Disney at the Oscars 2010: UP, Princess and the Frog

I was so happy Michael Giacchino won for his amazing score. There was so much heart in his music, which you could tell was lacking in the competition. (Hans Zimmer was a close second in my book. ) I almost melted watching his acceptance speech. More great music is sure to come from him.

Now concerning Pixar films, I've enjoyed Giacchino's music the more because it doesn't blend together like Newman's. Newman has the heart, but he has a tough time making something "original" because: #1 it's just his style and #2 he's been stuck writing music for the Pixar "buddy pictures" for so long. As a result, it seems like he's stuck in a rut creatively. I don't think it's possible for him to write bad music, but as the case with TPatF it just feels like recycled music. Sorry Randy.

Yet Spirited Away won the Oscar and that was a hand-drawn animated film. And to be honest, I don't think any Pixar film, no matter which one, would have beat Spirited Away were they released in the same year.

Agreed! Watching Spirited Away nearly three years ago, I still remember it was the most intense, fantastical, and magical experience I have ever had for any movie.

Recycled? I've been listening to his songs all my life and never noticed any similarities to past songs.

Example: Ray's theme in TPatF was very similar to score in Toy Story.

LULZ. Yes, a Pixar hater who's been buying all their movies on Blu-ray and wanted "Up" to win best animated feature at the Oscars. Clearly, I have it in for Pixar. I couldn't possibly, say, just dislike Randy Newman, could I?

And I stand by my statement that "The Time of Your Life" is a lousy song. I'd just like to see what solid facts you have backing up your statement that it's an American standard apart from your "common sense and educated taste".

Newman is so inncuous and charming, the only reason someone could rise to the level of "hating" him is if some terciary issue was fanning those flames...

...or that I don't hate him, I just find a majority of his music bland and uninteresting. You seem to be confusing "dislike" with "hate". You should watch out for that, kiddo.

Again, never disappointed that there were no musical performances from the nominated songs this year. It makes the show not even worth watching for me.

Yet, instead they do some stupid interpretive dance to the nominated scores.

Oh, my goodness! Theater Hopper is so awesome. I've been a regular reader of it for almost three years now. Nice to see some fans over here at UD.

And yeah, that comic was hilarious, mainly because I had the same reaction when they started playing the Up score.

See, that's strange because, to me personally, arguing that a Pixar film made thus far could be better than Spirited Away only strengthens Pixar's overrated status. I suppose Toy Story could stand somewhat of a chance because of its achievement in animation, but, as a film alone, it's not better than SA to me.
