All of this whining about 'no commentary' or 'only on the single-disc' or what ever is driving me up a wall. Who the heck listens to the commentaries 100% of the way through a movie anyway?
I, for one, have never found any interesting commentaries that were nothing more than pure boredom and something to help me get to sleep with, except for the commentaries on "A Fistful of Dollars", "A Few Dollars More", and "Duck You Sucker"................more movie studios need to have commentaries that are that insightful and that easy to listen to.
Sure having a commentary track is cool if you want to learn how they did a particular shot or scene, or how they worked around obstacles, but to sit and listen to two or three people talk about the high price of tea in China, or who fell in the water during take three, or whatever, that is something that I find the least interesting.
And most of you are paying attention to critics again. Can't we all be our own critic. When the movie comes to DVD this Tuesday (December 4th) then we can watch it and decide whether it was worth the $25 dollars we spent to get the extra disc, or the 'doll', or whatever. I just want to get the movie to complete the trilogy. They have done a wonderful job so far, and I haven't been disappointed in the least.
Heck I may even "double-dip" and get all of these in Blu-Ray after Christmas, depending on whether Santa Claus doesn't bring them to me.

Huh?? Obviously, people do or it wouldn't be such a common DVD feature. Lots of movie lovers find commentaries interesting. Comments such as "get a life" are uncalled for and also, well, stupid.
dvdjunkie wrote:Who the heck listens to the commentaries 100% of the way through a movie anyway.
The people who are recording the commentaries are listening to them all the way through...what with them recording it all the way through.
dvdjunkie wrote:If you are one of those, you need to get a life.
I guess the whole "no personal attacks" rule doesn't apply to Bill.

Rent a few Criterion DVDs and you'll find plenty of insightful commentaries.
Also, pretty much ANY commentary from Rudy Behlmer, Peter Bogdanovich, or Martin Scorsese, are sure to be great listens, IMO. Behlmer has provided several standout commentaries on classic films like Frankenstein, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, and Laura. And Bogdanovich and Scorsese are like walking film encyclopedias, with very analytical and educational commentaries. But I wouldn't recommend Bogdanovich's Bringing Up Baby commentary. Half of it is good stuff (based on his interviews with director Howard Hawks), but the other half is pretty much, "hehe, I love this scene!" or "ha! that's a running joke in my family..."
And of course, the commentary I recommend to just about everyone is Katherine Orrison's for The Ten Commandments. It filled to the brim with great production stories and behind the scenes facts, along with an intimate recollection of how the film has impacted viewers over the years. Worth listening to several times over, and one of the few commentaries I listen to more than once.

Funny how you say that people who listen to commentaries 100% of the way through a movie "need to get a life", then turn around, and admit that you have listened to them. So, perhaps you "need to get a life".
I am so tired of you berating people for discussing things about DVD releases that bother them. As if we are supposed to just buy it, and be happy when things aren't included, or something could be improved, or whatever. You do it all the time. If we want to discuss these things, we have EVERY SINGLE right! It doesn't mean that we don't enjoy our purchases. You need to quit telling people what to think, what to do, and what to feel about things. We are more than capable of doing that ourselves, thank you very much.
Well, my order shipped today. 2 of the 3 items shipped (POTC: AWE LE & Superbad). My bonus disc is not listed os out of stock but it is also not listed as shipped. I'm HOPING that it will be shipped separately but if BB screws me over again I'll flip. If I have to I'll file another claim with the better business bureau as I did the 2 previous times they shorted me. Each time they sent me a $10 Gift Card but I wanted the DISC! I especially want this disc. I've emailed them to ask what the bonus disc's status is but their customer service is designed to give you the run around until it is out of stock & then say they can't send one because they're out. I sure wish we had a BB locally. Their dot com leaves a lot to be desired.
Bonus disc is now listed as backordered (while still listed as a preorder).

can anyone who got the Bonus Disc @ Best Buy tell me what comes on it? It said like 43 minutes of extra stuff? I'm trying to decide between Target (free movie cash for National Treasure 2) and Best Buy (if I buy it before 11 AM I get double Reward Zone Points). Best Buy is $2 cheaper, too. But cash for National Treasure 2 would be nice, too.
Disney Channel died when they stopped airing movies with Haley mills (Parent Trap and Pollyanna) and fun adventure movies like Swiss Family Robinson. R.I.P. the REAL Disney Channel. Date of Death: When the shows became teenie bopperish.
Pirates of the salt flats
The return of the dutchman
Acting below the surface
Destroying the endeavor
From wax to Will: Orlando & Madame Tussauds
World's end/World premieres
Pretty self-explanatory as to what those are, I've watched bits and what I've seen I've liked. Not sure if any of it is redundant, although it shouldn't be.
not sure if this is in the one disc but its in the 2-disc and Blu Ray 2-disc.. in the flyer/booklet that comes with it

