Well Torchwood Series 2 started last night on British television, and what a start it was.

As some people may remember, I've had a sort of mixed reaction to the first series of Torchwood. I wouldn't go as far as to say it was as bad as some people think, but most of the time I felt it fell into the "could do better" category.

This opening episode may not be the best Torchwood to date (I still think They Keep Killing Suzie is - hopefully Suzie will be back in S2 somehow) it certainly was better than the rest.

There's so much to recommend this episode; Captain Jack was more like his carefree old Doctor Who self (although he was still a little arsey at times), it was full of humour, the team worked better together and seemed to have proper interaction, James Marsters was inspired casting as Captain John Hart - the anti-Captain Jack and most importantly there appears to be the seeds of a proper series arc this year.

Most pleasingly for me, there were several in-jokes in the dialogue from "Not Excalibur?" when John talks about team names (RTD's original premise was for the team to be called Excalibur) to Ianto saying "You're good on roofs" to Jack.

I was confused by the "coming soon" trailer, until about half-way through I realised it was showing us clips from the rest of the series, not just next week's episode. I loved how Martha's theme from Doctor Who was played when we saw Martha in the trailer!

I've long had faith in Torchwood, despite its somewhat sticky start. I hope that now as S2 continues, my faith is justified. The UK press seems to be full of positive reviews. It will be interesting to see what some of the TW whingers on ZetaMinor's forum think.

Here's the end of episode "Coming Up..." trailer - which promises the return of Captain John Hart

I lóved Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. I watched it with a friend and we were giddy all the way through... So many things to be happy about...
I absolutely adored Ianto in this ep. He had some great jealousy-moments. Also, dating!
Hmmm, I can see I'm not yet ready to actually write a coherent review... I'll be back once I've seen it again (A)

Elisabeth Sladen confirms she's involved with Doctor Who Series 4 and (most excitingly) The Sarah Jane Adventures are back this year.

For 24 Episodes!

That's more than double last year's Sarah Jane Adventures run!

Gaaaahhhh!

24 additional episodes of SJA, and the frickin' BBCAmerica hasn't made any announcements as to whether they'll even air it here in the States or not! And the show won't be released on R1 DVD unless it's aired in R1! DAMMIT! They could easily put it in the 5 pm slot where "My Family" airs.

How many episodes of Series 4 is she gonna do? Hopefully some of the ones with the Sontarans.

And I'm still scratching my head as to how they're really gonna bring Rose back, what with the whole "not able to cross universes anymore". Unless the Doctor goes back in time to when Rose didn't know the Ninth Doctor yet, gets her help, then wipes her memory of the event?

I'm so excited for Series 4. Sarah Jane, Martha, Captain Jack, Rose, Sontarans...and of course, Donna Noble.

I think SJ is back for only one or two episodes - most likely the climax to the season if we are to believe the various newspaper rumblings. Hopefully with K9 and and I would like to see a brief cameo from Maria, Clyde and Luke from TSJA.

Spoiler
Newspaper reports seem to be correct about Davros, because Character Options who make the action figures have slipped up and made known that two radio controlled "Season 4 Davros" figures are going to be released in 2008. In addition the Studio Tour feature on the Series 3 DVD set shows that BBC Wales have made new daleks with a slight redesign which allows them to break the casing down into more parts which makes them easier to store and transport. So it looks like we will get a Dalek/Davros story in S4.

As for Rose, I really do think that bringing her back is a mistake. Her "story" was one of the few companions in the entire history of the series who had an exit that was actually meaningful. But the word is Rose won't meet the Doctor at all and its only one episode, so I'm willing to believe that they can pull it off.

oh dear. Looks like some backpeddling:
DoctorWhoNewsPage wrote:The Sarah Jane Adventures

Despite Elisabeth Sladen's statement to SFX that a second series of The Sarah Jane Adventures has been commissioned, Digital Spy quotes a BBC source saying that no decision has yet been made.

Meanwhile, SFX has updated their report, suggesting that the "24 episodes" may represent two series being filmed back-to-back.

Well what a wonderful episode of Torchwood. Nothing that exciting. No big explosions. No aliens. No frantic running around. Just (for the bulk of it) the rather strange and sweet relationship between Toshiko and a solider from World War I frozen by Torchwood and revived once per year.*

This is what Torchwood does best - the smaller more personal stories. And to be honest when it does stories which no other show can do. In this case, because of the story's concept and also because of the characters. I'm so happy to see another Toshiko driven story. She's so adorable. (In fact, she's so adorable I need to give myself another Tosh avatar I think.)

After a slight misstep last week with a rather generic story not particularly well realised on screen, it looks like TW S2 is back on track.

*Being as its stated Tommy has known Tosh for 4 days – it dates Tosh joining Torchwood in 2004/2005 – well before her appearance in Doctor Who's Aliens of London episode (shown in 2005 but set in 2006 – remember everything jumps forward 12 months at the start of the episode when its revealed Rose has been missing for 12 months). So it would appear Tosh in Aliens of London was working for Torchwood at the time.

