The 2008-09 AND 2010 Doctor Who (& Spin-offs) Thread
Well, I've only seen him in the Sally Lockheart Mysteries, but I liked him in that (I've got to start watching Secret Diary though... After I read the book).
I'm pretty happy about this choice. It's difficult to predict what he's going to do with the part, and that's something I really like. The only thing I don't get, is the Moff said once he'd want the Doctor to be a weird but friendly grandfather-figure. Unless they're planning on keeping Matt on a lóng time, he's a far cry from a granddad...

Interesting choice, I guess one can't really say much since probably not that many people have seen him in anything, but I saw some little bits of Sally Lockhart and I actually do remember that he was in that one.
It'll be interesting to see what kind of Doctor he's going to be and I agree with Jane that he is cute.

Okay, so I've got two questions about the Next doctor Christmas special (spoilers if you haven't seen it yet).
1) Cybershades. What's the deal? What are they, where are they from, what's their purpose? Not so much as a mention after the Doctors's recognision of them being something new...
2) Miss Hartigan/Cyberking explosion. If all the Doctor did was break the cyber connection, then why does everything explode? Sure, miss Hartigan sees what she's become and goes mad (as per The Age Of Steel), but it shouldn't influence the Cybermen/shades/king, since the connection was supposedly gone.
If anyone knows, please tell me. I've tried to let it go, but I can't...

Cybershades
According to the latest issue of Doctor Who: Battles in Time, Cybershades are crude conversions with Dog brains rather than human. This was IIRC speculated in the episode (I'm not watching it again, because the DVD will be out soon so I'm saving my second viewing for that). Apparently, the Cybermen didn't have the tools required in Victorian London to perform proper conversions when they arrived (not that it stopped them building a ****-off massive robot-ship!) I guess they're the Cybus Cybermen's version of Cybermats.
CyberKing
Well, this is a typical RTD ending to a Doctor Who story, so you're going to have to just put up with it. Only another 4 to go, and we know the last one's ending won't quite be a cop-out...
My take on it was Miss Hartigan had sufficient mental strength to partly overcome the CyberKing's control and take control of it and the Cybermen. However, I think the Cybermen had previously conditioned her to see things their way and remove her positive emotions (Wasn't it stated that Miss Hartigan was known for her kindness previously at one point? Again, I'll have to rewatch) and this was what gave her the desire for power. The Doctor apologises and says something like "I've let you see what you have become" or similar, again indicating she was under some form of influence, even though she was in control of the Cybermen at that point. So I think the Doctor managed to shock all conditioning from her mind, and then, when she realised what she had become, she self-destructed (just like the Cybermen did in Age of Steel when they attained emotion) and still be connected and to the CyberKing/Cybermen and still in control, they too destructed.
As for Matt Smith's casting, I won't deny that I am disappointed. But on the plus side, two of the shows most popular Doctors (Tom Baker and David Tennant) were previously "unkowns" to most people at the time of their casting. There's no doubt the public finds it easier to accept someone totally new in the role than an established actor (I feel this was Peter Davison's biggest hurdle... to too many people he was just Tristian from All Creatures Great and Small). Matt Smith apparently has an excellent stage reputation and let's face it, was hand-picked by The Grand Moff. So I'm still giving his casting two thumbs up!

Thanks for explaining, Netty. Especially about the Cybershades, it seems to make sense.
The ending just seems like sloppy writing to me, but it's pretty well-known endings aren't Russel's strongest point... Your take on it pretty much mirrors my own. I think the line you're thinking about is 'All I did was break the Cyber connection, leaving your mind open. Open, I think, for the first time in far too many years.' This does imply the Cybermen had a grip on her fár before she became Cyberking. Still doesn't explain her exploding, but I guess I'll have to let it go... I usually don't mind Russel's endings, but this one irks me. He could've done a much better job, we all know he's capable of it.
I'm very happy I know what the Cybershades are now, at least I can accept them.

Michelle Ryan for the New Doctor's companion? Actually, I can actually see this happening. After all, Who shares a lot of the executive production staff of Merlin, and Ryan supposedly wowed the Merlin lot so much that they wrote her into more episodes...

Feel free to Jane
It's not really Dr. Who news but I figured this might be a good place to post it.
Christopher Eccleston will be filling the role of Destro in the G.I Joe movie due out this year.
Ok that's it go back to your conversation on the fun-ness that is Dr. Who

I'm also excited for the return of Captain Erisa Magambo (of "Turn Left"). Does this mean that UNIT plays an important part in "Planet of the Dead"? Also, is this alternate Donna-verse Magambo, or the prime universe Magambo?

I was happy! But I was annoyed that I was so tired tonight that I kept falling asleep whilst watching episodes 5-9.
And Cherny, that was an awesome pic.

the Doctor Who news page made my heart go Boom!
Now all we need is Maria back (or given the confirmation some/all of one of the 2009 specials will be filmed in the US, could it possibly be Washington? And could the rumours of Maria being the temporarily companion be true?)
Talking of the 2009 specials, I'm guessing Lee Evans has the part that was offered to Nick 'Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz' Frost, but had to be turned down due to other work commitments.
Excellent. I'm just revisiting the first series of the Sarah Jane Adventures now (only the Lost Boy Part 2 to go) and I'm enjoying it even more this time around. In other news the magazine also reveals that K-9 is due to play a large part in Series Three of The Sarah Jane Adventures. He is likely to appear in around 6 episodes of the 12 part series.

