The Disney Attractions Discussion Series: Pirates...

This is a must-ride on any trip to Disney. I particularly like the prologue with the talking skull and crossbones and the treasure chamber. The gags still amuse me, and it's a nice way to get cool and damp without being drenched.

It's a fantastic attraction. The way it completely immerses you is what makes it so special. My favourite part is the cannon-fire/ship-fort battle. It will always hold a special place in my heart now too since my husband proposed to me at the Blue Bayou in 2003.

Did you get to dine in the terrace that connected to the attraction itself? That woulda been the icing on the cake!

WDW: Wasn't as crazy about this one, climatic scene is weird, but still it's POTC.

Paris: The queue area rocks. It's all grottos, presumably because of the rain frequency. (I'd never been to any of the parks on a rainy day before or since.) Original "Bride Chase" scene in French (no food chase or foodstealing kitty here), with swordfighting pirates fighting over a woman at the end. Got backed up while waiting to unload both times, but otherwise a very impressive presentation of original ride set-up plus new technology.

Three different versions = The same ride at each park. While all the rides have generally the same concept, they vary from park to park.

The best version you'll find at Disneyland Park in Paris, because it has advanced audioanimatronics (the two fencing men are just amazing) and the better storyline (the ghost chambers are the final scenes before a big explosion kills the pirates).

I've only ever seen the WDW version--Paris & Anaheim are definitely on my life list, though. It's certainly one of the best WDW has to offer, although it is in need of some deep restoration, especially with the audio. If they should go that route, though, I'm concerned it will get a Tiki-type "Under New Management" facelift, incorporating elements from the soon-to-be trilogy franchise of POTC flims...unless perhaps they could introduce lots of newer animatronic technology in the process. If it's cool enough I'll be sold on it, I suspect. For years I thought the Maelstrom's brevity was worth it just for the fiber optic spell cast by the troll: it was state of the art back in the day!
(Seriously though--I don't need any latter-Disney birds in my Tiki experience, thank you very much.)

They outline a few of the changes you are likely to see to the Anaheim ride next year.

To address one of your questions they say:

"The audio replacement project has the Imagineers assigned to this task giddy, as they've been able to do wonderful things with the new digital versions of the original 1967 audio tracks."

Many of the initial changes sound like they will be audio changes, but there will also be:
- the original 1967 pirate ship known as the "Wicked Wench" has been remade into the Black Pearl seen in the movies.
- The familiar animatronic pirate captain will be replaced by a new animatronic version of Captain Barbossa from the movies, and Captain Barbossa's parrot will also make his big debut before he returns repeatedly later on to help the new plotline along from scene to scene.
- Captain Barbossa will have dialogue that will accuse the townspeople of hiding Jack Sparrow from him...New effects are also planned in this area that will simulate cannonballs passing overhead through the use of sharp blasts of air aimed at the boats.
- Three new Captain Jack animatronics

And to hark back to the question about differences between the rides, the WDW version is shorter apparently, which will effect the changes to that ride:
- The Walt Disney World version will also play out much the same with new animatronics, although that truncated 8 minute version of the 15 minute long Disneyland original will have to squeeze some of the special effects into much smaller spaces and shorter time frames.

But my questions is kind of stupid..

How many feet is the "drop" in the ride,and when does it occur. Things like this scare me and I will scream* when I go on this if nobody tells me.

The drop occurs near the beginning of the ride. You'll view the pirate treasure and encounter the famous talking skull that says, "Dead men tell no tales." I don't know how many feet the drop is, but I would estimate 20 feet. It's a fun drop, but it's not nearly as intense as the 52 1/2 foot Splash Mountain drop.

By the way, I'm just speaking from my memories of the Disneyland park. Please correct me if I've stated something inaccurately.

I don't mind the Sparrow version as much as other people outside the obnoxiously redundant script. We don't need the Well scene to remind people "HEY, WHERE'S JACK SPARROW" when Barbossa established that about five seconds earlier. It just assumes riders are goldfish and the new Well captain's voice just sucks in comparison to the original J Pat O Malley recordings.
