Sleeping Beauty Platinum DVD Preview (Scans Added)
Colin Jacobson has posted his review of the DVD:
http://dvdmg.com/sleepingbeautyplatinum.shtml
Something bizarre I noticed was that for the audio commentary paragraph, he describes the audio documentary from the 2003 SE rather than the confirmed one with John Lasseter and Andreas Deja. I'm pretty sure it was just an error on his part from copying and pasting elements from the old review, but I have to admit I'm curious. Only the BD press release elaborates on the commentary participants; the DVD one doesn't. Could it be possible that the DVD really does retain the old commentary while the new one is a BD-exclusive? If so, that makes the inclusion of the DVD with the BD set more valuable.
Also, the galleries on the new DVD (as expected) don't contain the commentary bits. What's odd is that some sections on the new DVD contain more stills than the old one, but other sections contain less. Observe:
2003 Special Edition:
Storyboards (42 Stills)
Concept Art (142 Stills)
Character Design (217 Stills)
Layouts and Backgrounds (83 Stills)
The Sleeping Beauty Storybook (15 Stills)
Posters (15 Stills)
Disneyland Walkthrough (14 Stills)
Live-Action Photographs (23 Stills)
Behind the Scenes Photographs (27 Stills)
Publicity (21 Stills)
Merchandise (18 Stills)
Theme Parks (26 Stills)
2008 Platinum Edition:
Visual Development (150 Stills)
Character Design (181 Stills)
Storyboard Art (80 Stills)
Layouts and Backgrounds (55 Stills)
Live-Action Reference (70 Stills)
The Sleeping Beauty Storybook (25 Stills)
Production Photos (51 Stills)
Publicity (34 Stills)
So to break it down:
* The PE's "Visual Development" is another name for "Concept Art," and it actually adds 8 stills.
* The PE's "Character Design" drops 36 stills from the SE.
* The PE's "Storyboard Art" adds 38 stills to the SE's collection.
* The PE's "Layouts and Backgrounds" drops 28 stills from the SE.
* The PE adds 47 stills (!) to "Live-Action Reference," 10 stills to the "Sleeping Beauty Storybook," and 24 stills to the "Production Photos."
* The PE combines the "Posters" and "Publicity" galleries from the SE, though if it included everything, there should be 36 stills not 34.
The "Disneyland Walkthrough," "Merchandise," and "Theme Parks" galleries have been dropped on the PE. The Disneyland one is understandable considering we're getting that nifty feature in place of it, but the other two are disappointing.
Of course, it's possible that Colin miscounted (his gallery numbers for the SE are wildly different than Escapay's, so I decided to use Escapay's for this comparison). I guess we'll find out for sure when the UD review comes up.

Thanks, Kelvin!Kelvin wrote:Colin Jacobson has posted his review of the DVD:

It probably is, as about 3/4 of his review is a word for word copy-paste from his old review (mainly, everything about the film, the commentary bit, most portions of the a/v section - heck, he even says the 2003 widescreen is 2.55:1, and most portions about special features that were already on the 2003 SE). For example, even though BBFC classifed "The Peter Tchaikovsky Story" in its extended 40-odd minute form (with the Walt intro), he still refers to it as a feature that runs only 30 minutes.Kelvin wrote:Something bizarre I noticed was that for the audio commentary paragraph, he describes the audio documentary from the 2003 SE rather than the confirmed one with John Lasseter and Andreas Deja. The only material that's really completely newly written is just stuff about the new special features.
Jacobson's written fine reviews in the past, but I've noticed that when it comes to a title that gets revisited, he does "cheat" a bit by reusing his old review material. However, he really should have actually assessed each and every aspect of the discs without assuming they'd be the same as the old one. I'm surprised he actually was able to find the discrepancy between the art galleries!
If that's the case, then boo to Blu-Ray for having the new audio commentary but yay to DVD for retaining the valuable audio documentary! Still, I'll wait for UD's review for a more accurate assessment of the DVD and special features.Kelvin wrote:but I have to admit I'm curious. My numbers are accurate, his are incorrect. I copy/pasted them from the Word Document I keep with these kind of lists (made throughout the years), and when I did Sleeping Beauty for that list, I actually went through the entire disc twice to make sure all the specs were right.Kelvin wrote:Of course, it's possible that Colin miscounted (his gallery numbers for the SE are wildly different than Escapay's, so I decided to use Escapay's for this comparison). I think he might have counted a few of the explanatory text screens as part of the stills (I differentiated between them, I believe), but I don't know how he got some of the other numbers different from mine. Still, it's upsetting that the docent audio (on 80 stills, not his reported 92) on those aren't carried over. Heck, they could have strung it all together and made it one 26-minute featurette called "The Art of Sleeping Beauty"!

That was a good review, not a great one, but good. Ill still be picking this one up though.
I have a question though. Who here has the 2003 DVD and will be picking up this Platinum Edition??