So, um, as Albert knows, I've recently been sucked into Doctor Who. While I don't know much about it, I really like what I've seen so far.
I've only watched about the last four episodes of Series 4 and the last four episodes of series 5. I just watch whatever I catch on BBC America or the Sci-Fi Channel.
Spoilers.... I think?
I just finished watching the end of Series 5 and it was so sad! Poor Donna Noble.
I hate it when they erase the memory of good characters.

You mean series 3 and series 4, as Series 5 doesn't start shooting for another few months.plinks wrote:I've only watched about the last four episodes of Series 4 and the last four episodes of series 5. I just watch whatever I catch on BBC America or the Sci-Fi Channel.

If RTD can figure out how to clone the Doctor so Rose has a happy ending, they should figure out how to give Donna her memories back without killing her!

Well, supposedly she will be back, with Wilf (and hopefully Sylvia) in the post Xmas 2009 specials (a two parter). Don't know if this means she'll get her memory back or not though... part of me loves the idea of the Tenth Doctor sacrificing his life to save an ignorant Donna who doesn't even know who he is.Escapay wrote:If RTD can figure out how to clone the Doctor so Rose has a happy ending, they should figure out how to give Donna her memories back without killing her!

Rumour based Spoilers Supposedly, and looking very likely given some of Simm's comments about being "David's Master" and "I'd only come back for David" and finally a "No Comment", the Master will also be involved. And looking to create a new Gallifrey again. I'm sure he'd be interested in a human/timelord metacrisis...

These weren't posted on this thread yet, so...
Anyways...I'm pretty sure the hardcore fans know this already, but...
A couple weeks ago, promo pics of the easter special were posted on David Tennant's site, and now there are more Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead Pics and Video w/ Michelle Ryan up on http://www.david-tennant.com/ . They're also up on David Tennant's Facebook Fan Page =)

Hi Nandor,
I was feeling slightly off-colour yesterday, so I rewatched The Next Doctor on DVD and while watching it I was thinking about Mrs. Hartigan a bit more.
Now, I'm not sure if I'm right, but I think Miss Hartigan was supposed to be a mirror for Jackson Lake. If you think about it, both probably had similar experiences when first encountering the Cybermen. Both probably came from different beginnings though - there's enough hints that Miss Hartigan was somewhat bitter going way back. Probably due to being a strong, independent woman in Victorian society. After all, she's still a "Miss" at an advanced age - no doubt most Victorian Gentlemen would view this as a stigma.
But like I say, I think both are shown to be opposites. Hartigan saw what the Cybermen could do, and embraced it, probably to save her own life at first, but she came to believe in most of their philosophy as it helped feed her bitterness and urge for revenge (which ultimately was stronger than anything else) while Jackson Lake chose to be the Doctor. To be heroic, and kind, and brave. He may of used it as a crutch, to hide his own emotion, but as our Doctor says (to paraphrase) "You were still all those things".
As for the Doctor showing Hartigan what she had become, well, its just an RTD climax. I don't have a problem with the logic of it, I'm sure it could be justified, but its far too quick and feels like a "technobabble" solution without the explanation.
I'm more bothered about how some low on power Cybermen managed to build a giant stompy transformer robot (powered by children!)

Rose
Aaagggghhhhh!
http://io9.com/5179385/why-does-doctor- ... ck-in-time
An interesting read. I'm pretty sure most people were expecting Martha back, and Donna/The Master (and don't forget Wilf) have been strongly rumoured for months (remember my "Xmas 2009?" avatar?) but Rose. Again?!?
No.
I actually don't mind the Daleks coming back once per year, or the Cybermen returning post their Alt-Universe epic in S2. Or indeed the return of the Ood or others. Doctor Who IS about the monsters as much as the Doctor, and the universe created is vast enough to allow more explorations of each (we'll just ignore the "Evolution of the Daleks" mis-step - why did they have to change and then kill Dalek Sec? Why?). But the return of Rose...
My only hope is it could be in an Androzani type flashback during regeneration.

Ironically, I was watching The Caves of Androzani last night and thinking, "Well, if they want to bring Rose back, I wouldn't her floating head talking to the Doctor during his regeneration"
I think the only companion who really should return for his regeneration story is Martha. If only to give her a really proper goodbye from the Doctor (the S3 goodbye felt like a really rushed decision on her part even if she had a year to think about it, and the S4 episodes barely gave her interaction with him). I'd love for Donna and Wilf to return, but really can't see it happening unless Doc's regeneration triggers something in Donna...but then we'd have to have another story to continue that, and since the regeneration likely will happen at the end (unless they decide to make Part 2 of the story be an Eleventh Doctor story...), I doubt that will happen.
And where the hell are my Mondasian Cybermen?!?
