Here are Doug's takes on the Davy Crockett package films.

I haven't seen either of these films, actually- I've always wanted to see Disney's Davy Crockett stuff, but I'm waiting for the odd chance that I can find the Treasures set to watch the original episodes. Does anyone who's more familiar with the Disneyland episodes and/or films have any bone to pick with Doug's views on them?

lord-of-sith wrote:I have to say that I'm confused by the negative reaction to NC reviews on here. While I definitely think that Lindsay is a better overall reviewer because she can more accurately point out why something works and why something doesn't, I think Doug often makes valid points. Most importantly, however, I don't think either of them assert that their opinions are fact and are the only ones that should matter. In fact, when Doug makes a point that goes against popular opinion, he is very clear that it's okay to disagree with him. Is he the best person in the world to review movies in this way? Probably not, but at least he's giving notice to movies that a lot of modern audiences haven't seen or even heard of before (as is the case with a lot of his Disneycember reviews) and for that fact alone I give him credit. Plus, I don't think a review calling The Lion King overrated is going to sway anyone's opinion on the film if they already have one. That's the case with most Disney movies, especially with the people on this board, so I don't think his reviews should be taken too seriously. It's just one guys opinion.

Additionally, one of the things I like about some of his reviews (though Lindsay does it much better) is that he can put into words some of the things I've thought about films without being able to deduce exactly what it was. It doesn't necessarily change my opinion on the film, but it gives a good solid wording to my opinion. Overall, I just don't get the hate.
EXACTLY. Firstly, I think there's is some interimixing of The Nostalgia Critic and Doug Walker. Remember, the former is a character for entertainment, while the latter is a person who happens to enjoy making videos. Secondly, Doug isn't being highly analytical, but that's the point. He's just giving his opinions for the average layman.

If you guys want someone who reviews films with some more analytical lens, try AniMat. He even did his own retrospect on the Disney and DreamWorks films with less opinions and A LOT more facts.

Just don't disparage Doug just because you're annoyed in the way he presents his own thoughts.

*mini rant over*

^I'd second the AniMat recommendation. I've been following him for several years now, and I like him a lot. I can generally figure out whether I'll like something or not based on how much he liked it. His retrospectives are fun too, but a lot of his facts are ripped directly from Wikipedia.

AniMat is pretty fun and entertaining to watch, agree with the AniMat recommendation as well

None from me. I don't disagree with anything he said.

I would have liked for him to point out the fact that they hold up well in movie form becuase of the money they spent on the episodes (and doing them in colour despite TV being in black and white). That and "the show" was Disneyland and there were only 5 episodes in total represented in two movies so not that much was cut.

And while NC is far from the best person on that site (let alone all critics) I'm glad these titles are getting more exposure. Hopefully he won't skip too much of the Walt-era catalogue.

To recap he's done:

Song of the South
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Davy Crockett (with River Pirates)
Darby 'O Gill and the Little People
The Parent Trap (with remake)

Surprised he skiped both Old Yeller and Swiss Family Robinson. He'll probably do Babes in Toyland tomorrow.

Of course I'm right, I'm just that smart.

This means he's skipping Absent Minded Professor too.

Nothing wrong with his views on Toyland. You don't watch the movie for Mary's engaging plight, you watch it for the music, colour, effects and villains. And Ed Wynn. It works best when you think of it as a TV special with some Mouseketeers.

My guess for tomorrow? Mary Poppins.

Man, he's skipping over a lot of good movies from Walt's time. If I were Doug, I'd probably just focus on that period and stop a little after his death. I know that Pirates and Hocus Pocus have their fans (it is hard to hate the latter in particular, really), but they don't need as much of a reintroduction as a lot of older films do.

I agree. I understand that Doug wants to focus on the more iconic, well known live action films, but he is skipping on a lot of them. He should have highlighted some of the lesser known ones, like "Three lives of Thomasina" and "Family Band", to give the films a greater scope and maybe even helped fans discover them.

There's definitely some personal bias on here from Doug's side. While I know some people from his or even younger age groups did watch Darby O'Gill as a kid (my uncle has had his own kids watch it a few times), there's no way that it would be better remembered than Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson, The Shaggy Dog, Pollyanna etc, each of which I know have fans around mine or his age who grew up watching them. That's fine, since it's a very enjoyable little movie, but I do wish he could find time for more of these.

I also would have liked to have seen some mention of Disneyland's various plugs for a lot of these movies, and it's not like most of these are hard to find. "I Captured the King of the Leprechauns" is on Darby O'Gill's DVD, and is nearly as enjoyable as the movie itself.

Hell, it looks like he might even skip the Herbie movies as well, and those were super popular, especially the first movie which gave Disney an iconic car character before Pixar came along with Cars!

Besides Love Bug, I'm not sure if there is anything especially noteworthy he should do between Poppins and Bedknobs. He could (and I would like him to) talk about That Darn Cat or The Happiest Millionaire, but on an general overview list I'd be fine if he went to Love Bug next. Personally If I were to recommend a list of 31 titles for the month it would be:

1. Song of the South
2. So Dear to My Heart
3. Treasure Island
4. A general overview of Disney's British costume pictures (Robin Hood, Rob Roy etc)
5. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
6. Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier*
7. True-Life Adventure overview
8. Old Yeller
9. Darby O'Gill and the Little People
10. The Shaggy Dog
11. Pollyanna
12. Swiss Family Robinson
13. The Parent Trap
14. The Absent Minded Professor*
15. Babes in Toyland
16. In Search of the Castaways
17. Summer Magic
18. The Three Lives of Thomasina
19. Mary Poppins
20. That Darn Cat
21. The Happiest Millionaire
22. The Love Bug*
23. The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes*
24. Bedknobs and Broomsticks
25. Island at the Top of the World
26. Escape to Witch Mountain*
27. The Apple Dumpling Gang*
28. Pete's Dragon
29. The Black Hole
30. The Watcher in the Woods
31. Tron

*with note on sequel(s)

Anything after Tron he should have just skipped, especially when he has already talked about Return to Oz, Flight of the Navigator, The Rocketeer, Pirates and others before.

bold text is what NC has covered.

That's a really good spread! Four would especially be cool, since there's some good films in there but none of them are truly significant enough to hold their own video, at least culturally.

I might skip over the True-Life Adventures myself, since there's a lot of material in there to cover, and ultimately, it's hard to talk about documentaries (which most of them are), but they do deserve some kind of footnote with recommendation. I'm trying to think of what else I'd talk about ,but I'm drawing a blank as of now. Some great choices overall.

I think it's funny how in his Mary Poppins review he hasn't spoken anything about Saving Mr Banks. Is he gonna wait for that one for Bum Reviews?

He has now done Bedknobs and Love Bug (with notes on sequels). For my own amusement, I've updated my list in bold with what he has talked about for a comparison.

I think I should have put Freaky Friday on the list too. Maybe instead of Watcher.
