By the way, I fully agree that a Bambi giftset would do better than a MUlan one. Plus they started this trend, now continue it!!!

Imagine getting sketches from the 9 old men!! That would be sweet!!
Plus it would look better on the shelf to have a complete lineup

How does Disney pick which movies will get a gift set? Just wondering. Don't worry Luke. I don't think King can get Disney to shut you down just because he's "pissed" at you. Disney wouldn't waste their breath.
Dragon, not lizard. I don't do that tongue thing.

I'm pretty sure Luke didn't even consider that dufus.

I don't think Disney would just choose random titles for the giftset, either they continue it or not, they better continue it.

I have a question about giftsets:

what is the point of the sencond half of the companion book??Its clearly a bedtime story for the 5 year olds. The box says "COLLECTOR'S" Such a beautiful looking book should be likewise inside.

Luke you tell him. I agree with you completely. If you are going to be on this forum, you should be meaningful, and not just post to get your little post rank up. That poor kid has problems.

My prediction is that we will see gift sets for the October Platinum releases. Cinderella and The Little Mermaid definitely seem like the type to get a special box and book. I guess we'll all have to wait and see.

So you don't think Bambi will?? As Luke sayd, it will have a broader target.

I think it is a matter of spacing out their time and resources. If Bambi was going to get a gift set, I think we would know it by now. However, I do not know when the information was available for the other two gift sets, so I do not know for sure. Would I like to see Bambi get a gift set? Of course!

Exactly my problem with the companion books. Would I really be buying the gift set if I didn't already know the story? And while the books are in fact beautiful, there's just a lot of wasted space. Either they make it an all-out art book (which would be a nice idea), or they actually chronicle the making of the DVD.

I also think the gift sets are way overpriced. The sketches and other extras are nice enough, but there's no doubt in my mind they probably cost pennies to produce. Of course, they're not forcing me to buy them, but they're really taking advantage of my obsessive-compulsive collecting ;)

The one thing I really like about the gift sets so far is that they've been relatively uniform in design. They sure look purdy lined up on the shelf.

The thing that really scares me is the rumor that Disney's planning true "archival" versions of their films aimed solely at collectors. I salivate at the thought, but my wallet begs to differ.

The thing about gift sets for the older movies is that so far all the gift sets have had sketched done by the original artists and signed by them... Aren't most of these people dead now? If so, how could they sketch their characters and sign them. Even if there were already signed sketched somewhere in the vault, I would think it would be illegal for disney to sell them...

Then again, I might just not know what I'm talking about.

I am howevber seeing people still complaining about the contents of the present giftsets, and noone has yet to adress what I said before, and that's "are you willing to shell out the money for every single gift set you all are proposing?" saying that there should be a Bambi gift set, but then when it's released just saying, "oh that's nice, I don't think I'll pick it up because the sketches are pointless, nice but not as nice as the lithographs you can get from preordering, and the book is just a rehashing of what's already on the dvd...", is pointless. Why? because Disney has then invested time and money putting this gift set together, and we all know that the first time a single gift set doesn't sell well enough to make quota that the idea will be abandoned...

Besides just having giftset for a few select titles, makes them all the more special, atleast I think so.

I really wouldn't mind if we only got one more gift set, as long as it was The Little Mermaid, but hey, if Disney does decide to release more and they sell well, then more power to them, and congrats to all you who will actually buy and appreciate them! :)

By the way, now that Prince Phillip brings the topic. Does someone knows how many copies of these Gift Sets have been sold? Don't know about The Lion King but I do think the Aladdin one has sold plenty of them.

it does seem in hindsight that they added the extra materials in.
Im sure that Bambi will get one, because it comes in the wake of aladdins awesome realease.
I mean, aside from a few quibbles, aladdin has set the mark for what a SE should be.

it works from both perspectives- they might say, "bambi is such a classic we will put it in a gift set" or "bambi might not sell as well as a newer release, lets make a gift set to really set it off"

Im hoping it comes out cos the presentation is so much nicer than the tacky covers we get with a standard issue 8)

Personally, I agree with Luke, I can't see a Mulan gift set selling as well as a Bambi or Cinderella gift set. I just don't think that Mulan is in the 'classic' collection of Disney movies, it's age being one of the factors. I don't think Disney should bring out a gift set for every film but I think classics like Bambi, Cinderella and the Little Mermaid should definitely get a gift set because as movies they're just a little bit special.

But I'm pretty sure Disney have a finger on the pulse of the market and will only bring out gift sets for those ones that they know will fly off the shelves much as TLK and Aladdin did. Do you think they lurk on UD to see what the diehard fans that frequent this wonderful website want???

SNOW WHITE GIFTSET if you guys are lurking! And Bambi, Cinderella and The Little Mermaid.......
