I've never seen Return to Oz in full, although I want to. I've only seen bits and pieces of it, I never seem to catch it when it first starts. I thought the girl from The Craft (admittedly, that film came much later in her career, but I assumed she must've been chosen because she has crazy eyes for both RtO as well as The Craft. ) is an interesting choice. Some of the later scenes were laced with tension and atmosphere, so I've always wanted to see it whole.

I agree, UmbrellaFish, The Wizard of Oz would make a great park. The yellow brick road, the Emerald City, the witch's fortress, etc. The Wicked Witch's hourglass is probably the main reason I have a fondness for having them as decorations more than Aladdin really. It's always interesting to me that the witches of the North and West come immediately when they sense something has happened to the Witch of the East, so it's odd the Witch of the South is ignored altogether? I always laugh at the fact that the Wizard is a charlatan in the dream just like he is in real life; she must've realized he's a sham unconsciously. I've never read the books. That's something else to get around to one day. I wish I'd done it as a child, like I did with Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Prydain, etc.

I finally saw It: Chapter Two. The new films aren't my first experience of the story. I grew up on the original mini-series, and got it on DVD for Christmas when I was a child. Naturally Tim Curry was the one that made that adaptation (it also features Mozenrath's voice actor!). I was looking forward to Chapter Two of the new version because the adult half of the mini-series is definitely the weaker one. I just didn't like a lot of the actors they got to play the children as adults and of course the technical limitations really hampered the ending... Chapter Two was everything I wanted really. I definitely enjoyed it more than the adult half of the mini-series and more than the first part of this new It as well.

I thought all the actors they chose were pretty much perfect, particularly Jay Ryan, McAvoy, Chastain, and Bill Hader. My favorite part was probably the stop-motion (? or perhaps it only imitated stop-motion?) re-telling of the Native Americans' past with It. While the new actor for It was no Tim Curry, I never expected the new film could live up to that and I could enjoy this take for what it was. I definitely plan to get these two parts on Blu-ray in the future once the price has come down. The films came at a perfect moment in time, too, considering the theme about fear giving a monster its power. I will never forget the skit on SNL inspired by the first film; it's the one with Anderson Cooper looking into the sewer and It appears as first Kellyanne Conway, then Rachel Maddow and finally Hillary with her book to lure his hand in, then he wakes up on CNN with a balloon and It is Kellyanne Conway again doing that weird dance / jig. So, so funny, imo.

Hopefully this will trigger me to finally finish the book. Last summer I read around halfway, up to when Stanley kills himself. I also watched a film from last year called Good Boys only because I recognized the name of the boy who's going to be voicing Flounder in the live-action The Little Mermaid, Jacob Tremblay, in the info... I don't have much to say about it. I thought it was very strange, although I did laugh quite a bit. There was lots of cursing and sex talk for a movie that features a cast primarily made up of 10 year-old's. Not that Flounder is a difficult role--he could be a plush doll for all it matters--but Tremblay is a perfect choice.

Unlike most people my age (?), I did not grow up with the original It, but my husband and I saw both in the theater. Bloody horror movies are not something I watch, and I'm glad there wasn't too, too much yuck, but I definitely screamed a little in the theater (like in Part 1 with Georgie...). The beginning of Part 2 was really disturbing, but I liked the rest of it. Both movies are good.

Yeah, I can't handle gorey movies or torture porn (things like Saw, Hostel, etc.). Even something that isn't violent or bloody, just relentlessly tragic like, say, Grave of the Fireflies, I rarely ever want to watch again beyond the first viewing--even when I can objectively acknowledge the film is great. It was always more about the game / tension than the actual deaths themselves.

I remember working at a restaurant around the time the first part of the new It came out, and I overheard some girl (highschool age) talking about how she was going to see it with her boyfriend and she had no idea what the film was about or who Stephen King was. And I felt so old.

I mean, if she wasn't into horror, either books or movies, mayyyybe she just wouldn't have heard of him... people have to be introduced to something at some point. But, yeah, most people in our age group probably have heard of him. :p

^ Yeah, I was just shocked to think a whole generation might be growing up not even knowing who Stephen King was. He's a great author. I guess I lucked up to have seen and loved so many films and mini-series based on his works. The original Carrie, Cujo, The Shining, It, Misery, Rose Red (which featured the actress from Halloweentown / Quints, actually!), etc. That's why I've been trying to watch a lot of older films / shows and listening to older music, too, because I'm sure there's so many great things I don't know anything about. As they say, you don't know what you don't know. :P There are always gems waiting to be re-discovered.

When you mention older music, how far back are you going? I've always LOVED '50s and '60s music, so if you ever need suggestions, I'm your girl!

I'd love suggestions. As far back as you can think of is fine with me. I already have Aretha's hits, as well as The Supremes' and Diana's solo stuff. I was thinking of checking out other girl groups, like the ones Bette Midler covered on her last album (the Shirelles, the Ronettes, etc.). On the country side, I really love Lynn Anderson's voice. I don't think she has any CD or even digital compilations available, so I've mostly been listening online.

