Pinocchio Blu-ray/DVD Preview

Post by lighthousemike »

So this will be my first blu-ray preview, i dont have a BD player on my computer so im not sure how ill capture the screen, well see what i can do.
The BD also comes with the 1st regular DVD so below are screen caps form it.

I went through the BD and i must say - WOW!!!

A double wow i must give to the special art designed to fill the black bars on the right and left side of the screen, as this movie 's ratio is 4:3 - it adds so much and fits amazingly with the film (its a choice to view the art, you can play the film with the black bars as well if you wish)

maybe ill take pics form my big screen...how 3rd world of me.

And among the trailers there are Snow White bluray trailer - which i loved, also Monsters inc. blu-ray trailer with new trailers for UP (haven't seen that one before - not the same one showed during the superbowl) and a trailer for the 2nd tinker bell.

more shots are coming - ill post them all on my flickr page here - http://www.flickr.com/photos/lighthouse ... 443615248/

WOW, it looks great! does the DVD have the music video on it?

I also don't have a Blu-ray player but I am looking into it. I want to put on on my PC as well. The price is still kinda high though, ughhh. :(

well i have a blu ray player its the PS3 - i just dont have it connected to my pc
i think if youre looking to buy a bluray player get the ps3 - it plays all discs, while some standalone bluray player may have problems playing some discs - so its somethign to think about it.

i took some digital pics of my tv (its kinda big 52") so i hope you guys will be able to see how amazing the picture is - i was just blown away looks like a brand new movie!!

im uploading now

Mike you rock! (as usual)

The border design on 16:9 displays doesn't seem as bad as I though it would be.

That is...quite unexpected. Sleeping Beauty had a trailer. I know it's because of the Princess connection, but I'd imagine many Pinocchio fans would be excited for The Princess and the Frog, as well.

Thanks for these pics "lighthousemike", I have my PS3 that came with a built-in Blu-Ray player, but I don't own it yet, if I'm thinking about getting a Disney film on Blu-Ray someday, will have to wait and see. I will get the DVD instead when it comes out in 2 weeks.

It's been about 31 years since I first saw this Disney movie in a theater back in late 1978 along with the re-release of "The Small One", I was about 3 months old when I was still in diapers, my parents took me to the movies to see "Pinocchio" which was the very first Disney film I ever saw in my life.

I love the restoration of this great film, but I'm dying to get it! This movie brings back memories. 1978 was a good year for a Disney reissue. "Pinocchio" has been one of my all-time favorites Disney film since I saw it at the very beginning of my life. "The Small One" was a great Disney short film, but it's 30 minutes long, and it was a holiday classic, I missed the first half of the film right before "Pinocchio" started. "The Small One" was included on the "Classic Holiday Stories" DVD.

If I can get the DVD when it comes out in 2 weeks, I will watch "The Small One" first, and then put in "Pinocchio" and bingo! Just like the way it looked when it was since I first saw this movie back in 1978.

What a great memory that I remember so much. There was one scene that I do remember is the ending to "The Small One" where it shows a bright star in Bethlehem where baby Jesus was born. After it ends, it goes right into the opening credits to "Pinocchio". This is a pic of what the ending might looked like right before "Pinocchio".

Image

After that, the opening credits roll where it says "Pinocchio" in the title card.

Image

After watching this film as I first saw it in a theater, there was one final scene that I remember was the ending to the movie. I cried and cried and I saw the ending to this great film where they showed a star in the sky as the song fades into the end title, and then, while the end title was shown, the curtain was closed while "The End" still shown towards the fade out. What a great memory that has been, they're were applause at the audience and that film that got me into Disney so much. That's where my Disney journey began. If you haven't seen the ending title to this film when I first saw it at a theater, here it is.

Image

I hope "lighthousemike" would love to see the restoration of the end title in this Platinum Edition when it comes out, if you have it, please post. Thanks for showing these pics from the Platinum Edition release of "Pinocchio", one of my all-time favorite Disney film and it was the very first Disney film I ever saw since I was a baby.

Thanks for the caps, Mike!

I would've sworn they'd use the 2002 restoration done for the UK release, but that doesn't seem to be the case. It really does look like they did the whole thing over again from scratch. Maybe now they fixed the controversial pink flame shot from that transfer.

For comparison's sake, the 2002 is on the top, the 2009 is on the bottom (note: these aren't the exact frames. I don't have access to the 2002 UK Special Edition. The caps from that are from Magical Screencaps.com).

The colors look a lot more vivid and Technicolorish in this new release. The 2002 one looked like someone's hand slipped while adjusting the brightness and contrast.

Nice. Can you post the Candle shot? I mean the one that sparked what amounted to yet another restoration debate?

People were up in arms over how the center of the flame is pink and how the lighting in the room seems flatter than in previous versions. The page where the debate begins is here, complete with caps from the the two previous transfers on laserdisc:

It looks gorgeous! :o I can hardly wait to buy my copy.

How come the Blu-Ray version has two discs? I thought just one Blu-Ray disc could hold everything that's on the most packed Collector's Edition DVD ever and still have plenty of room.

I was actually asking to compare the new restoration to the 2002 one. Sry if I wasn't clear on that.

It can if the material is in standard definition, which will be the case with the BDs for A Bug's Life and Monsters, Inc. in May. When the supplemenrs are in high definition, however, they take up more space. That's why Sleeping Beauty and WALL-E are two disc sets.

Monsters' Inc. is actually still 2-discs. It's third disc is the DC. And I bring up my point from that topic of an HD movie being at least about 10 gigabytes, even with AAC 2-channel stereo audio.

I forgot all about high definition stuff requiring more space than standard definition. Pardon my brain fart.

I can't see a hint of pink in the flame in the Blu-Ray pic. I'm only seeing a pure white color there.

The blu-ray looks so amazing. Out of curiosity, does the insert say which Platinum will be released after Snow White (just making sure).
