When Republicans lose, you don't get this sort of doom and gloom. Disagree? Fine. The world isn't over, though. America isn't dead.
Way to go, Bush! (And the Republican party in general- we have a healthy majority in every branch of federal government.)
And yes, some states can split electoral votes or even give them to the losing candidate in their state, providing the situation falls under certain guidelines. It rarely happens, though, and I'm entirely sure what the restrictions in this case are. Nevertheless, it won't occur in this case. The election certainly isn't close enough. Oh, and the Colorado initiative did not pass.
Bush and Kerry's speeches were very good today. Edwards' was tasteless.

"America" isn't dead yet, Aaron. But it's not going to get any better by a long shot.
Thank the Almighty that we have morally upright people in the majority right now who'll protect us against the terrorists, the baby-killers and the faggots.
God Bless America.
I'm gonna go shoot myself now... >_<

Here's the answer to the electoral college question:
taken from http://www.archives.gov/federal_registe ... tions.html
taken from http://www.archives.gov/federal_registe ... tions.html
This week's question:
What is the difference between Colorado's proposal to proportionally allocate electoral votes and the current way that Nebraska and Maine proportionally allocate electoral votes?
Answer:
Both Maine and Nebraska allocate their electors by a district system. For example, Maine has four electoral votes. Two electors are selected on the basis of the statewide vote and two are selected according to outcome of the vote in each of Maine's two Congressional districts. Nebraska's five electoral votes are distributed in the same manner: two based on the statewide vote, and three based on the results in Congressional districts.
Since these States have adopted a proportional system of allocating electoral votes, all the States' electoral votes have gone to only one of the Presidential candidates.
If passed, Colorado's initiative would proportionally allocate electoral votes based on the percentage of votes that each presidential candidate receives. For example, if candidate A gets 55% of the vote and candidate B gets 45%, then candidate A gets 5 electoral votes and candidate B gets 4 electoral votes. If candidate A gets 67%, then candidate A gets 6 electoral votes and candidate B gets 3 electoral votes.

Now we are in total agreement. After all the good paying jobs that were given away to China and India, the low paying ones being taken by the illegal immigrants we are all going to need another tax cut because soon we'll all be making minimum wage. That $300 sure did help for a week, I can tell you that. Besides, we need more tax cuts... who wants to bother trying to pay of the 6 Trillion dollar deficit? Let's spend more!Just Myself wrote:Well Bush, I hope your happy.
People have voted for you so in the next four years you can screw over the economy, create WWIII, lose another 3 million jobs, make taxes go through the roof and cause the price of gas to go up to $4.
I suspect he will be forced to resign a la Nixon by 2006.
Then maybe Bushy will attack more weaponless countries and kill thousands more civilians. Then maybe he'll start up the draft and this time women will be drafted as well while getting rid of abortion. Yep, send the mothers out to die...BUT SAVE THOSE BABIES!
But its okay because he says 'God' a whole lot when he speaks, so he must be religious. Yep, I hear a lot of ex-drug addicts are religious.
I don't know...it seems like we are really on our way to a civil war in this country yet again because it is really divided at this point. Bush has made some major mistakes, if he can resolve these problems, great. I will respect him a bit more...he's got 4 more years to try to turn things around and I really hope he does.

well people can be insanely stupid.
back in the day, nixon got re-elected by a landslide, and it was obvious he was a lying bastard.
jimmy carter got shut down every time by the republican congress and senate, something that would have likely happened to kerry as well.
wartime presedents historically usually get re-elected.
europe is giving the u.s. the gasface no matter what... they dislike bush and they sure as hell werent going to donate to this mess of a war either, despite what kerry wanted.
dick cheney eats souls of little children for breakfast.
voting on one issue instead of the whole picture will never work.
these people arent handed to us from god, they are elected officials who if they dont perform their job, should be fired.
the dopest states repped..... ny, pa, ri, ct, ca.....
it's extremely disheartening after all the hype - this was america’s chance to really speak up, a chance to prove they weren’t down with how their leader has been representing them and a chance to acknowledge the mistake in having elected the current administration in the first place, to truly display the power of democracy. this election if any was the time for people to come together and make that statement. it would have been beautiful and it would have been powerful. the american people speaking to the rest of the world - but in the end, youth turnout was so dismal, they failed.
i am also really unhappy that the democratic party ran out on the american people again. instead of waiting until every last vote was counted as promised, they caved under media pressure. i understand it was lost, but i'm still dissapointed.
i guess now its time to turn the focus on why Kerry lost...
there are some serious problems within the democratic party that need to be address - notably how they can NOT win the south, how they are LOSING the rust belt, and how social conservatives will vote AGAINST their economic interests in favor of their "ethical" ones.
blaming third parties - Nader, the Media, whoever - is useless.
the neo-cons won because the majority of the americans liked their candidate more than the liberal one and thats a fact.
this should be the new focus for 2008.
In the meantime, I suggest you guys colonize your own little island.
you can call it...
"New America: Not To Be Confused with 'The Other' America"
or
"New America: Slightly less racist than Old America."
..or you can just move to Canada, we got plenty of room.

