I agree, I think he looks better here than in all the previous images.

This is the last feature to have been greenlit before Pete Docter took over Pixar’s creative reins, so wait for the studio’s 2023 slate and beyond for a sense of his vision.

Curious that the last movie Lasseter would greenlit at Pixar was about a character from the first movie he was involved in. It will be almost six years since he left till we see the first feature greenlit by Docter.

Although if Lasseter was still at Pixar, would Dan Scanlon, Enrico Casarosa and Domee Shi have been replaced on their movies? Because I have noticed since Docter has taken charge, he has let every directors finish the movie they started as opposed to what happened to the likes of Jan Pinkava, Bob Peterson and Brenda Chapman.

So far Docter seems to make the right decisions. He and Lasseter (even without the scandal) are two different types of people.

I wonder what was the last WDAS film personally greenlit by Lasseter. Will Strange World be the last?

Unlike Pixar, there still was some director shuffling done at WDAS following Lasseter's departure. Dean Wellins was booted for the umpteenth time. Not sure how he hasn't yet set the place on fire.

Haven't been able to find any information about Strange World in that regard, but an article says this about Encanto:

Lin Manuel Miranda was approached in 2016 by John Lasseter, the then-chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios,with an idea for Encanto

Strange World has premiere about a year after Encanto, so it could have been greenlit in late 2017 when he was still there. More info will probably come out as the move is getting closer to finished.

Yes, I believe he still is, though I wouldn't be surprised if he leaves. How many times can you bear losing the director's chair? I'm not a WDAS insider and obviously have never met Mr Wellins, but I would imagine he feels very, very frustrated - and that's understandable. We're all human.

MacLane and his team are looking at Lightyear as a prequel story to later Buzz films that the toy could conceivably have been based on.

Are they just saying that to justify potential sequels? We went from this being the film the toy line was based on to it being the first in a series of films and the toy line being based on the subsequent entries.

I read that line several times because I didn't get what they meant by that. Who knows, maybe you're right that's why they said it. By the way, looking at the new still again, I've realized Buzz looks a lot like Chris Evans there, don't you think?

Yeah, now that you mention it, I see it too. I suppose that's to be expected in animation. Character design and expressions are often influenced by the actor who's voicing them.

That's true; it happens quite often in animation. I guess it catches my attention more this time because the character already existed and didn't look like Chris Evans in the past.

Buzz's head looks especially big and disproportionate in that poster. Based on the new trailer, the movie looks quite boring. I'm actually surprised by how uninspired and dull it seems to be. The visuals are cold, sterile and dreary. The robo-cat is more creepy than funny. The only bright spot was the big robot chasing after them looking like Emperor Zurg, but that's just superficial nostalgia bait. I think this is going to be a pass for me.

More members of the voice cast have also been announced and Giacchino has been confirmed as composer:

Joining the previously announced Chris Evans, who lends his voice to Buzz, are Keke Palmer, Dale Soules and Taika Waititi as a group of ambitious recruits. Peter Sohn voices Buzz’s robot companion, Sox, and the cast also includes the voices of Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez and Isiah Whitlock Jr.

Also revealed this morning, composer Michael Giacchino, who’s behind the scores for the upcoming film The Batman, as well as Spider-Man: No Way Home, is on board to score Lightyear. Giacchino has a long history with Pixar, as he won an Oscar®, Golden Globe® and Grammy® for the original score in Up. His other Pixar credits include The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Cars 2, Inside Out, Coco and Incredibles 2, among others. The Lightyear Original Motion Picture Soundtrack from Walt Disney Records will be available on June 17, 2022.

I feel like this would be more appealing if it were live action for some reason. It’s bit jarring because we know the animated buzz. This is just a slightly more gritty animated buzz… which is just off.

But I’m open to being surprised. I hope it’s good.

Just curious how realistic one could make Buzz without entering the so-called uncanny valley. Maybe someone at Deviantart or somewhere will give it a try.

I like a great science fiction story, even if not much is known about the plot yet based on the trailer. Just hope it will not lead to a large conflict that is then solved with dialogue.

I think so too. Maybe it's because it's a straight sci-fi film and we're not used to that in animation. Maybe it's the uncanny valley factor of having a more realistically-designed animated version of an already-established animated character. Or maybe it's because the concept for this film feels more like a gimmick and that's something we expect from Disney's live-action department.
