It's been about two months since I've watched it (off the DVD I bought online, remember?) and I can sincerely say I liked it!
Even a mere two months makes the memory of the film rather fuzzy, but I clearly recall enjoying Timothy Dalton's performance as the villian. It's a shame his two Bond movies (which I've never watched) were failures, because he looks like a natural James Bond. Seems Brosnan continued in his elegant, charming style. I think I found the protagonist's girlfriend to be slightly artificial, whereas I was satisfied with the lead actor (where did I read that he screwed up the part? Was it UD's review of the film? ... if so I don't think I agree).
I believe the UD review calls the special effects "primitive" or "crude", which I find a trifle harsh. Though not mind-blowing, I thought the jet-pack effects were perfectly adequate. Moreover, the climactic Zeppelin-type airship scene was pretty awesome-looking.
I'll just say though that the DVD simply doesn't do the movie justice. The greatest offender is sharpness, which in this case has the consistency of butter. I'm surprised the Rocketeer himself didn't fly into an estranged mass of blurry pixels and never found his way out. I also got the strange sensation that I was viewing the film through multiple layers of transparent plastic. In general the picture was muddy, murky and unappealing. I'm a person who believes that video quality is very important when it comes to enjoying a film, so this disappointed me. At least it was anamorphic though. I don't even want to imagine what the non-anamorphic Region 1 DVD looks like.
I wish I remembered more ...