That country's probably going to experience a lot of emigrating U.S. citizens in the next couple years... LOL

Okay disagreements about political philosophy not withstanding this point couldn't be further from the truth. Such lines "A Vote for Kerry is a vote for terrorists" and "9 out of 10 terrorists prefer" Kerry are just the tip of the mountain that Republican would be just as upset if Kerry won. It was just too big of an election for one side not to feel that way. When Republicans lose, you don't get this sort of doom and gloom. Disagree? Fine. The world isn't over, though. America isn't dead.
Like I said, political ideals aside let's not carried away here.

That's scary no matter which side wins because when either side has too much power, it tends to have a hard impact. The country being as polarized and hostile as it is right now is a prime example of that. It doesn't matter if the power is with the Repubs or Dems, it's a scary thought.
Why is everyone being so hateful? Because your candidate did not win you act like this? Come on folks. Because I wanted to vote for Bush, I've been told to "get a brain," create a colony of us loony people... this is getting ridiculous. I never acted like this after I voted against Bill Clinton and he won.

These are catchy slogans designed to drive a point home. It's quite different than a sincere feeling of utter despair (or perhaps even worse, a feigned one). Had Kerry won, I would have felt the nation was at bigger risk of attack, but I would not claim America was going to Hell in a handbasket, or that all Americans are stupid, or that I was moving to Canada.Edge wrote:Okay disagreements about political philosophy not withstanding this point couldn't be further from the truth. No political ideals were put aside in your statement, and I'm not at all carried away.
I see it as having at least some impact, which stands in contrast to the unproductive gridlock that results in the intently-partisan (made worse by the Dems). It's not scary, checks and balances still prevail despite sizeable majorities.Edge wrote:Way to go, Bush! For those Americans who are so fed up with the direction of our country, here's the skinny on going to live in Canada:

Hey, defensive righties - I'll gladly eat my hat if we somehow do come out of this next term unscathed. It's all a matter of time. And I'm sorry, but I have a really bad feeling that the worst is just around the bend. Present arguing won't do any good because the real ramifications take time. So just wait. That's all I'm sayin'.

I would you like to elaborate on the statement in bold. How would we be more open to attack if Kerry had won?awallaceunc wrote: Had Kerry won, I would have felt the nation was at bigger risk of attack, but I would not claim America was going to Hell in a handbasket, or that all Americans are stupid, or that I was moving to Canada.

As a side note, my brother just got laid off. His company made security gates that prevent terrorists from car bombing buildings. He was laid off because, according to his employer, the government is cutting back on this sort of thing and aren't ordering anymore of these devices. So much for security, huh?

Had Kerry won, I would have felt the nation was at bigger risk of attack, but I would not claim America was going to Hell in a handbasket, or that all Americans are stupid, or that I was moving to Canada.
Yet there were plenty of people on your side of the political spectrum who were just as doom and gloom about the possibility of Kerry getting elected.
And the argument isn't specifics so much as a response to the belief that only Democrats get doom and gloom when the lose. I gurantee you that had Kerry won there would have been just as many of people on republican side taking that simple "at higher risk for an attack" and running wild with it. Heck we saw a ton of it before the election and many people who genuinly believe/agree with those "Catchy slogans".
Ah yes of course made worse by the Dems. See this is where every political conversation tumbles into an almost elementary school back and forth exchange. I'm going to avoid that and simply point you to the history books to see that the road you mention is VERY much a two way street. It's no more the Dem's fault than the Repubs and vice versa.I see it as having at least some impact, which stands in contrast to the unproductive gridlock that results in the intently-partisan (made worse by the Dems). It's not scary, checks and balances still prevail despite sizeable majorities.
You're right checks and balances do prevail.....sometimes. History has also proven that when EITHER side has too much control {which in this case is having both sides of congress} than the checks and balances are too far skewed.
Now it's no secret that I am on the oppsite side of the poltical spectrum for you, but fair is fair. Between the doom and gloom and the apparent gridlock you're presented a very one dimensional view of reality which comprises both the right and wrong of BOTH parties.

