When (and why) did they start issuing Gift Sets?

Post by Celtic »

The first gift set I got was the Lion King one and I've just gone and ordered the Aladdin one (which has just been shipped....yay)!. Was the Lion King the first gift set or have I missed any before that? By gift set I mean the ones that come with the sketches, film frame and book.

The Lion King was first, but I don't know if we can expect a Gift Set with each Platinum, since there does not appear to be a Bambi gift set planned.

More on this here: http://www.ultimatedisney.com/releasetypes.htm

The only ones that got gift sets are The Lion King and Aladdin. There might be a Bambi giftset in the works, you never know. The DVD isn't coming out until 2005.

Why did the giftsets start with TLK?? Will we see any more??

Post by Ciaobelli »

Anyone have a clue why Snow White and BATB didn't get a gift set? I would have loved one for those two. :(

Also there has been no word on the Bambi gift set, do you think we will get one?

Can Disney keep up with what hey start???

I think its still a possibilty that Bambi could get a gfit set. And I dont think it was that BATB and Snow White were not worthy of getting a gift set, rather Disney had not thought of the idea yet. Just as BATB came in a different case than Snow White and included a slipcover, as Disney releases each platinum they think of new ideas they could add or change with the next one. Personally I believe these two would make a fantastic gift set. Crossing my fingers for Bambi!

I think they probably came up with the idea afterwards, try to improve on the original platinum concept.

I don't think every platinum should get a gift set, I do think that Mualn should have though, I'm dissappionted that that rumour turned out to be false.

I think you have to consider the movie when deciding whether or not it should get a gift set.

A movie like Bambi isn't a collector type movie. Die hard Disney fans may feel the need to pick it up because it's a Walt Disney Classic, one of the original 5 animated features, but will random dvd buffs, want to shell out the extra cash to buy it? Hell, there were people on this board both last year and this year that were "diehard The Lion King fans and diehard Aladdin fans" and yet either did not ind up buying the gift set or were iffy about it, and there are still people complaining about the contents, I mean damn! Can't some people just be happy we're getting all this extra stuff!?

Anyway, my point is that Aladdin and The Lion King, were collector type movies, and more importantly were films that appeal to men (who do make up the majority of DVD collectors).

A movie like Mulan, I think would have the same kind of appeal.

Disney has to take into consideration which movies will sell more gift sets, as I'm sure the Gift sets cost a bit of money to make. I don't for see Bambie selling that many gift sets, or Cinderella, really, for that matter, but I do see people buying a Collector's Gift set of The Little Mermaid, which seems to be Disney's most anticipated DVD release...

There are a lot of people who are not "into" Disney persay, but they do like The Lion King and Aladdin and The Little Mermaid, and perhaps a few other scattered titles from the 90's and I thin those are the ones that will sell the most giftsets, and therefore the ones that are most deserving and SHOULD get them...

but that's just my opinion, I'm sure there are plenty who will disagree.

but please don't suggest that all these titles should get giftset treatment unless you could see yyour self shelling out $50 for each and everyone, without complaint...

My wish is that all the platinums get Giftsets, and that the book inside is worthwile. I started reading the Aladdin one and its like reading the back of a DVD case. "in your hands is a masterpiece DVD"(something like that) you don't need to tell me over and over how cool the friggin thing is, I already know, hats why I just sheled out $40 for it.

I just wish the book was as good as the Box.

Inane fragments like these don't say anything and aren't worth posting. If you're going to post, make sure you have something to contribute. If you don't have anything to contribute other than broken phrases designed to pad your post count, don't bother posting.

Thanks.

Consider this your second warning, Kingruler202. If the inane posts don't stop in favor of something that resembles insight, you can join the ranks of Basil of Baker Street.

Dumbing down the forum in the name of upping your post count is not welcomed here, and even if it looks like I'm being harsh, there are many who post here and who have slowed posting here who feel the same way.

well i have 50 now so i don't have much reason to post as much but it's not that it might seem harsh, it is harsh. saying i'm dumbing the post isn't nice. i'm giving my opinion and theirs nothing wrong with that. and it wasn't nice of you either to get rid of my avatar for post reasons. thats why i did it otherwise i would have just left the board at that. i don't come often and when i do i won't it to be a place where i can say opinions (despite size).

Again, Prince Phillip, I think you're taking leaps in logic based on your own personal feelings.

I would say that there are a lot more potential Gift Set buyers for Bambi than there are Mulan. I would also venture to say that many more men are behind Bambi than Mulan. Disregarding thematic material (which in any event, I don't think favors a male fanbase for Mulan), Bambi is a film that three generations of children have grown up with. Mulan was in theaters six years ago. The children that may have seen Bambi in its various theatrical runs, or grown up with the video cassettes, now have children and grandchildren, and some even have great-grandchildren. These people have the desire to own the film on DVD, and the means to easily afford a Gift Set. With Mulan, the only people with fond childhood memories of liking the film are in high school, not exactly a group known to have lots of money to spend on pricey gift sets.

That's kind of a side issue, since I have no doubt that any Disney Gift Set would prove profitable. I think the issue here is "how profitable." And I think Bambi would certainly reach more of a Collector's market than Mulan.

Your logic is highly flawed. Thinking you have to post to reach 50 doesn't do you any good. You're not giving your opinion; you're hitting your keyboard enough times to form a few words. By doing it, you're dumbing down the entire forum.

Changing the forum to allow only regular posters to have avatars wasn't a personal offense against you. But since you seem so set on merely wasting everyone's time so you can have an avatar next to your name, your avatar privileges are being revoked until you understand the point of the forum, and the point of contributing to the forum.

It's not about reaching 50 posts and getting an avatar.
