So many people look to set their hands on "Mermaid"

Post by rodis »

My aunt reads her 3-year-old daughter Disney's "The Little Mermaid" every night and after having searched far and wide for a copy of the VHS (no, they don't own a DVD set) she came to ask me if I happened to have a copy. Of-course I told her I had and agreed to give it to her to cop... (ah, is it even legal? )
Anyway, on the day I gave her the video, her sister happened to be there as well and was pretty shocked to see I had the movie. She told us how her daughter loves "The Little Mermaid II" and that she's been looking non-stop for the original film but with no luck.
Anyway, it was eventually me who went to take the video from the store with the 2 copies. The woman in the store handed me the original VHS first. She then looked at the sticker, laughed and said: "I've been looking for this video for my neice for months, I promised to buy it to her for her birthday but bought her "Shrek" instead". Poor girl

Anyway, this just goes to show you how eager people are to have a copy of "The Little Mermaid". The anticipation is huge and it's still 2 years away :(

P.S. I live in Israel and strangely E-Bay is not a common thing in here, and even so, there are no hebrew versions of the film available there.

I've had many people ask me why The Little Mermaid isn't available on dvd. So I agree, this is BY FAR the most requested Disney dvd title. Perhaps more than The Lion King was before it was released on dvd.

Yeah. If I had to choose just another Platinum, of course this would be it.

And it will be the most anticipated title since it's the last of the "modern classics".... the same would have happened if they've decided to leave, BATB, TLK or Aladdin for last.

Even tough we have to be greatful because it's going to be released "soon". Probably Disney thought that releasing the titles mentioned above so soon would mean that there would be no expected release. So they could have left TLM for the last title.

I really wouldn't want to be in Mermaid Kelly shoes. I know how much I suffered when I had to expect Aladdin, and then when the time came they pushed it a year later (altough it was for the best). So I can't imagine to wait for so long for this. :(

Or probably not, as none of those you mentioned had a DVD release in 1999. In fact, they had trouble selling them in 1999, which meant that you could get one of the Limited Issue releases free when you bought Snow White.

I think demand for TLM is much lower than what the demand for BATB, TLK or Aladdin would be if a release was swapped over.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

I do agree that the demand for BATB, TLK and Aladdin are much bigger but there was good reasons why it was sold so badly in 1999.

1. It was in 1999, most people had not gotten around to buy a DVD player yet.
2. The price, it was enormous.

Just look at all the pirated DVDs selling on Ebay, that should give an indication on to if it was demanded or not :)

As much as I can't wait for the DVD, im ok with waiting until next fall. I mean I'd much rather have it than any other title on the list, but the anticipation build-up is going to be great and I think it's a good marketing scheme on Disney's part. I mean look at what would happen if all in one month, they released TLM, Alad, BATB, TLK.....only the less popular titles would be left and the platinum line would be kind of spoiled cause no one would care as much. I think the most popular titles needed to be spread out. As long as The Little mermaid platinum doesnt make all the other platinums look bad i'll be very happy. I hope the DVD is MUCH more oriented to collectors than the little girls. I hate the DVD-games, and the children things. It's a waste of galleries, featurettes and insiders!
I am confident that Disney will work VERY hard on this dvd, and not get our hopes up for the next year

I think Bambi's performance will be very tale-tell for the Platinum pattern next year. I wouldn't be surprised if Mermaid got moved up to spring '06, but who knows. We'll probably have a good idea in half a year from now. I, too, am eagerly awaitin Mermaid's release far more than that of any other Platinum title.

Now I just have to wait one more year until TLM PE comes out... it's been a particular Disney favorite of mine. With the PEs of BATB and Aladdin now in my collection, I have only to wait for the final Ashman/Menken collaboration to be re-released on DVD.

I think Mermaid definately has more demand than Aladdin, perhaps even BATB, had at this point before their release. It just seems very popular at this point in time, and I'm sure most of the movie's fans don't own a copy of the LE DVD.

As for the release, I don't think it'll be moved to Spring '06. Since its one of Disney's most famous and popular titles, they'll no doubt want to cash in on holiday sales.

What's weird is that the Limited Issue was a low-profile release which reportedly sold not so many copies, and even more than that, was released 5 years ago, yet "The Little Mermaid" DVD is #90 on Amazon's DVD list, far higher than any of the PE (or any edition for that matter) releases. And it always maintains a high ranking, it's not just now.

Do you think that the fact that it already had a DVD release in the past (which I guess keeps selling in the present) would hurt its sales when the PE comes out? I surely hope not.

Little Mermaid

Yes it has been proven that the Little Mermaid is the most wanted dvd title. I am going to wait for the Platinum. I recently rented the Limited Issue DVD from the local Library, and I was not impressed.

I have the original movie on VHS, I do believe "Black Diamond" version?
I suppose you could keep searching the net or try and look everywhere around yer place.
It's hard to find VHS version of everything of Disney now (or atleast the classics, like Aladdin and Mermaid).
I'm not sure what you could do.

I think I'll check with a friend of mine. =D