Lot more at stake than any recent election. But the problem seems to becomes that both politcal sides seems to forget the insults their own people are throwing out there. For every "get a brain" and "loony people" crack, their is a liberal as a four letter word and other taunts right back.catNC wrote:Why is everyone being so hateful? But unfortunaly both sides like to fling the insults but not take them. As for me, I don't really mind it that much. No one has gotten malicious or offensive here. But just like it is a Repub's right to post a song lyric and vote their way it is a Dem's right to voice their displeasure and their lack of faith in this adiministration.
People have doing it since Washington himself and they'll be doing it long after this election. Welcome to word of free speech. It's wonderful but it comes at a cost: When you speak you gotta prepared that someone is gonna speak back. When you express your views someone is going to express theirs. You're not always gonna like it, but that's the way it works.
I don't think either side has been exceptionally mean to each other on here, but I do think that people have to understand that if your confident and willing enough to "announce" your ideas you WILL get a reaction. If you don't want the reaction, than you can choose how and when you want to announce them.
Take Aaron and I for example. I've said some things about Reps, him about Dems. Each has their own intent and prejudices but I don't "hate" aaron or even get offended by him even if I very much disagree with him.
I've tried to avoid this conversation, since you're never going to change anyone's mind on these matters, but Republicans seem to be under-represented here. Also, I'm not trying to single you out by quoting you STASHONE, it's just that I take exception to some of your statements.STASHONE wrote:well people can be insanely stupid.

First, I don't see how you can say people can be incredibly stupid, when you said yourself earlier in this thread that you had talked to many people that you had talked to many idiots that have never voted, don't follow politics, and think smart people are nerds, and that they are voting for Kerry. To me that implies that Kerry appeals more to uninformed voters, and given the fact that the only age group he won was the 18-29 group, which, just in my opinion, are most likely to be uninformed, I believe it held true.
As for this being America's chance to speak up, they did speak up. It just happend to be in a different way than you would have liked.
I also do not think the Democrats ran out on anyone. There was absolutely no point in prolonging the process, and further dividing this country, when there is mathematically no chance that Kerry can win. I applaud Kerry for doing this, and I believe he had the best interests of everyone involved, Democrats and Republicans alike, when doing so.
As for "New America: Slightly less racist than Old America", I don't get this constant label that Democrats try to place on Republicans. In my opinion, Democrats tend to be more prejudiced than Republicans, since the Democrats are constantly talking to minorities in a condascending manner, trying to make them believe that it is impossible to succeed in this world without their help.
I do agree with awallaceunc that Republicans in general would not have been so incredibly angry had Kerry won. Sure, there would have been a great amount of disappointment, but there is a fundamental difference regarding Democrats and Republicans views of the importance of government in their personal lives. Generally, conservatives believe that the less the government intrudes on people's lives the better. Any presidential election is going to have a big effect on the country, but if you believe your general happiness and well-being are so dependent on who is in the White House that you say things like you're going to shoot yourself, move to jupiter, etc., then you'll probably never understand where the right is coming from.
I also agree that the amount of finger pointing and name calling coming from the left side of the fence does exceed the amount coming from the right, which I always find ironic, since the Democrats are always advertised by the media as being the "understanding" and "open-minded" party, yet anyone that disagrees with them on anything is immediately labeled a racist, fascist, homophobe, etc. If you don't like the results of the election, nominate a better candidate next time, and do a better job of convincing the American people that you actually have something to offer. Until then, accept the fact that your candidate lost by almost 4 million votes, and the American people chose to throw out a number of Democrats in Congress.
Anyway, just my 2 cents. Let the stone-throwing begin.
No face as hideous as my face was ever meant for Heaven's Light.
