being the best though :)

Siren wrote:I always felt Return of Jafar was more a set up for the series and less a sequel. While King of Thieves was more to close the series. Much as Stitch! opens the series and Leroy and Stitch was closing the series.

Where as TLM2 and TLM3 are true sequels/prequels. Pretty much ignoring TLM series, which I always liked, but they had a backstory for Ariel and Flounder in that one and completely re-wrote it.

Bambi II, Tarzan II and Lion King 1 1/2 were all mid-quels. Movies telling a story that happened within the first movie. Bambi II is by far one of the best sequels, IMO. Animation and story wise. Though I really disliked Thumper in that one. But otherwise, they did very well.

I am not excited about TLM3. Mind you, I think the animation looks good. But the story thus far does not captivate me. Sounds like it starts off good and then goes down hill. I will certainly still buy it and watch it. But I just don't feel excited about it. I just rather not think highly of it, and then be amazed. Rather then be "OMG! I can't wait!" and then be really disappointed.

I agree that the Aladdin sequels and the Stitch sequels.. (Stitch's Glitch is really a "what if" story than an actual sequel IMO) are just T.V pilots and finales.. but I'm extremely glad Al and Jas didn't end up with some kid ..:p :shifty: :headshake: .. though a Genie story in the vein of TLK 1 1/2 would be kinda of cool written and animated correctly , with Rob Williams as Genie (but that'll never happen).. or maybe a young aladdin story (though that would end up as crappy as Tarzan II)..

Mooky: I never knew about Al's six adventures care to share details? and refresh my memory on the Agrabah tales again?

yeah, I'm kinda meh on this one too after years of the other Disney sequels.. I just don't care for additional stories anymore..especially as one as old as TLM..

I'm not even sure if that's the original title of the series, I just like to call it "Six New Adventures" because it's similar to "The Lion King: Six New Adventures". The books are:
- A-Mazing Aladdin
- Jasmine and the Disappearing Tiger
- Abu and the Evil Genie
- Aladdin's Quest
- Don't Bug the Genie!
- The Magic Carpet's Secret

I have only the second book, I found it on the flea market. It says it was published in 1993. This is the plot (from the back of the book):

"Ever heard of Omar and the Four Dates? Aladdin wishes he never had. Omar is a magician who's been invited to perform at the palace. Using magic spells, he makes elephants and dancing ropes appear. That's fun! He also makes Rajah disappear. That spells trouble! To find the disappearing tiger, Aladdin must first rescue Omar from a creepy sheik who's holding him captive. And that's double trouble!"

Anyway, Genie makes an appearance (he returns from his vacation in the Canary Islands :) ) but he goes to Morocco in the end. I suppose that happens in other books too, so it doesn't seem out of place when he returns in "The Return of Jafar". I like how the characters are written, they're completely true to their film counterparts.

"Tales from Agrabah" is the prequel book, you can find more about it here:

I also think that the Aladdin cheapquels are part of the series insted.
And about those books-If it's called Jasmine And The Disappearing Tiger, then they talk about Aladdin and they didn't even mentioned Jasmine?.

That's great! So does Genie leave in the end of "The Magic Carpet's Secret"?

I think it's because they wanted to give the titles some diversity. Jasmine is featured prominently in the book.

I kinda agree.

To be honest, I didn't have such high hopes for Cindy3, due to the quality of crap that was Cindy2; however, it was just the tagline "What if . . .?" scenario that made me buy it and actually enjoy it. But is it the best? In my opinion, it's in a tie for second for DTV sequels/midquels/etc.

However, since I have yet to see TLM:AB for myself (yet . . . 2 more weeks . . .), I would have to say that "Simba's Pride" was one of the stronger sequels of the DTV line. Sure it doesn't bother to acknowledge the events of the "TLK: Six New Adventures" book series, but the quality of character and animation (as well as the great soundtrack) won me over. Another one is "Bambi II" (AKA Bambi and the Great Prince of the Forest) - the dialogue was a bit awkward during some parts, but the art and quality . . . WOW. It was breathtaking. One of Disney's better works.

So, yeah. I'll also admit to liking TLM2, only in the character of Melody alone (because she's just that interesting of a character) and not because of the storyline and baaaaad animation consistency. (The songs sucked too, but heck, as a devoted TLM fan, I will complete my collection darn it.)

But with the DTV sequels/midquels/continuations/etc., it's all up to the viewer. Sure, the Stitch movies were made to add closure (or more calamity - redundant plotlines . . . bah.) to the TV series (and the huge fandom that later spawned from it), and the Aladdin sequels (mainly the horribly-animated "Return to Jafar") added a prologue to the soon-to-begin TV series, but you like what you like.

But returning back to the topic at hand, I'm really looking forward to the final chapter of the DTV sequel saga. Based on what I've seen and heard of TLM:AB thus far, it seems to be good yet it's probably lacking originality to the plot.

(No, I choose not to read spoilers . . . because that's just how I roll. LOL)

And yeah, the commercial that I've seen for it seems to just scream "BUY ME" or something . . . I think I saw the flashback one that reminded you of the first movie before jumping into the basic plot of this prequel. (Heck, I'm still snagging mine on day one!)

It took long enough to get to it, but it was worth the wait.

Agreeing with the animation - Ariel looks really nice in it - and the dialogue really helps to show some personality to the sisters (although I still can't tell any of them apart other than Ariel, of course). It was cute, fun, and long (like three minutes, perhaps?).
