A HARD DAY'S NIGHT - The Beatles (1964)

That would go at the top of my list of favorites.

:)
I love the Beatles songs just as much as any other, but I've never regarded "A hard Day's Night" as a movie musical. Just as a story wrapped around some Beatle-hits.
But in this case, may I also mention Yellow Submarine? :D

Isn't that what musical is all about? A story with lots of music, be it Beatles or Gene Kelly, or Fred Astaire, or any star or stars. I thought that what a musical was, a story that is pushed along by the music.

"A Hard Day's Night" was not only a musical, but it told the story of a day in the life of then super-group The Beatles. A little light in the story, I will give you that, but still it was a story of one-day in the life of The Beatles.

What is the story-line of "The King and I", "Mouline Rouge", "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers", or even "Singing In The Rain"? They are light stories wrapped around a lot of musical hits.

:)

Perhaps, but in "Singin' in the Rain" and "Moulin Rogue", the songs do serve a dramatic purpose or comment on the plot. "A Hard Day's Night" is a great movie no doubt, but I wouldn't say it's a musical.

Hate to bump up a page-2 topic, but I've got a lot of catch up reading/posting to do and this one seemed like a nice quasi-old topic to contribute to. Anyway...

10. Reefer Madness (2005) - this is the third incarnation of the musical (there's a 1998 LA version and a 2001 Off-Broadway version), and has a few minor changes but otherwise is the same. It's a rather hyperactive and obnoxiously funny take on the original propoganda film, with excellent performances by Alan Cumming, Christian Campbell, Kristen Bell, and the rest of the cast. My favorite songs from it are "Mary Jane/Mary Lane" (which was written for the TV version), "Romeo and Juliet", the S&M-themed "Little Mary Sunshine", and "The Brownie Song".

9. Swing Time (1936) - this is the sixth of Fred & Ginger's ten films they did together and many call it their best. I definitely agree with that sentiment as it's got such memorable numbers and songs, with "A Fine Romance" and "Never Gonna Dance" being the best. I enjoy their other nine films, but Swing Time has gotten the most replay from me.

8. Newsies (1992) - where else can you find Christian Bale dancing? I enjoy this one mainly for the songs and dances rather than the story and acting. "King of New York" is probably my favorite song, with "Carrying the Banner" being the best dance number. I haven't watched this in a few months, I'll probably give it a spin later this week.

7. The Sound of Music (1965) - I've seen this film on an old pan-and-scan VHS more times in my childhood than anyone ever should, and usually if/when I watch it now, it's kind of jarring to see it in its widescreen splendour. But it's still a favorite of mine, as a kid I really loved "My Favorite Things", but I think today my favorite song is "Something Good" (it's the romantic in me).

6. It's Always Fair Weather (1955) - singing while on roller skates. "Blue Danube" set to depressing lyrics. The delightfully imaginative "Thanks A Lot, But No Thanks". And Cyd Charisse dancing with boxers. Seriously, how can anyone NOT love this?

5. Across the Universe (2007) - I only just saw this a month ago, so its "recentness" is probably a factor in why it's on the list as opposed to films like Oklahoma! or Guys & Dolls (both of which I enjoy, but not in the top 10 sense). But either way, I was simply floored by every aspect of it. It would be an insult to Across the Universe to call it a mere movie. It's an enlightening experience, a visual orgasm.

4. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) - I still remember when I first saw this on Turner Classic, and after Robert Osborne's introduction, I just thought, "How the HELL can they make this kind of story into a musical?!?" Thankfully, they proved they could and it's become a real favorite with "Lonesome Polecat" (all done in one long take!) and "Bless Your Beautiful Hide" being my favorite songs.

3. Mary Poppins (1964) - perhaps my favorite Disney movie ever, at least in the live-action category. This is another that I watched frequently in my childhood, I always loved "A Spoonful of Sugar" (which actually taught me how to snap my fingers!) and "Step in Time (which was probably why I was skinny as a kid). These days, the film gets probably one viewing every couple months, and is one of the few where I can watch it and still believe it's *real* and not a movie.

2. Singin' in the Rain (1952) - I almost didn't put it on the list because it's become too much of a stock answer that its placement would seem like a cop-out to fill up the list. But the more I thought about it, the more I remembered how much I loved it and I don't care if it seems like a stock answer or not. I really love the entire Broadway Ballet, but I think my favorite part of the movie isn't even a song/dance: it's the part when Don first jumps into Kathy's car and she gets completely petrified that he's a gangster or a killer of some sort.

1. The Band Wagon (1953) - it's got a very basic story that takes like...ten words to explain: "People put together a show despite the leads always clashing". It's been done in other films before and after, and is pretty standard. But this musical ranks as my favorite for a lot of reasons beyond the story (which, even if standard, has some cool variances to it). It's got one of the best pairings the screen has ever seen (Fred Astaire & Cyd Charisse), some of the best numbers ever done ("Dancing in the Dark" especially, I've always said it's one of the most sensual dance numbers ever put to celluloid), and a wide selection of instantly hummable songs ("That's Entertainment!", "By Myself", the unused "Two-Faced Woman"). I really can't think of that much to write for this, mainly because I love everything about it that mere words couldn't explain it all.

