I'm pretty sure that The Little Mermaid and Oliver and Company were both made in a 1:66:1 ratio, or some ratio not too far off (perhaps 1:50:1, akin to 35mm still photography). The VHS releases/Sing Along clips are clearly cropped, and I don't see why Disney would have opted to crop already matted versions.Escapay wrote:I have a feeling that Oliver & Company and The Little Mermaid (except for the CAPS sequences) were in Academy too, but I haven't found any open-matte images to confirm it. All of O&C's 1.33:1 images on the DVD are P&S of the widescreen matte (so maybe it was animated in 1.66:1?).

The trailer makes it sound that the sequel is also going to be on Blu-ray which contrasts the insert which says "3-disc combo pack includes Blu-ray, plus 2 DVDs". This doesn't make sense unless both movies are included on that one Blu-ray.

That probably is the case. They're both short movies, so they could fit on one disc, provided they won't fill it with bonus features (yeah rightSotiris wrote: Thanks for sharing![]()

My guess is it will be 1.78:1 to a) not have to make Disney-View borders and b) fill the 16x9 frame completely for those who hate pilarboxing (however slight).disneyfella wrote:Please, Disney, finally release The Fox and the Hound in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.75:1!!!!
You can add, "For the first time ever!" on the cover of the box.

If you wanted to by the original movie, how is having the sequel included taking away from your experience of watching the original? It's not like they altered the original. I can understand boycotting this release if the original was edited for some reason, but I just don't understand why having something else included (for probably not too much more money) makes what you want to buy any less enjoyable to watch. Disney has released tons of movies as two-for-one packages. How can you complain about getting a good deal, and if you want both movies, it takes up less shelf space. If you don't want to watch both movies, don't watch one.

Um, you know, the price Disney's "two-for-one packages" is significantly higher than an individual movie, so technically its not really a good deal when you're stuck paying for the second movie, in this case, a crappy midquel. Even at a discounted price, I could totally boycott that. I don't want to support their mediocre sequels and in-betweenquels. Personal choice. What I don't understand is people settling with mediocre products and finding it a great deal.

For me the problem with 2 Movie Collections is from a film collector's standpoint. It's not enough to get irate about by any means, but it is annoying to have no choice but to buy THIS edition if I just want "The Fox and the Hound". If they released a single editions as well (like the "Tron" blu-rays) where you had a choice, I would be fine with this set. I get that it makes money and yadayada, but I don't personally collect Disney movies from a marketing standpoint. The original Fox and the Hound is a classic to me. The second film was not made by the same people or even the same studio, so it's like "Gone with the Wind" ONLY being reissued as a 2 Movie Collection with the awful tv miniseries "Scarlett" ...it cheapens the package sitting on my shelf. And this isn't like they are including it as a special feature. Both FatH films are given equal billing on this which is just dumb.

The average consumer buying releases like this because "it's good, wholesome Disney entertainment for the whole family" are not Disney snobs like us and will see more value simply due to the extra running time. Frankly, I'm surprised that Disney is even bothering to put this one on Blu at all at this point when they have plenty of other films that are guaranteed to sell more.
Personally, I'll be happy to pick this one up regardless.

The Fox and the Hound is one of my favourite movies ever (if not my favourite). The fact that they made a cheapo midquel to it is upsetting as it is (it cheapens the original), but packaging it in the same case is where I draw the line. If they want to release it separately, whatever, go ahead. But the midquel upsets me, and I do not want to own it, even if it comes with the original at a discounted price. It's not a good deal if you never ever ever want to own the midquel.gardener14 wrote:If you wanted to by the original movie, how is having the sequel included taking away from your experience of watching the original? But that's just me. I'm becoming less Disney snobbish as I go (heck, I bought Lion King 1 & 1/2 today) but when it comes to my favourites, I become mother bear.

Is "The Fox and the Hound" is coming out on DVD or Blu-Ray on the same month as "Dumbo"? I'm not 100% sure on that. Maybe if "Fox and the Hound" is either delayed or pushed back the next month will be October or November. I don't really know. I also have the "Gold Classic" version which is a bootleg, so I have to get the DVD of the movie soon.

Personally, I can't stand most of their sequels, and I never watch them. Most of them made me literally fall asleep anyway (Bambi II, Jungle Book II...I never even got through them!) The only ones I can stand are the Lilo and Stitch series, and that's only because they were actually as funny and entertaining as the first film (and don't get me started on why the series was released outside of chronological order).
But, to please everyone, they really need to give the consumer an option. In the UK, "Bambi" was released either as a stand-alone title or in a two-pack with its sequel. While I have no idea if they're going to go back and release it that way in the U.S. it sounds like a good idea.
Also, it looks like the Lion King will be released separately, if you want the sequels you have to buy a big boxed version of 10 discs that costs $100 (you know--they could make that one a lot cheaper if they didn't have to include standard def versions of all three films; just seems like a big waste, if you've already upgraded to blu and never look back, like me...)
Moving forward, I think we all agree that Disney needs to offer options. The Bambi thing is weird--lots of people in the U.S. want Bambi II on blu and Disney missed the mark that time. Maybe they'll correct it. Lots of people don't want Bambi II on blu and are content with the disc they already own. Great. But give others those options.
In the future, they need to figure out what they're going to do with films that have lots of sequels. Lilo & Stitch has three sequels, and if they go the "Lion King" route, I'd frankly have trouble seeing people shelling out $100 for a 12 disc set with half of them being standard def discs that most people will never even watch. "Aladdin" had two sequels; there's another potentially bloated package. "Cinderella" and "Little Mermaid" could also potentially wipe out our wallets.
So in the future, they need to do stand-alone blu's and then double-disc sets for:
Aladdin
Atlantis
Brother Bear
Cinderella
The Emperor's New Groove
Hunchback of Notre Dame
Jungle Book
Lady and the Tramp
Lilo and Stitch
Mulan
101 Dalmatians
Peter Pan
Pocahontas
The Rescuers
Tarzan
