I was just wondering if there was a list anyone has put together of the best DVD/Bluray's put out by Disney, judging by video quality, extras, etc. I know there have been numerous DVD's for certain films, and just wanted to make sure I had/have the best ones out there.

List of BEST option for Disney DVD/Bluray?
Wasn't sure if this was discussed before or not, if so, a mod could please delete this.

The various DVD reviews on the main site compare all the different DVD releases of Disney's animated features in great detail, including picture quality and what kind of special features are new to DVD and what ones are missing from previous DVDs. I'm sure you can find some of the answers you're looking for from there.
And frankly, DVDizzy's extensive Disney DVD guide is one of the only things I still like about this site, since I tend to hate a lot of the things discussed on the forum.

I think it would be rather difficult to actually make and maintain a list like this because I think a lot of it really comes down to basic opinion.
However, I think it's clear that some of the best releases Disney has ever done for it's Animated Classics would be from the early Platinum Edition DVD's. They all received a lot of effort in the extras department. Sure, since Bluray really offers better sound quality and picture overall, then they may get an edge. That said, there's been soooooooooo much debate here over the years about Disney tampering while restoring cells for Bluray releases. So yeah… Your answers may be better found just by looking into each release yourself and deciding on your own terms.

This is true. There has been much debate. There have been valid issues brought up but there's also loony tune opinions that lead to piece of comedy:singerguy04 wrote:I think it would be rather difficult to actually make and maintain a list like this because I think a lot of it really comes down to basic opinion.

Also worth mentioning if you're a fan of Emperor's New Groove or Atlantis are the 2-Disc Collector's Editions from the early 2000's for having the beefiest amount of special features. All the DVD/Blu-Ray releases that came out afterwards for those movies were severely stripped down of extra content compared to the Collector's Editions.
I think the 2-Disc Big Wave Edition of Lilo & Stitch goes without saying.

I have the same problem with older non-Disney animation dvd/blu-ray releases, like Secret of NIMH and Ferngully. Ive read that sometimes the blu-ray releases are worse b/c they try to restore the films for the higher resolution and it ends up looking worse, having colors changed or missing stuff.
btw I saw the Oliver and Company blu-ray version recently and there's a line of dialogue missing, when Georgette is looking at the mirror and Dodger steps up behind her and you see his reflection in back of her, he's supposed to say "hiya!", well now the "hiya!" is missing in the blu-ray! why the hell does this happen?

I think some you need to consider buying the DVD and BD to compliment eachother and fill in gaps.
If you can get them cheap anyhow. Some can't afford nor want two/three versions of the same film.
Go for the platinum editions anyhow - they really are great and if you want the BD versions, consider getting from UK as they are mostly all available now so their value is dropping.

Re: List of BEST option for Disney DVD/Bluray?
Because studios like Disney always feel the need to change random stuff like that in their older films, no matter how pointless, trivial, and unnecessary those changes may seem, instead of leaving those movies as they were. On the Blu-Ray for The Lion King, they completely erased the effects animation of the clouds of Mufasa's ghost leaving Simba. WHY? WHAT WAS THE POINT OF DOING THAT? For that matter, what was the point of re-drawing a group of singing crocodiles you only see in a single brief shot? This is one of the reasons I stick to previous DVD releases for some of these movies rather than upgrading to Blu-Ray, but in the case of Lion King I went even further and bought an old LaserDisc copy that has the original 1994 film print on it.unprincess wrote:btw I saw the Oliver and Company blu-ray version recently and there's a line of dialogue missing, when Georgette is looking at the mirror and Dodger steps up behind her and you see his reflection in back of her, he's supposed to say "hiya!", well now the "hiya!" is missing in the blu-ray! why the hell does this happen?
And maybe it's my nostalgia here, but I also don't like to buy newer releases if they have to plaster the current Walt Disney Pictures logo over the old one. That flashy modern day CGI logo only makes me think of everything I don't like about Disney today, while the old logo reminds me of the Disney that I knew and loved. That's why my user icon is based off of the old logo.

Really? I don't remember that line being in that scene in the movie, especially in the 2002 DVD.unprincess wrote:

Anyway, I don't think anybody has compiled a comparative list in the way I think you're describing, but the reviews here are quite good for comparing the merits of specific editions. Another good site would be http://www.dvdcompare.net/. I don't think it compares formats, unfortunately, but it does compare format-specific and region-specific releases.

