How Cinderella's 2005 Release was Restored Very Wrongly

Hmm, that's quite some work. I might do it if no one else does it first, but long story short, the restoration is the same, the transfer is the same, the colours are the same, only the resolution has been bumped to 1080p. ;)

check the first post on this page (mine) to see some screengrabs of the BD and compare to the OP

...In all seriousness, there are undoubtedly SEVERAL areas of concern with this restoration. (The comparisons speak for themselves) And frankly, I can't see how those images don't BOTHER some people. Just like the clouds being taken out of the Lion King, or the fuck ups on Beauty and the Beast's 'special edition,' (specifically the inexplicable background change in Something There) these are all horrendous examples of tampering with the original films and, really, need to be addressed. Because if they aren't, Disney will assume they have carte blanche to treat these movies however the hell they want. And the message, I think, that pointing these flaws out sends is that, "No, this sloppy work isn't acceptable for a company that is so damn wealthy. FIX THEM. Or expect to lose my money as a consumer in the future." ... :wink:

Oh my God... it looks terrible!!! Did you guys see that screen grab that has Cinderella and the Prince with the clock bhind them striking midnight??? Look at her face!! Its like all the detail is gone...look at the (lack of an) outline in her arm....
I thought the point of HD was to SEE more detail...

The Disney Classics are gone.
I believe this is going to ruin Disney.

The new generation will never know what these films used to look like with all the detail.....
And therefore have a completely different and much more shallow view of these films.

It's also very surprising to me that the Blu fanboys are so happy with less detail? Can you tell me what you love so much about that?

Not that I'm trying to defend Disney, but just trying to understand, could it be possible that the masters used for the DVD restoration had deteriorated since the LaserDisc had been made so they were unable to get a print with the finer details?

It doesn't look like these are source problems though. They look like restoration problems. I'm having difficulty believing these are the only negatives that have deteriorated. Bumbo is much older for example, the Blu-ray is gorgeous. Also, at the time when the LaserDic was released they didn't use the original negatives, they used dupes. The first movie released which has been restored from the original negatives was Bambi in 2003. If anything , the BD should look better

yes, copies of the original negatives.

I can't comment on that featurette since I don't have the Platinum release. Here's the article I based my answer on, really great article

(Sarah Duran-Singer): Oh, well, yes, but “Bambi” was the first one was did in 2003, so anything after 2003 was done in this manner.

^ Exactly! That was the joke. The fact that you can fix the colors on a cell phone app yet the professionals can't be bothered to change it. Although in their minds they already fixed it lol.

I just watched this for the first time and really, I don't have a problem with it. Since I haven't seen it on VHS I guess I am unaware of the 'proper' colours and thickness of the outlines and all, but running at 24fps I couldn't fault it. And this is from someone who gets irked by the blurry scenes when Prince Phillip rides through the forest in Sleeping Beauty, which disrupts what is otherwise a perfectly restored film.