Then there's Petula Clark and Mama Cass.

I didn't know if you wanted albums or songs, but I'll stick with songs, since a song is more "digestable" than an album. And I'll skip The Supremes & Aretha since you already know their music! You mentioned Cass but not The Mamas & The Papas, so I did include them. I never realized just how much guy music I had vs girl as far as oldies goes. Wow. I don't know how much oldies music you already know so I put some obvious ones, but I also put some of my favorite not-as-popular songs. And I didn't put '70s/'80s classics like Elton John or Billy Joel, but I can add them too if you're not familiar... If you need me to whittle this down, just let me know. ^ Thank you! I actually know more of those than I thought I would. I do own Abba's, Queen's, and Fleetwood Mac's hits, and Michael Jackson's Ultimate Collection features a couple of his Jackson 5 songs, but I'm guessing most of the others I'm familiar with must largely come from watching American Idol all these years. I'll check out this list over time, thanks. :)

I’ve watched a lot of movies lately!

Shanghai Express- Blind. I didn’t think this movie was all great, just an excuse to watch Marlene Dietrich photographed pretty.

Knives Out- Blind. I enjoyed this! Loved the twists and turns.

Grand Hotel- Blind. I think only the second or third Garbo film I’ve ever seen. When she came on the screen, I almost rolled my eyes by how over dramatic she and her character were. But then I sort of fell in love with her. Interesting how that Garbo magic still works, 90 years later.

Flower Drum Song- Blind. This is one of the only Rodgers and Hammerstein movie adaptations I haven’t seen. TBH it’s not half as well constructed as most other R&H musicals and the songs are mostly forgettable (people will appreciate “A Thousand Million Miracles” which is a rewritten version of “Impossible” from Cinderella). And that ending!!! Oh my god... that was just awful....

Funny Girl- Repeat. I’ve seen this many times, but this time I was just in awe of Streisand. She is sensational.

Rear Window- Repeat. I actually jumped at one point! But I think I initially put this in to watch Grace Kelly in those Edith Head fashions.

Psycho- Repeat. This movie has never scared me, but it’s still a great suspense picture.

Vertigo- Repeat. I liked it much better than I ever did in the past. The relationship between Stewart and Novak was fascinating to watch unfold.

The Women- Repeat. Can we posthumously award Rosalind Russel an Oscar for her performance in this? She may be the only reason it’s still watchable 80 years later. Oh, well, she and Joan Crawford. And Paulette Goddard. And well, I’ve always had a soft spot for Norma Shearer too, even if her character’s a bit inane.

Marie Antoinette, 1938- Repeat. I used to love this version of the story when I was a kid, but rewatching it now it’s just laughably ahistorical and Norma Shearer it just maybe not the best Antoinette. Robert Morley is lovable, though— his portrayal has always colored my picture of the real Louis XVI, and I don’t think it’s far off.

The Little Foxes- Blind. I wish I’d watched this before! I enjoyed the plots and intrigue. Bette Davis is sensational.

I'm glad that Marie Antionette film has a fan, as it cost so much to make and had so much work put into it, down to getting the lace historically right! They should have filmed it in color like they planned with all the work they put into it!

I agree, I wish it had been in color! It’s almost painful to know how sumptuous the production was only to be hidden in black and white.

Honestly, I thought it was mostly fine until the ending. The resolution to me was horrifying. I thought when the wedding party was being paraded with the bride’s face masked, we’d find out that Nancy Kwan was actually behind it and Mei Li was free to marry James Shigeta— a bait and switch to fool the in-laws and make sure everybody ended up married to the right person (although, if you ask me the seamstress should have ended up with Shigeta and Mei Li should have had some independence).

But instead, the deus ex machina that saves the day is the threat of deportation! I did not know that was coming and it was just really unsettling, especially post-2016.

I did like the cast and some of the songs though. Especially Jack Soo who I thought had a very pretty, crooner voice.

The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo- web series https://youtu.be/5c5YuuMWXzg

So there’s some really funny videos (https://youtu.be/Lwotxlk668s) of this comedian named Brian Jordan Alvarez going around on Twitter right now which prompted me to look him up— first, I was surprised to learn he was Estefan in the recent Will and Grace revival (https://youtu.be/YmAxCoQAY64), but he also has a very short web series on YouTube with the aforementioned title. Let me say, I’m very impressed by him— you almost wouldn’t guess he was the same actor based on the Twitter videos, his Will and Grace appearances, and “Caleb Gallo,” very chameleon like.

The “Caleb Gallo” show is one of those series where queer identities are rampant and accepted in a way that for someone of my background almost feels like an alternate universe, but maybe that’s what LA’s really like? Or maybe that’s where the “Wondrous” part of the title comes in. Anyway, it’s a pretty funny series— especially the gender fluid Freckle character who is just hilarious.

I’m very impressed with this talent and looking forward to seeing where his career goes in the future.