Re: List of BEST option for Disney DVD/Bluray?
All I know is that I've always been here out of a passion for Disney, like anybody else, only that passion is based on what Disney means to me from my perspective, and my negativity comes from today's Disney not being the way I believe it should be and the fact that a lot of the focus of this forum is always on this "corrupt New Age CGI Disney" we have to live with today. My negativity towards today's Disney stems from my passion for Disney as a hand-drawn studio and my strong belief that they're supposed to be a hand-drawn studio.Wonderlicious wrote:If you don't like what's discussed on this forum, though, why do you still post?2Disney4Ever wrote:And frankly, DVDizzy's extensive Disney DVD guide is one of the only things I still like about this site, since I tend to hate a lot of the things discussed on the forum.I'm not trying to be a smart-ass or to try and trick you into leaving (as that wouldn't be a very nice thing to do), but if I didn't like what was being discussed on a forum or if I were generally disinterested in it, I would either ignore the posts I didn't like or just not come on the forum any more. Being passionate about something is fine, but constant negativity isn't cool.

I need to check my 2002 dvd too, but I remember the line clearly. I did see O&Co. 3 times in the theater when it was re-released in 1996, maybe it was in the film print I heard it. However I dont have the vhs or the laserdic copy of the film anymore to check if its there either.Really? I don't remember that line being in that scene in the movie, especially in the 2002 DVD.

Re: List of BEST option for Disney DVD/Bluray?
Technical-wise, if it's on Blu-Ray, that's the best version unless it's the DNR-to-Death The Sword in the Stone (or The Smear in the Stone as TonyWDA dubbed it). But when you add in the nostalgia and the rose-colored glasses of "this isn't how it's supposed to look!", then it gets tricky. For one thing, you get crackpot claims that a 1994 VHS looks better than a 2009 DVD, or that because the colors aren't what you're used to on one format, that they must be wrong. Or that just because you might prefer the newer format, that you don't really care about the classics, and you shouldn't be allowed to talk about them on a forum like this. Talking about video quality with all those faded memories clouding your judgment won't do anyone any good.DisneyQuack wrote:I was just wondering if there was a list anyone has put together of the best DVD/Bluray's put out by Disney, judging by video quality, extras, etc. I know there have been numerous DVD's for certain films, and just wanted to make sure I had/have the best ones out there.
If you want all the supplements across all the releases, you might as well collect all the formats, usually something gets lost along the way and/or replaced by something new. This is especially true of some 2011-2013 catalog titles that lost their supplements entirely, or had them banished to Virtual Vault (itself a now defunct accessory). But that all depends on how much you want/watch the extras. As I got older, I realized I had less time for them, but I still wanted to know they were there, even if they might go unwatched for a long time.
Sometimes, the DVD in a Blu-Ray combo pack will be the same disc as a previous release, rendering holding onto both version as redundant. For example, the 2012 Treasure Planet Blu-Ray combo pack uses the same 2003 DVD that was made for the film's first (and only) DVD release. But this is a puzzling, case-by-case basis. That same day, Disney released Home on the Range on Blu-Ray, and the DVD in that combo pack is an entirely new disc that doesn't use animated menus anymore. WDSHE is an odd little duck in that regard.
And therein lies the problem. This forum is not just for you, it is for everyone. Disney means different things to every single person. Calling the focus of this forum as "corrupt New Age CGI Disney" shows not only an ignorance for what this forum has been for the past twelve years (of which you've only been here for one; during that solitary year, you've left it twice only to return again), but also a willful ignorance towards what anyone else may think Disney means to them. Perhaps if you'd try to get along with everyone on the playground instead of insisting it should only be what you want it to be, maybe you'll learn a thing or two.2Disney4Ever wrote:I've always been here out of a passion for Disney, like anybody else, only that passion is based on what Disney means to me from my perspective
But that's just me. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about at all, despite having been here for eleven years (two of which were spent writing reviews for the site, and the most recent three as one of the forum moderators). I mostly love Disney in every incarnation - Walt or Post-Walt, Eisner or Iger, 2D or CGI, live-action or acquired properties - so that perspective is moot to you anyway.
