I would assume that it's not a dislike, they just believe it isn't the best all-around encapsulation of Disney magic. Snow White ranked #19 on my list but my whole top 20 is what I would categorize as Above Average Disney. That Top 20 as a whole only discludes the obvious Me choices for not great classic Disney films - Bambi, Lady and the Tramp, and Peter Pan - and contemporaries - Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, and Princess and the Frog. Is it really the movie that started it all? Or just a jumping off point to get things really cooking with Pinocchio (better than Snow White), Fantasia (better than Pinocchio), and Dumbo (better than Fantasia)?Dr Frankenollie wrote:I'm surprised by the low ranking for Snow White in a lot of these lists.
What's with the dislike?
You want to talk about something suspicious- how about the fact that way too many of the 90's movies rank high as a group? People are way too attached to those films. I feel like they forget what classic Disney is all about. To me, Aladdin was a lot of fun and an incredibly exciting and ... Actually, here's the weird thing about Aladdin: I walk away from it and all I remember is the nostalgia. I wish I could describe it, it focuses more on the hype and everything around it than watching the movie (those experiences are surrounded with a lot of unfortunate cringing at kids younger than me - I was always the oldest of any group of kids I was in - who just had to repeat every single line that came out of Robin Williams' mouth). And by hype I mean games, video, computer, artwork- really incredible and inspired merchandising. But every time I actually sit through it, I do a little more cringing than I usually admit. It averages out by the end, I look back on it and think it was a good ride. Just maybe lacking a bit in depth (maybe that's just the musical side of it- I really can't stand musicals, I'm talking about can't stand to a degree that most people reserve for country music, and most of the songs in this movie are overrated- especially the songs with Aladdin and Jasmine's characters' singing voices).
Anyway, my point (I had one after all)- "Nu" Disney is way too different than classic Disney and sure it started in the 80's (and earlier than Little Mermaid- which was a truly rare film even by 80's Disney standards) and for me, Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Pocahontas did all that needed to be done to service the artistic niche Disney hadn't yet in the years Don Bluth was whipping their asses. Pixar handled the future. Other than that... there's no reason Disney has to be so goddamn trendy with trends that feel like they weren't invented by Disney anyway. Disney are always capable of doing something great without copying someone else's style. Or using manipulations like annoying, overrated child actors or copying the premise from a movie they already made. Or trying to use animation to make soulless, fluffed up Broadway musical styled silliness. (That last one, I believe, is the biggest problem I had with Tangled- which otherwise was a surprisingly decent movie.)
I just felt like saying all this.
Or maybe some of us prefer the movies in the 90s because we think they are more entertaining and had better storytelling than other Disney movies. Feel free to disagree on this but I don't like the insinuation that we are wrong and are blinded by hype and nostalgia.
And you say we have forgotten what classic Disney is all about? What, then, is classic Disney all about?

Wow, this would take ages.
I'm just gonna post my top 10 for now, and my least favourite 5.
By that, I mean the ones I got most enjoyment from, & least enjoyment.
I'll fill in the rest at a later date
Top 10:
1) Tangled
2) Bolt
3) Treasure Planet (these are my DEFINITE top 3 as of 2011 for me)
4) The Princess & The Frog
5) Cinderella
6) Pinocchio
7) Mulan
8 ) The Lion King
9) Beauty & The Beast
10) Sleeping Beauty
Bottom 5:
47) Oliver & Company
48 ) The Fox and the Hound
49) Home on the Range
50) Chicken Little
51) The Black Cauldron
Now don't get me wrong, each film has parts that I enjoy, but I just enjoy these the least...except The Black Cauldron, I seriously did not enjoy that LOL, Gurgi's voice was probably it's only redeeming quality, even though it was also annoying

Say that to the animators who are responsible for 90's wave of movies and see what they think of it. In some cases, they're more fanatical fans of the original class of Disney movies than we could ever be.qindarka wrote:Or maybe some of us prefer the movies in the 90s because we think they are more entertaining and had better storytelling
There's a Cyril Proudbottom quote that's just perfect for this occasion. (He's a character from a classic era Disney film, by the way.qindarka wrote:Feel free to disagree on this but I don't like the insinuation that we are wrong and are blinded by hype and nostalgia.