Well, the official statement ís that she was undercover for Torchwood during Aliens of London... It wasn't done deliberately at the time, of course, but I've grown to accept her role in AoL as Toshiko rather than 'Asian chick who later appears in spin-off'... It does make sense, in a way.
I lóved yesterday's episode. Just before the credits, the 'We're Torchwood', almost made me jump off of my couch. Serioulsy, one of the best shows on telly right now.
Actually, I think right now it ís the best show on telly ^^

Oh she always was Tosh - she's credited as Dr Sato in AoL. It just seems that Tosh is so out of character in AoL - she seems surprised Aliens could exist, and let's face it, is overtly scared of the "space pig" - you've got to assume she's seen worse at Torchwood.

Well, that was one of my gripes with yesterday's episode, actually. Gwen was so scared of the 'ghosts'... I just thought 'you're in Torchwood, woman! You've seen way worse!'
Seemed weird she got so scared... And maybe Tosh is just scared of pigs (though I don't know why, SpacePig was adorable) ;)

Escapay rejoice: TSJA is coming to America!
In an interview with Russell T. Davies, the Los Angeles Times mentions in passing that The Sarah Jane Adventures will be broadcast in the United States on the Sci Fi Channel beginning in April.

The article also states that Doctor Who's next season will begin on Sci Fi in April. The BBC has not announced a broadcast date for Series Four in the UK, but the program will air in Britain before any international broadcasts.
I'm not sure how the Sci Fi channel will actually show what is clearly a children's programme. (And yes, it is a children's programme). I don't think that they have any children's programming at all do they?

Actually I just got The Doctor Who Encylopedia and it says this about Tosh in Who.
Sato, Toshiko: Undercover Torchwood operative who arranged to be in charge of the investigation into the supposed alien that crashlanded into the Thames. She and the Doctor determined that it was just a normal pig that had been augmented by alien technology.

Only a few weeks to go now before Doctor Who S4 is unleased on UK and US tv screens. I expect the publicity and hype to kick off over here this Easter weekend.

And I think my bring back Jackie campaign, on this very website, may have worked...

Image

Other people have run bring back campaigns for [deep breath] Rose Tyler / UNIT / Captain Jack Harkness / Donna Noble / The Sontarans / The Daleks / Davros / The Ood / The Judoon / Mickey Smith / Martha Jones / Sarah Jane Smith / K9 / The Yeti / Yartek, Leader of the alien Voord / The Kandyman / Professor Zaroff - most of which appear to be equally as successful as my "Bring Back Jackie" campaign.

I've very excited and looking forward to each episode. The season finale this year promises something super special, with a load of old faces - both friends and enemies [?] making an apperance.

Doctor Who: S4
Easter weekend, and the series trailer has been released. You can view it online here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/

It's a bit poor compared to some of the trailers we've had in the past (particularly S2 and S3's pre-launch trailers) but it shows Donna, Martha and Rose as well as a few intriguing shots. From a purely British point of view, it's great to see Bernard Cribbins take such an important role (reprising his role from Voyage of the Damned who is "co-incidently" Donna's grandfather). Especially as I "know" what his character will be doing in the series finale episodes.

Torchwood
Torchwood was always a little hit and miss. And while this year's series has been better than last year's, it's fair to say its still had its misses. But not as many as last year and just as last year's series got better as it progressed, so has this year's. The penultimate episode aired on BBC Three last night and quite frankly was stunning. In fact the past three or four weeks of Torchwood have been home runs in one form or another, be it the almost knockabout farce of Gwen's wedding, the eerie "ghosts" of old-time circus performers, the emotion of those left behind when a loved one disappears or the memories of how each of the team joined Torchwood.

This week's was particularly good as it actually fleshed out the mythology of the show and showed how Jack, Tosh, Ianto and Owen joined Torchwood. I got a little excited at a couple of points expecting to see Suzie again (alas, we didn't, but she was name checked). Oddly, Tosh's "secret origin" was sort of similar to how I imagined it. Ianto's most definitely wasn't, and neither was Owen's (I always imagined Owen simply watching hundreds of people die by an alien disease rather than what we saw here; although what we did see somewhat explains his current attitude towards lasting relationships with women).

The programme continues to frustrate in little ways. Endings are constanly rushed and most often or not ill-judged, for a sci-fi show to seems to dabble in pure fantasy too often, and for me, there's the constant lack of development with the Weevils. But it's definitely showing signs of maturing - I'll be sorry if the rumours are true and Torchwood is reworked for its third series. Apart from Doctor Who and Primeval, it's the only British Sci-Fi on the television, and (this year especially) its addresses plots neither of these could due to their "family" demographics. I hope it stays on our screens – for many years to come.

Traditionally the Week's Radio Times has a Doctor Who supplement which lists the episode titles and teasers. RTD writes these himself. So I would expect the list to be available on or just before Wednesday next week.

EPISODE GUIDE

Post by Prince Charming 12 »

Thanks for the update. I thought it would have been available by now, with the new season quickly approaching.

I was pleasently surprised when I read that the Sci-Fi Channel was going to start airing Series #4 on 4/18. Normally we had to wait until the season was completed in the UK, before airing on other channels. I guess the BBC had a change in policy or Sci-Fi shelled out some big bucks for the earlier than usual airing dates.
