I thought that Magnifico was a real name in Spain. I also thought the name was ridiculous.
Oh, sorry. No, what I meant is that it was weird to me that he had a name that sounded Spanish and wasn't voiced by someone of that descent. Magnífico means magnificent in Spanish, so it's an adjective, not a person's name. At least, I don't know anyone called that. I've heard it as a nickname, though. I think a Disney or Pixar artist, whose name I've seen in movie credits, has it as a nickname.

If I'm not mistaken, it would be the first time a female Disney protagonist only has a mother. Well, Tiana is the closest example of that, but both of her parents are alive at the beginning of the movie.
Yeah, only Tiana's mother isn't well-defined and she plays less of a role than Tiana's father does as far as story importance. I hope the mother is more important here for the female protagonist for once.
Yeah, that's interesting. Jennifer Lee said the character needed to be charming and charismatic, so maybe they wanted him to look like "a wolf in sheep's clothing". I wonder if he's a magician or something since he's described as "the sole keeper of hundreds of wishes" and that's why they made him king. Since they said Asha is a leader in the making who doesn't know she is yet, I suspect she'll dethrone him by the end of the movie and become the new ruler. Or, who knows, maybe she'll turn the kingdom into a democracy.
Something about that "sole keeper of hundreds of wishes" makes me think of King Candy and the way he sort of re-writes history of Vanellope being the princess, as if he's the keeper of her life in her place or something. Maybe there's something to that, and it may be how Asha becomes queen as I suspect based on her design similarities / callbacks to the Queen from Snow White.

I don't love the name, but I sort of don't hate it? Depends how it's pronounced. Magnefique!--O was my initial reading, lol, which like I said, not great, but not horrible for me personally. But I'd like if it's more Mag NEH fee co (spoken really fast, more emphasis on the neh part and not on the fee part, magNEHfeeco). Just from the similarities, I could already tell its meaning was magnificent. Another callback, I guess--Maleficent is also a hybrid of magnificent with "mal" for bad / evil. EDIT: Nevermind, I realized I read it wrong, it's got two i's not an e and an i.

That would be nice for a change.

I was thinking that it reminded me of another Disney villain, but I couldn't remember who. Yes, that makes him sound a bit like King Candy.

In Spanish the stressed syllable of the word is "ní": magfico.

The video description of the teaser confirms the Kingdom of Rosas is located off the Iberian Peninsula and reveals more info about King Magnifico, which I marked in bold below. It also seems the title of Asha's song has changed from "More For Us" to "This Wish".
Check out the new trailer, plus a poster and new image for Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish,” which opens exclusively in theaters on Nov. 22. The trailer introduces 17-year-old Asha, the powerful King Magnifico, Asha’s pet goat Valentino, and Star, a celestial ball of boundless energy that Asha’s wish calls down from the sky. It also features a snippet of the song “This Wish,” performed by Ariana DeBose; it’s one of several new songs written by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice for the film.

The all-new musical-comedy welcomes audiences to Rosas, a fantastical land located off the Iberian Peninsula. “Our heroine, Asha, lives in Rosas, known as the kingdom of wishes,” said director Chris Buck, who helms the film with Fawn Veerasunthorn. “People come from everywhere to give their wishes to a magical king who promises to grant their deepest desires—someday. Only he can decide which wishes will come true and when.”

Added Veerasunthorn, “We have been inspired by so many iconic films over Disney Animation’s 100 years, especially stories where we explore the power of someone with a wish, combined with the conviction to make that wish come true. Being able to honor that legacy with this incredible story and these amazing characters has been a joy for our entire team.”

Three new official stills have also been released:
Image
THIS WISH – Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish” introduces Asha, a sharp-witted idealist who makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force—a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star set out to prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.

BEST WISHES – Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish” is set in Rosas, a magical kingdom where wishes really do come true. The film introduces Asha, a sharp-witted idealist who’s invited to see first-hand where King Magnifico keeps the wishes of those who’ve entrusted him with their deepest desires.