By far the most pointless thing ever.
Don't have the 2003 DVD, so I'm going to get the new one. However if I had the 2003 DVD I probably wouldn't get the new release.Coolmanio wrote:Who here has the 2003 DVD and will be picking up this Platinum Edition??
I'm probably a minority on this board, but I would have liked to had a pan and scan version on this set like the 2003 one. That way I could watch the widescreen, and since its so wide everyone else I know that hates widescreen could watch the pan and scan one. 2.55:1 is going to be painful on small TVs. Lady and the Tramp was...

Albert: Yeah, I trust your info more than Colin's which is why I used your gallery count.
I'm hoping the Cine Explore and Visual Commentary on the BD make up for the missing stills and docent audio. My only experience with Disney's Cine Explore is Ratatouille, and that disc had an hour's worth of featurettes in its section. I'm not sure if that'll be the case with Sleeping Beauty, though. Ratatouille was only a single disc, so it made sense that the bulk of its features would be under Cine Explore. With SB, it's a 2-disc set, so I'm really wondering what they could possibly add that doesn't rehash the second disc's contents (outside of extra artwork, docent audio, and maybe the 1951 story outline).

I'm probably getting the DVD. I was kicking around the idea of getting the Blu Ray, but seeing as the only way I'll have one any time soon is if my boyfriend springs for one, it doesn't seem likely that it's something I'd be able to use in the next year or so. I'll probably wait to read more reviews on the DVD to decide if I'll get it or not.
At this point, I've pretty much decided that I'll upgrade to Blu Ray when "Star Wars" comes out. I have a feeling that will be a while.

Sleeping Beauty: Platinum Edition
I hope Colin Jacobsin got it wrong, and all the stills from the old DVD made it to the PE, with some new ones. It's very possible he's wrong.
I think if you really care about bonus features you would buy every release that has new ones that aren't just games. But anyway, I'm not one of those people who just collect every Disney movie. I just get the ones that I like, I appreciate, or think are really signifigant. Even then, mostly just the ones I like. Maybe if I had a lot of money I would get all the classics or all the Platinums, but I doubt it.
So anyway, I think it's just a huge duh to get multiple versions of your top favorite films. I mean, then you get lots and lots of what you like, and what on earth is wrong with buying what you like?
So I'll keep buying multiple versions of Sleeping Beauty for sure. Even the multiple cover art is worth it. Okay, well...it would have to be at least a little more than cover art but, but it doesn't take much for me.
And I don't understand why you wouldn't want the best presentation of the movie. Even little changes in making the picture better are worth it to me.

I would look forward to get it by next week. But I would love to see this one. The 2003 DVD that I've mentioned about two years ago that I posted that it was out of print according to an old thread since I started.
I was browsing in several stores like FYE, BEst Buy, Target and other that still has the 2003 "Special Edition", but now the Platinum Edition is going to be back in print once again!
As I said on an earlier post that if you see these Walt Disney Pictures logo that I posted, the 2003 DVD had the blue logo, the Platinum Edition will still have the newer logo like the one on the "101 Dalmatians" Platinum Edition. Here is a link to a preview of what the opening would look like for next week's "Sleeping Beauty" Platinum Edition DVD. I used the opening credits from a 1985 VHS tape courtesy of YouTube user "videos4everybody".

And here is the opening of the same film, but it usually does have the Walt Disney Pictures blue logo. This one came from the 2003 "Special Edition" DVD as well as the 1997 VHS "Masterpiece" edition.

Re: Sleeping Beauty: Platinum Edition
Given that only about 1/3 of his review is newly-written, that the fact that he simply copied his audio commentary section without checking the PE to see it's the same (or, at least not making a note that he checked the PE and found it was the same, if that is the case), it's safe to say that he's wrong about quite a few things in his review.Mike wrote:I hope Colin Jacobsin got it wrong, and all the stills from the old DVD made it to the PE, with some new ones. The Rocketeer is quite significant in Disney history as it's my favorite live-action film in their canon. Thus, you must buy it.Mike wrote:But anyway, I'm not one of those people who just collect every Disney movie. I just get the ones that I like, I appreciate, or think are really signifigant.

If you know a good place where I can buy rain, do tell!Mike wrote:what on earth is wrong with buying what you like?
Hmm, I wonder...
(Scaps walks into the Weather Store and looks around. An employee comes up.)
Employee: Hi, can I help you?
Scaps: What aisle is your rain in?
Employee: Depends on what type of rain you want.
Scaps: Singing Rain.
Employee: You're in luck, we have a sale on Singing Rain today. The twenty-minute packages are buy-two-get-one-free. They're in Aisle 52.
Scaps: Wow, thanks!
Employee: No problem.
(Scaps goes over to Aisle 52 and grabs three packages of the Singing Rain, then heads over to check-out. While waiting in line, he notices that there's travel-size packets of Arizona Morning Sun: December Edition for only $3.88, so he gets a few of those as well. He pays for his weather and then leaves.)
