Favorite Character, Scene, & Song: Tangled

Post by Disney's Divinity »

I was randomly looking through some old threads the other day, and I remembered these. These threads weren't done for all the films, so I thought I'd bring them back for the newest releases. :)

Character:
Scene:
Song:

I don't want to dominate, so I'll post my own thoughts after a few posts. :P

Character: Mother Gothel. I don't like anyone else in the movie as I find them ranging from bland (Rapunzel, royals) over mildly irritating (thugs) to super annoying (Flynn, Maximus, Pascal). But Gothel as a character is executed spectacularly, alternating between being camp, comic, sinister and threatening in mere seconds. Donna Murphy has truly done wonders for the character.

Scene: "Kingdom Dance" mostly because of the amazing score, followed by Flynn's "betrayal" scene which I believe is the only scene in the movie that made me actually care for Rapunzel.

Song: It's probably an unpopular opinion, but it's "When Will My Life Begin". I really like "Healing Incantation" too, and "Mother Knows Best (Reprise)" is chilling. "I See the Light" does nothing for me.

Favorite character(s); Pascal and Flynn. Pascal is endearing and adorable and a quite successful sidekick. Flynn is so damn sexy (yes, it's a shallow reason, but I can't help it).

Scene: Kingdom Dance. The music is quite catchy on that scene.

Song: I'm repeating myself, but "I See the Lights".

Character: It's between Rapunzel and Maximus for me. I'm leaning towards Maximus even though I remember Rapunzel being my favorite after first seeing the film, but I do like both.
Song: "Mother Knows Best" (reprise), although I also enjoy the first "MKB." After that, probably "When Will My Life Begin?" (the first, not a reprise).
Scene: "I See the Light" is the most beautiful, but most scenes with Maximus are hilarious. Besides that, probably the scene just after Rapunzel leaves the tower and she's conflicted.

Hmm... I'm not really a fan of Tangled, I think that Disney tried way too hard to be modern and hip and kind of ruined it.

Character: Mother Gothel. Love this villain, however I don't like that her complexity was ripped from her. I really wanted her to have some motherly love for Rapunzel. It could have been twisted. I don't believe that you can raise a girl for 18 years and not develop some sort of motherly affection for her. It just would have made it more interesting if she was conflicted.

Scene: Mother Knows Best Reprise.

Song: Mothers Knows Best Reprise.

Extra!

Worst Character: Maximus. One of the most ridiculous movies I have ever seen.

Worse Scene: Any scene with Flynn and Maximus

Worst Song: I've got a dream.
"In every age, Family is king,
and the bravest journeys, are never taken alone."

Wonderful thread idea, I remember it the first time !

Here are mine :

Character: Rapunzel. She is a brilliant character, full of charm and personality - a little bit goofy, little bit silly, positive, adventurous … a classic Disney character. She isn't sure of herself, but she still takes the risk to be confident and take control and reach her dream. Eugene was her catalyst, but it was always there in her. The complicated (and extremely damaging) relationship she has with her mother has made Rapunzel who she is; for better or worse. As I've said before, the parallels I've sometimes had with my own mother help to identify with her so much; it was really wonderfully written. She's a brilliant and classic Disney character.

Scene: The Floating Lights scene…wow. Just wow. I had the good fortune of seeing it in the cinema in IMAX 3D; its the only time I've ever actually wanted to reach out and actually touch what was coming out of the screen it was so spectacular. To me, that's what 3D was made for. The duet, the lush scenery, the score .. all a perfect Disney moment !

Song: When Will My Life Begin (& all Reprises). I love this song; I know it isn't the most popular as it isn't a traditional Disney Princess song, but I love it. I love the sentiment and how the song is structured. The brief (cut) reprise when Rapunzel is gazing out of her tower is heartbreaking, and when she finally sets her feet on the ground for the first time …. then the song becomes more 'Disney' if you will, with the huge climax and the beautiful shot of her in the forest.

I adore this film, and its my second favourite Disney of all time (behind Mermaid, which I don't think can ever / will ever be moved from that spot  ) but it comes a jolly close second.

Character: Mother Gothel. She is a great villain who does seem to have some love for Rapunzel, but even if not, she is a great villain who comes up with great schemes to get what she wants, and is fun and cool. The rest of the human characters were annoying to me. (Behind her: Maximus...or maybe Flynn because sometimes, sometimes he was funny...and he's really hot.)

Scene: The ending with Rapunzel's tear. Magical. Only missing some Disney dust! (Behind that: The entire scenes of Rapunzel's sad parents to the releasing of the lanterns to Rapunzel crying to Mother Gothel. They really did a great, spectacular job animating Rapunzel's emotions in that last part, and actually everyone else's emotions throughout the film.)

Song: "I See the Light". (Behind that: Easily "When Will My Life Begin (Reprise 2)", love that climax with the birds. It reminds of the climactic "Part of Your World (Reprise)", doesn't it?)

I think it's attempting to re-create that moment. It doesn't succeed to me, for a lot of reasons (worse song, worse vocal, less interesting character, etc.).

Over the years, Tangled has become a favorite of mine.

Character: Rapunzel. I can relate so much to this girl, from being sheltered and wondering when my own life will begin. It's funny when she is unsure of herself ("I have a person in my closet...I have a person in my closet!")("I'm a horrible daughter...Best day ever!"), because I am exactly like that.
Scene: "I See the Light," but also when Flynn takes her on her first journey out of the tower, when she confronts Gothel
Song: "I See the Light," with "When Will My Life Begin" a close second.

Character: Probably Flynn. I also thought Mother Gothel was a decent villain and really reminded me of my mother (not that she would kidnap anyone or anything but she has a weird thing with hair)
Flynn was funny and had a decent personality about him.

Song: Mother knows best (reprise)- I love this small song. Without the visuals, she is totally singing about Rapunzel's virginity.

Scene: Mother Knows Best (reprise)
And I do get teary when Flynn dies (and is bought back to life)
I do love a Disney film climax. I do think most of them are spot on.
Settling Soul mates? That is grim. And I've played Monopoly alone.

Oh, I forgot ! I have to give a mention to the scene where Rapunzel bumps herself in the head with her frying pan. . . Every single time I see it it cracks me up

(...and kinda copied by Anna in the curtain tassel scene too?)

Character: Rapunzel. I'm in the minority, but I love Mandy Moore's voice for her character and how goofy she is. It helps that she almost has buck teeth and sometimes is pigeon toed. How she's klutzy and second guesses herself. It makes her relatable as I think most people have felt dorky at one time or another.

Scene: Right after the king and queen release their latern and the light "spreads" as the people in the kingdom begin releasing their lanterns. With the orchestral swell, I just find the scene to be beautiful. It gives me goosebumps.

Song: Probably I See the Light. Much like Atlantica, I was really impressed when I saw the film in 3D wanting to reach out and touch the lanterns. I too had the sense that this is what 3D was made for.

Character: Mother Gothel. Theatrical, campy, manipulative, wonderfully voiced. She is fun to watch. I also like Rapunzel. She is sweet and funny.

Scene: Both Mother Knows Best sequences. Rapunzel's break down after she leaves the tower. The Kingdom Dance. Gothel's death scene.

Song: Both versions of MKB

Character: Mother Gothel. I do love Rapunzel but I just love how comical Mother Gothel is but she's also quite sinister.
Scene: The lanterns over the lake during "I See the Light". I also love the "Mother Knows Best" scene
Song: Mother Knows Best (Reprise)
