So, I just want to be clear, this is about what we think the best is (vs. the worst), but not favorites-based? I wanted to be sure. Though I guess it still ends up somewhat subjective*, , based on our ideas of what constitutes "the best."
I tried to be objective though, and focus on how well-crafted I think they are rather than "what I like."
1. Pinocchio
2. Bambi
3. 101 Dalmatians
4. Fantasia
5. Beauty and the Beast
6. Lady and the Tramp
7. The Jungle Book
8. The Lion King
9. Sleeping Beauty ~ Even though I do feel it has flaws, I recognize it's one of their strongest films for many reasons (only 5 through 6 feel near-perfect to me), based on the animation, the suspense, and the music. It's a fairly different take on the fairy tale formula.
10. Dumbo
11. The Little Mermaid ~ I feel it goes from powerful scene to powerful scene and all the characters are well-explained and fairly depthful, with some weak moments inbetween here and there. I feel it's mostly equal to Snow White, though I do think the music is much stronger.
12. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs ~ I know some would find this controversial, but I honestly don't think it's as well-crafted as the above. I've always felt it gets too much praise. Most of the characters are weak, most of the mannerisms are overdramatic, the animation is moderate but not perfect (the Evil Queen and the Prince are the ones that shift weirdly throughout their scenes), the story drags on similarly to Cinderella and SB, etc. However, I do think it is near the top of their best, and it portrays several of its scenes very powerfully (the opening with the mirror; Snow White's terror through the woods; "One Song"; the Queen's transformation; Snow White's "death"; and the funeral). If this were favorites-based, it would've ended up around 30 for me, so I do feel I'm being fair here.
13. Peter Pan
14. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
15. Cinderella
16. Lilo & Stitch
17. Pocahontas
18. Mulan
19. Tarzan
20. Tangled
21. The Rescuers
22. Aladdin ~ It's a charming film with a lot of good moments, but it is a bit imbalanced--beginning with Genie's intro.
23. The Hunchback of Notre Dame
24. The Great Mouse Detective
25. Hercules
26. The Emperor’s New Groove
27. Bolt
28. Ichabod & Mr. Toad
29. Fantasia 2000
30. Meet the Robinsons
31. Robin Hood
32. Alice in Wonderland
33. The Fox and the Hound
34. The Black Cauldron
35. The Sword in the Stone
36. The Princess and the Frog ~ I hate to rank it so low, because I do enjoy it, but I agree that it probably was pumped out too fast and the film wasn't as good as it could have been. Fixing the quickness of the early scenes, some balancing out of the swamp scenes, more humanTiana and Naveen, toning down of Louis (plus keeping the backstory he once had), adding another scene of Facilier and getting rid of the slapstick would all help the movie. The animation also could've benefitted from more time, though I still don't think it's that bad.
37. Dinosaur
38. Oliver and Company
39. The Rescuers Down Under
40. Brother Bear
41. Treasure Planet
42. The Aristocats ~ True, TP and BB have a few very annoying characters, but Aristocats is the blandest of the bland--and somewhat annoying itself.
43. Atlantis: The Lost Empire
44. Home On The Range
45. Chicken Little
Ranking the Pixar films:
1. Toy Story 2 (after Lady and the Tramp on the main list)
2. Toy Story 3
3. WALL E
4. Monsters, Inc. (TS3 through Monsters I would place after Dumbo)
5. Finding Nemo (after Snow White)
6. The Incredibles (after Pooh)
7. Ratatouille
8. Toy Story (Ratatouille and Toy Story after The Rescuers)
9. Up (after Hunchback)
10. A Bug’s Life (after Robin Hood)
11. Cars (after TP&TF)

Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ ~ "The Fate of Ophelia"
Taylor Swift ~ "Eldest Daughter"
Taylor Swift ~ "CANCELLED!"
I'm surprised that everyone puts "Home on the range" on the bottom of the list.
I can see why people don't like the movie much, but there are 3 songs in there that are among the best of all the Disney Classics in my opinion.
"Will the sun even shine again", "Little patch of heaven" and "The Yodel song".
I would have thought that people would place this at least higher than Atlantis, Chicken little, Treasure planet, Winnie the pooh and Dinosaur.

I agree about the music (I bought the soundtrack when it was released). But I do think it's one of the weakest films they've had. It was bottom of the barrel for me, whereas at least TP, Atlantis, and Dinosaur looked as if some effort went into them, story-wise--though that didn't keep them from being severely flawed.

Bolt is my favorite of the 4 recent CGI films produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation; I also like it better than most Pixar films, and I LOVE most of those. Having said that, I haven't seen The Truman Show, so any "rip off" was lost on me and I just enjoyed it for what it was.Dr Frankenollie wrote:I'm surprised by the love for Bolt; it was a dull rip-off of The Truman Show starring the bland Miley Cyrus. It also features the most irritating character of all time: that horrible, unfunny hamster that makes Louis the Alligator look like Sebastian. To each his own, I suppose.
I'm just a HUGE fan of movies that depict the bond between dogs/pets and their humans. I LOVED the ending, and the film touched me very much.
And here is my main thread response:
I find this INCREDIBLY hard, much harder than the "Rank and Rate the Pixar Films" thread (which will no doubt get bumped up next month) as there are five times the amount of films to sort from WDAS. I'm going to "cop out" and just list my fave 16 of the single-story features, but after my annual summer viewing project of the complete series, I may try to rank them all.
I find it easier to rank them in small groups against each other, such as "The First 5", "The Package Films", "The Renaissance", etc.
One thing that is really hard about trying to do a complete list is where to place the Fantasias, the musical "package films", and the Latin American features. I love those films to death, but more for their music and visuals; and the lack of a single narrative story makes them hard to rank against the others which are much more story-based.
Note that this is not an attempt at a universal "Best" list. I believe those are relative to the taste of the individual, so this is just my faves list. Or the ones that are "best" in my eyes, based subjectively on what I like, look for, and am moved/inspired by:
Note the bias of animal films over romance/princess films (although I DO think the princess films are darn good and actually love them!)
Note also that any one of these could move up or down 1 or 2 places on any given day, but the first is a SOLID LOCK at number 1:
1) Dumbo
2) Pinocchio
3) The Many Adventures Of Winnie the Pooh
4) The Rescuers
5) Peter Pan
6) Lady and the Tramp
7) 101 Dalmatians
8) The Fox and the Hound
9) The Rescuers Down Under
10) Oliver and Company
11) Bolt
12) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
13) Cinderella
14) Sleeping Beauty
15) Beauty and the Beast
16) Pocahontas

I was more surprised that Fantasia and Mermaid were there. At least Hunchback is imbalanced (though I probably wouldn’t put it there either).Scarred4life wrote:You put Hunchback in the same category as Home on the Range??!!

Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ ~ "The Fate of Ophelia"