I'll try this again:

1. My Fair Lady (1964): This movie is just perfect. It's a simple as that I just can't find anything to complain about it. There's not one song or sequence I wish wasn't there, the plot never drags the acting is superb and the songs are wonderful. The production values and the staging are also great and this movie is just amazing to watch and listen. I think it's the best movie of any kind.

2. Gigi (1958): Same reasons as My Fair Lady, but the songs are not as good.

3. Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971): 25th Anniversary Edition: My favorite Disney movie, that I've always been watching and enjoyed watching forever. When I saw the extended cut for the first time I couldn't believe the film got better, but it did. My only hope is that one day Disney will find the last missing scene or recreate with with computers based on the still photos and the audio they found.

4. Singin' in the Rain (1952): For all the reasons listed above but I think that Broadway Melody number grinds the plot to halt unfortunately.

5. The Music Man (1962): It's all about Robert Preston. Without him this great movie would have never been made.

6. Hello, Dolly! (1969): I don't care what people say, I love this movie. It's full of energy and amazing sets and dancing and catchy songs. Yes Barbara is one of the worst persons you could possibly cast in the title role (she's at least bearable though) which is why this movie is lower on the list.

7. Oliver! (1968): Has the catchiest score of any musical mixed with some great dramatic scenes that really make you involved with the plot.

8. Victor/Victoria (1982): Really funny with a great Henry Mancini score.

9. The Happiest Millionaire (1967): Gives me the same warm fuzzy feeling as Bedknobs but I haven't know this one as long.

10. Hairspray (2007)

Hey Flanger - I love 'Hello Dolly' as well. I think Barbra is great in the role. Beautiful movie and a lot of fun.

My top favorites are:

1. Mary Poppins

2. The Music Man

3. Hello, Dolly!

4. Hair

5. The Sound of Music

6. Sweeney Todd

7. Meet Me in St. Louis

8. The Wizard of OZ

9. Victor Victoria

10. West Side Story

"Easter Parade" was on my top 10 list, but I think 'Sweeney' has bumped it for the present time. It's the first movie musical in recent years that I really love.

Um, You've never heard of Swing Kids Albert? And I think it's time to change my list. New additions are in bold and I'm not including Disney films this time.

1. My Fair Lady (1964)
2. 1776 (1972): Criminally under-rated musical that works well as both a historical drama and a musical comedy, has all the elements of a good story and knows when to use them. The song "Molasses to Rum" is quite chilling. It's even fairly historically accurate.
3. Hello, Dolly! (1969)
4. Gigi (1958)
5. The Music Man (1962)
6. Oliver! (1968)
7. Fiddler on the Roof (1971)
8. Singin' in the Rain (1952)
9. The King and I (1956)
10. An American in Paris (1951)

Honorable mentions:

- Oklahoma! (1955) (If only it weren't so long!)
- State Fair (1945) (really very charming)

Wow! I haven't posted here yet?
In no particular order, and I may list a few over 10...

Lili (1953) - WHERE IS THE DVD!!!?? Right now, this is my most-wanted film not on DVD.
Annie (1982)
Annie Get Your Gun (1950)
Cats (1998) - is this a musical, or a taping of a stage play?
Doctor Dolittle (1967)
Fiddler on the Roof (1971)
Grease (1978) - While I enjoy this one, I wouldn't normally include it on a top-10...
The Music Man (1962) - BAH!! to the remake!
My Fair Lady (1964)
Oklahoma! (1955)
Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
Singin' in the Rain (1955)
Duck Soup (1933) - is that really a full musical? I love the film, though
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
The Sound of Music (1965)
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)
Mary Poppins (1964)
White Christmas (1954)

I've probably left a few off...

1) My Fair Lady - To me, this is the musical that has everything. Brilliant performances, beautiful sets and costumes, and excellent songs and rich orchestrations.

2) The Music Man - Often tied with My Fair Lady for me.

3) Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella - 1957 - I know it's not a theatrical one, but since it's a television movie musical, I'll place it here. To me, Edie Adams is the only one who can play the Fairy Godmother as Rodgers wanted her - beautiful, classy, and very impish. Julie Andrews is also spectacular in the role, and the cast of Jon Cypher, Kaye Ballard, and the others are equally spectacular. While the 65 version I feel is rather cheesy and overacted, and the 97 version just way overblown, the original to me does its original source material justice in the casting, music, and charm and humor.

4) 1776 - A very big thanks to Flanger-Hanger who recommended this film to me as it's now one of my favorite musicals.

5) Little Shop Of Horrors - Maybe it's my love of everything kitschy 50s and bad sci-fi horror films, along with 1950s music as well, this has always remained a favorite of mine since a kid.

6) Hairspray - Little Little Shop, just good campy fun with great songs.