Well, after seeing the teaser, I must say that I thought it was mostly meh. The settings looks very generic and looks like it`s stepped right out of Puss in Boots franchise. While the style looks mostly CGI, the hand drawn parts of doesn`t look fluidly enough and awkward. Especially the Star, who truly doesn`t mesh with the rest of the style. Valentino`s talking also felt out of place and ruined the flow of the teaser.
It`s remarkable how the tagline is "from the studio that brought you The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella (since most of the Revival trailers have promoted the Revival hits and especially Frozen). However, the things I liked was the song, the part of the little kid running at the beginning, the parts of Asha in the woods and the presentation of the logo. All in all, a underwhelming teaser. I`ll hope that we`ll get a better trailer in the future.

I gotta say, despite people’s different opinions and feelings on the animation style, which I still think are as fluid as Paperman, I think this looks exciting and gorgeous and marks a return to form for Disney, especially with the return to a traditional Disney villain, which is why they got Chris Pine in that role.

I hope Disney markets this hard with the next trailer in July with Haunted Mansion, a special look at the film #Disney100 days out, and the final trailer in September/October/November before Paw Patrol 2 and The Marvels.

I think this could be Disney’s next Frozen-level hit, ironic considering it’s coming out on the 10th Anniversary of Frozen and is done by the team who did Frozen, and I hope it is so that Jennifer Lee can keep fighting to get Disney back to hand-drawn animation in Tiana and other future stories for us, especially since Eric Goldberg at D23 teased Disney working on an animated feature film with “A LOT” of hand-drawn animation.

Hm ... I don't know if the animation style was quite ready for feature-length filmmaking, but there's a lot that I like. Asha has a really unique sounding voice for a Disney heroine.

I like the ~feel~ of the teaser, it definitely reminds me of old school Disney. Very magical. Asha is beautiful. What sounds like a generic introductory narration and then turns into a threat is very well done. Chris Pine is doing a great job.

That said, I'm not sure I like the animation style. It feels very crude and restrictive and... kind of primitive, I'd dare say. Not very fluid at all. It reminds me of older Barbie movies (2001-2006) for some reason. Anyway, it's just a teaser and the final movie may look and feel different, and given this is a new style for Disney it will take some time to get used to it. I'm willing to be open-minded, but I also question the logic of striving to make CG appear hand-drawn, when you could have just made a hand-drawn movie to begin with

Also, I don't like the goat's voice or him wearing a jumpsuit :D

The animation looks much like it did in the fantasy cutscenes from Raya and the Last Dragon, albeit more colorful. It's definitely a statement.

Did anyone catch the small scene of what looks like people Flynn Rider-ing it up in the place where the wish bubbles are stored? I wonder if the wishes are a source of energy that people try to steal?

I thought the teaser looked promising and the film could be their best film in the last five years. I definitely need to get used to this animation, seems like it's mostly cel shading like Far From the Tree, and it definitely didn't look anything like the classics in my opinion.

I didn't care for the goat as well. It's a shame they didn't think about giving this role to a child and making him more like Flounder, it's kind of awkward that an adult man's voice is coming out of him. I can already tell that he's going to be annoying.

I think the teaser definitely made me more interested in Wish, but that “3D/2D” style really isn't my favorite. Since hand-drawn animation can’t have any motion blur, this toon-shaded weirdness is forced to have none as well, which makes it look like some kind of cheap viewport previsualization. Plus, since it has to look “hand-drawn” all surfaces look stripped from detail (also like a viewport previsualization). And it doesn’t even feel/look like hand-drawn because the animation stays at a constant 24 fps.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they used that style to cover the fact that they didn’t have enough time to make the movie. I mean, they started the movie in January of 2022, it’s been just a little over a year. That is definitely not enough time to make a full-quality movie, and I bet animators and pretty much everyone at WDAS are getting squished by deadlines right now (they’ve only been animating for 4 months!!). This movie seems very last-minute. But it’s the story that counts… right?

Edit: I also think the song sounded better in the teaser than it did at the presentation back in September. But that also raises the question: is this the “big” song? If I was smart, I wouldn’t put the main song in the teaser trailer, but then again, who knew that We Don’t Talk About Bruno would become a giant hit? It wasn’t exactly the “main song”.

It looks so nice! I saw a lot of callbacks just in this. One part reminded me of Esmeralda looking up at the stained glass in "God Help the Outcasts," the part with the bubbles (dreams?) reminded me of "I See the Light." Only thing I didn't like was the goat's voice. Maybe it'll grow on me.
