Re: Miscellaneous Film/TV Discussion
If only I had friends who wanted to go to Barnes & Noble with me!
Wait, so Joan Fontaine won Best Actress but you said it was his only Oscar win...
I haven't seen Vertigo either. I saw Arrival and I did like Amy in that.
I'll watch Rear Window sometime! Maybe tonight or this weekend! Glad to hear about Grace Kelly!
Yeah The Birds has scary birds and suspense but that's it. I also find Psycho boring. I was struck by it when I saw it as a kid. Now I'm older and so bored by it.

Re: Miscellaneous Film/TV Discussion
The sale is online also which is how I purchased from them. Pretty much most of the Criterion Collection isn't available at my local Barnes and Noble so I didn't have a choice anyway. As long as you order more than $35 (which isn't an issue if you're purchasing two films), you get free shipping.
Yes, Hitchcock's films have only ever received an Oscar win through Joan Fonatine's Best Actress award for Hitchcock's Suspicion. So you're right that he really didn't get the Oscar but it's the only Oscar recognition any of his films ever received.
I'm glad to hear you liked Arrival too.
Have you seen Grace Kelly in other films before? This was my first time and I admittedly enough could see why so many people compare her to Cinderella.
I haven't seen Psycho in a while so I don't remember if I thought it was boring or not.

I will just buy what I want when I really want it. I don't do sales, I do my whims lol.
But Hitchcock's Rebecca won Best Picture and Best Cinematography!
I only liked Amy Adams in arrival. I actually didn't like the movie.
I have yet to see Grace Kelly in a film.
Oh, ok, about Psycho.

Re: Miscellaneous Film/TV Discussion
@Duster- I've only seen a few of Be Kind Rewind's videos, but her stuff is simultaneously well-researched and fun to watch. I watched her Bette and Joan video, which was again a great balance of incredibly detailed and entertaining. I had known some of the superlative information before, but hadn't seen everything detailed together like she did here, which made for a good watch to see how overblown their feud was. I also enjoyed watching her take on Feud, since I always like seeing someone knock Ryan Murphy down a peg lol. Although I'll be fair and admit that I hadn't seen the miniseries, and I generally like his work better when he tones things down like in American Crime Story.
I need to watch more of her videos! Her attempt to analyze every Best Actress campaign is an admirable one, and all the ones I've seen have been a hoot.
@JeanGreyForever- Thanks for reminding us about the Criterion sale! Well, I did find out yesterday, and just bought the Showa era Godzilla set today, but it's good to remind people about it.
I'm really loving my set. It's big, shaped more like a coffee table book than a Blu-Ray set, which is fine by me. The use of pop art for Godzilla on the cover is a good fit, and I cannot wait to open it and check out the book and art inside.

This is the cover!
As for The Birds isn't an all-time favorite. I do enjoy it a lot for its ability to build tension without music, and for some strong camera work. It's fun to watch, but he's made more competent films for sure, although not after this one IMO. It is notable for having special effects made by Ub Iwerks, which earned him an Oscar nomination. Although to be fair, some of the green screen effects do not hold up.
And while I do like Amy Adams, I didn't care for Arrival, but I thought she was good in that. I much preferred The Master when it came out, but I don't recall her being the high-point. Philip Seymour Hoffman was best in show from what I recall. I definitely don't think that it's a movie for everyone, but it's still among my favorite Paul Thomas Anderson films.

I love Be Kind Rewind! I’ve seen all her video essays and I look forward anytime she posts a new one. They’re great because they have such a love and respect for the actresses covered. I learn new things all the time from her channel!
Criterion Sale
I’m sitting out on the sale this summer. :/ it’s okay, though, I’ll be back. Maybe for the November sale.
I love that Godzilla set, Aviator! I hope you enjoy it! I keep thinking about buying it one day just because it looks so awesome.
Looking
I thought I was going to get out of it, but my friend guilted me into finishing “Looking.” And honestly, I’m glad I did because I ended up liking it enough that I wish there was more of the series. As the supporting characters develop over the two seasons and the movie, you come to really care for them and like them and you’re happy at the end when everyone ends up in a good place.
My big caveat is Jonathon Groff who is the protagonist of the series and honestly always kind of awful (which is amazing because I love Groff). Still, by series end I cared and liked him well enough that I was happy he ended up with Richie and not the British guy BUT IF HE HAD NOT BEEN SO STUPID ALL ALONG HE WOULD HAVD REALIZED RICHIE WAS ALWAYS THE GUY FOR HIM.

You're right, I re-read the Wiki article and I misinterpreted what it said. Actually what it said was that Joan Fontaine was the only Oscar-winning performance from a Hitchcock film. So no actor ever got an Oscar from starring in a Hitchcock film besides Joan Fontaine in Suspicion. Otherwise, Hitchcock himself has won Oscars like you said. Thank you for correcting me and pointing out the error because that was a big one!!
I heard a lot of hype for the film but I wasn't disappointed. It was quite different from what I thought it would be but a good different.
I was never into Grace Kelly but I'm more open to watching more films with her now.

