Any reason the official BBC Doctor Who website is promoting "Gallifrey" on its homepage?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/s4/
Could it be simply down to the impending release of The War Games on DVD or... well, we all know the Tenth Doctor's life is coming to an end. Is Gallifrey involved? Are the BBC simply reminding viewers of the Doctor's Gallifreyen heritage?

Could this be the final "secret project" that the DW team are working on?
'Who' movie to be confirmed at Comic-Con?
I'd certainly be at the midnight release for this, sonic screwdriver in one hand, fob watch in the other, Chuck Taylors on both feet, red/blue 3-D specs over eyes, and a trench coat with pockets containing my journal of impossible things, a satsuma, and a stethoscope. Jane will likely shake her head in embarrassment, while Kram will be wearing the same thing.

I actually hope that's not true. Especially if its a 10th Doctor (and no doubt Rose "Bloody" Tyler) movie when we'll be happily (fingers crossed) following the 11th well into Steven Moffet's run.
I think most times, its a mistake making a TV show into a movie. The first X-Files did so superbly (IMO), but by all accounts the second movie was a failure.
Most of Doctor Who's strengths are a direct result of its financial and technical limitations, and its these also which make us appreciate the effects more when we do get them. I know any BBC funded/co-funded movie won't have Transformers levels of finance (thank God!) but the need for spectacle and action could overwhelm the programme's quirkiness.
Talking of Transformers and action movies, I09 has a rip-roaring review of the first two episodes of Torchwood: Children of Earth, comparing it favourably with action movies:
That said, while I am enjoying Children of Earth enormously so far (check out the UNIT "Easter Eggs" in episode 1) the fact is we are going to end up with a story taking 5 hours to tell.
The first two episodes have both suffered and benefited from padding. They have seemed a little slow in places, but on the other hand, we've had more time to stop and simply include some character moments. But ultimately, the story so far could have been told in half the time and I think, overall, doing so would be preferable.
To go back and compare Torchwood: Children of Earth to a movie, it appears from what we have seen so far it would work better as a 2.5 hour movie than a 5 hour epic.

http://io9.com/5309813/is-torchwood-fin ... doctor-whoWe've waited all summer for an action movie with genuine (not canned) excitement, twisty plotting, and real characters. We'd never have guessed it would come in the form of Torchwood, formerly known as Doctor Who's ridiculous spin-off.

Just a quick reminder that from Monday it's Torchwood week on BBC America, with the 5 part Children of Earth mini-series airing on consecutive nights.
It's already been shown here (and indeed, I have the Blu-ray) but it went down a storm, with uncommonly high ratings for the season and more importantly, almost unheard of audience appreciation figures. It appears almost everybody who watched it thought it was fantastic.
IGN has a pre-screen preview/review (with spoilers) here

However, I feel this needs to be shown

IGN wrote:Sci-fi television storytelling has always had a few comfort zones and unwritten lines that would never be crossed. You'd never see children seriously harmed on television; you'd never really see how dark and desperate humans can be at the worst of times; you generally don't kill off your main characters. Shows like Battlestar Galactica have had their share of dark and dreary moments, but nothing can compare to the gut-wrenching dire shock that Children of Earth delivers. Also, unlike Battlestar Galactica, there's a lot of humor here. The first three parts of the mini-series feature some great snappy dialogue and some genuinely funny moments. It's mostly fun and games until the true intentions of the alien threat, the "456" are revealed, and then you witness some of the darkest imagery and disturbing story events I've ever seen on television.

I'll hold off on posting the details, but urge anyone who likes Torchwood to watch Children of Earth. I recorded it during the week and had a marathon-viewing (along with a friend and our self-invented drinking game), and it was fantastic. Watch it.

Yeah, Yeah. Torchwood starts tonight on BBC America. Quick reminder and BBC America trailer

However, today has also had two other exciting news items from the Whoniverse as shooting begins for the 5th series.
The costume for the 11th Doctor has been revealed, as well as news that Alex Kingston is returning (presumably as River Song in a Time Travelers Wife kind-of-way). As you can see (and look around the web for clearer images) Matt's costume seems to be based on a 1950's school science teacher.

Which Torchwood Member Are You?
You are Toshiko
It's tough being a geek. People walked all over you in high school, and you're finding that adult life, sadly, isn't so different. But without you, our computers would crash, we couldn't program our DVD players, and our plasma screens would be on the fritz. Clearly, you're a necessary part of the operation, even if everyone else doesn't always realize it...

You think with your heart. It's maybe not the most effective way of leading, but your sensitivity and compassion are strengths when it comes to dealing with people. However, "heart" gets a bad rap these days; ruthlessness and ambition are more prized qualities. But you get the job done, and you're usually able to live with yourself the next day. Now, about that little affair with Owen...

Confirmation that the Daleks are back in the 2010 series (and perhaps Winston Churchill? after all he was vetoed from use in the novel series due to potential conflict with the TV show)
http://blogtorwho.blogspot.com/2009/08/ ... aleks.html
Some people are already moaning about the Daleks being back, but I don't mind. It's what people expect. To some, it will forever be known as "Doctor Who and the Daleks"

Well, I don't mind. After all, we got a Dalek story (or two) every year from 1963 to 1967 and we still got stuff like the superb Power of the Daleks towards the end of the run (even if it had been tainted with stuff like The Chase earlier on).
Apart from the Evolution of the Daleks episode (Daleks in Manhattan was more than okay) the thing that has bothered me most about the Daleks treatment in RTD's reign is the need to seemingly destroy them more or less completely at the conclusion of each story. It simply makes each "return" more unbelievable (although, of course, in a comic-book pulp fiction type of way, it shouldn't really bother us).
RTD's run also introduced the Cult of Skaro, which I think was the best thing to happen to the Daleks since the original Davros in Genesis of the Daleks. One of the reasons I dislike Evolution of the Daleks so much is it ruined the Cult - and Dalek Sec who (as the Black Dalek, not his "evolved" form, had really struck a chord with the public here).
But everything's new with series five, including if rumours are to believed new logo, new opening, new TARDIS interior and exterior and of course, a new creative team. I'm sure Moffat's take on the Daleks will be different to RTD's. So in a way, perhaps even the Daleks will be new - just as when taken away from Terry Nation, Power of the Daleks showed a whole new cunning and devious side to the by then tiring tin-cans.
As for Mondasian Cybermen, based on comments posted by The Moff on TheDoctorWhoForum when he would occasionally post, I wouldn't be surprised if we see them when/if the Cybermen return. He seems to perfer them too.