Is Be Kind Rewind a YouTube channel? She seems to have some interesting videos based on how you guys have described her. I liked American Crime Story a lot as well. Very different from Ryan Murphy's usual staple of shows.Avaitor wrote:@Duster- I've only seen a few of Be Kind Rewind's videos, but her stuff is simultaneously well-researched and fun to watch. Wow, that is an amazing cover and I particularly like the size of it. glad you could purchase it! How many films are included?
The film is pretty eerie enough without music. While some of the birds effects haven't aged well, ironically enough, it's the green screen background whenever a character is driving or sailing that looks the most dated.
I looked up The Master and it doesn't look like the type of film I'd like very much but if so many people here are recommending it, I should probably give it a shot. From the Wiki description, it doesn't seem like Amy Adams' role is very big or impressive though.

Re: Miscellaneous Film/TV Discussion
Recently re-watched Jackie Brown, which I first saw 10 years ago, and thought was only okay at the time. I used to be a hater of Quentin Tarantino, but the last few years I’ve been reevaluating my feelings on his art. Still not a fan of all his characters being vengeance driven, nor that he writes a lot of N-Word spouting White Men, but I respect his creative attention to detail in paying homage to 1960s-70s cinema. One major thing I do like is that he does make cool films representing awesome Black characters and women as protagonists like in Django Unchained and Kill Bill. Jackie Brown is where that started (Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction doesn't count since he isn’t the main character, and John Travolta has much more screen time). This is the most chill movie that Tarantino has done to date. And yes, I am curious to read the book it’s based on someday.

Avaitor, yes, agreed on Be Kind Rewind!
Yes that Godzilla cover is awesome!!! And it's Godzilla so of course it's gotta be huge!!!
JeanGreyForever, ha, well, with my depression I don't get into as much stuff I guess, which is a good thing! I am a very choosy collector! I'm actually glad though that you can enjoy so much stuff!
It's ok about that Oscar mistake. Now you know! Hm, wow, the only Oscar win for a performance in a Hitchcock!
I can hardly remember what happened in Arrival lol.
I started knowing about and liking Grace Kelly when someone said Disney based Cinderella on her. Of course that's not true, but then I found out some of her life story and I like her for that.
Yes, Be Kind Rewind is a Youtube Channel.
The Master...is not a movie I like either.
DVDBuff1 I am a big Quentin Tarantino fan!

Re: Miscellaneous Film/TV Discussion
Well most of the stuff I purchase is related to either Disney, Star Wars, Harry Potter, or Marvel. And I guess 3/4 of those properties are Disney anyway although with Marvel, I really only buy reprints of the old comics that I like so they aren't really from the Disney era. Disney is pretty expensive and because I have several favorite films and not just 1-2, that makes it harder to balance out.
Yes, it does seem surprising.
I watched it recently so it's still fresh on my mind but maybe in a few years or so, I won't remember much of it either.
Even though Disney didn't base Cinderella on her, it's true that Grace Kelly and Cinderella have a lot of similarities. It's even more uncanny considering Grace Kelly's Cinderella moment happened after the film's release so if anything, she was copying the film lol.
Thank you for confirming about Be Kind Rewind.
Lol, the description of The Master seemed very weird and not to my liking.

Oh, yeah those are all cool things to get. Glad you can enjoy those. Wow, reprints of old comics is cool!
Yes, maybe that will happen in a few years, it depends on how much you liked the movie.
I know, that's such a cool fact about Grace Kelly!
Yeah you probably won't like The Master.

I just watched Hitchcock's Marnie. I know it's not one of his more famous films (I had never heard of it before now) but I quite enjoyed it myself. And I've never seen a film with a young Sean Connery before so that was also a plus.

Re: Miscellaneous Film/TV Discussion
Just wanted to say that a lot of Criterion titles are available for a cheaper price on Amazon right now because of the Barnes & Noble sale. They're all about $22.99 right now!
Also Parasite is being added to the collection as of this October. I saw the film on Hulu and loved it enough that I'd be glad to purchase it!
Have you seen any films lately Duster?

Re: Miscellaneous Film/TV Discussion
I saw Rear Window and wow was that good! The script and direction really saved it from being boring from seeing the same plot imitated so many times. I loved the look into other people's lives besides the suspect's. My favorite character was Grace Kelly's by far. I also loved the nurse and Ms. Lonelyhearts. Really good movie!
I'm gonna watch Winnie the Pooh tonight!
EDIT: I watched Winnie the Pooh! It was actually really good! It was very funny, and actually very charming. It was actually very much like the original! In fact, the only reason it is ineferior to the original is it doesn't have that sad goodbye speech Christopher Robin makes at the end of the original, but I actually like this movie better! Yup, blasphemy right? The songs were ok, but I really liked the one not written by the Lopezes, "So Long". Clever lyrics and fun tune in that one. Also, I was like, "Is that Zoey Deschanel singing those songs?" And she was! Piglet changing the teapot for the pine cone was really funny, and Pooh and Piglet getting honey was freaking hilarious! “As long as you don’t make any sudden movements.” “Aaah!”
Rabbit was my favorite character, which is hard because I have not liked Rabbit very much in other things!

I'm glad you liked it! ^ I feel very similarly to you! I think the movie is super funny, and "So Long" is my fave, and I like it better than the original (it's funny!)! Did you like the 'knot' scene?! I love it.

I'm glad you enjoyed Winnie the Pooh as well. Personally I don't think it's as charming as the original. The characters feel a bit modernized in personality and a little too mean-spirited for my taste (the way Piglet is always getting picked on in this film). The songs did not particularly grasp my attention either unlike the Sherman Brothers' classic ones. Rabbit is voiced by Spongebob's voice actor in this film so I always hear him. Rabbit has actually always been my favorite Winnie the Pooh character alongside Piglet.