A sort of easter egg I guess on the Blu bonus disc (not sure about dvd). From the main menu cursor left and a white crab is there, hit enter and a salt flats crabs screensaver plays.
Scapsta's Quick Assessment of the DVD: The Great - The BestBuy disc is wonderful. Four solid featurettes about the film, one solid featurette about Orly as a wax figure, and some now-obligatory-but-still-enjoyable premiere footage. Had these featurettes been included in the regular release, it would have improved it greatly and would have balanced the amount of the meat-and-potatoes versus the puff pastries. Among the bonuses in the regular two-disc, "Anatomy of a Scene" and "Masters of Design" easily stand out as the best.
The Good - I enjoyed the menu animation on the first disc, though it could have utilized the circular map theme better. The second disc's menus were uniquely animated as well, but a bit standard. Let's just be grateful none of the POTC films have been subjected to EasyFind icons. The Hans Zimmer featurette is well done, and holds up to a few repeat viewings, but I would have loved to see/hear more about the various themes composed instead of fleeting remarks. Likewise, "Hoist the Colors" is a nice brisk featurette, my only suggestion for improvement could be to provide longer footage of a recording session for the song as we only get a brief outtake by a chorus; I would have loved to watched one entire take. The easter eggs were fairly easy to find, but the one about Salt Flats repeats some material from the BestBuy featurette.
The Bad - "Tale of the Many Jacks" was okay, but too much of puff pastry overview rather than a "here's how we did it". It could have been longer and more in vein with an "Anatomy of a Scene" type of feature. "The World of Chow Yun-Fat" and "Bloopers of the Caribbean" are puff pastries worth one viewing. And I was bored to tears with "Keith and the Captain" and the two deleted scenes. The former was too much praise and the latter feels like a pity bonus (thrown in likely after complaints on DMC's lack of deleted scenes, but they're two small scenes that aren't really worth it after all). "Inside the Brethren Court" could have easily been the third film's answer to the interactive features like "Below Deck" (COTBP) and "Captain Jack: From Head to Toe" (DMC). But it...wasn't. Which is unfortunate.
The Ugly - where to start? What about what's lacking? Things like commentaries, trailers, "fly on the set" featurettes, production diaries (like Bruckheimer's natural "producer's photo diary"), additional deleted scenes, and image galleries. Not to mention there's really no cohesive making-of documentary like the previous two films. And what else is ugly in this release? That godawful #3 on the spine, just like the godawful #2 on DMC's. Also, might as well complain about the Movie Rewards logo, which stands out really badly on the otherwise nice cover art. As for what's ugly in the bonuses, there's simply not enough. I know, I know, we should be grateful to be getting any at all, especially with Disney's treatment towards DVD as of late. But the bar was set pretty high with COTBP's DVD, almost met in DMC, and is too far out of reach with AWE.
The Really Ugly - Either I got a bad movie disc or our cheap Koss DVD player in the family room needs to be replaced. I'm praying it's the latter as I hate going through the motions of the Disc Replacement Program. As for what's wrong, I watched the movie only once, and found that it pauses at the layer change, as well as a few times throughout the second half of the film (notable during a couple scenes with the Brethren Court, a couple times during the maelstrom, and when the Armada retreats). I tried it on my portable DVD player and there was no pauses at all, but then I tried it on my brother's DVD player, and a few of the pauses were apparent.
Overall:
The BestBuy Disc - 9.5/10
Anatomy of a Scene: The Maelstrom - 9.25/10
Masters of Design - 9/10
Pirate Maestro: The Music of Hans Zimmer - 8.5/10
Hoist the Colors - 7.75/10
Easter Eggs - 6/10
The Tale of Many Jacks - 5.5/10
The World of Chow Yun-Fat - 4.75/10
Deleted Scenes - 4.5/10
Keith and the Captain - 3.5/10
Inside the Brethren Court - 3/10
Bloopers of the Caribbean - 3/10

i got the region 3 dvd todai..then i noticed something weird on the cover..the pirates logo sports a slightly different font than the official pirates..its similar but different..i check my DMC dvd and it also uses the different one..why r they doing this????i should complaint to the distributor but i should expect nothing from stupid asian corporate companies.
i was somewhat disappointed by the bonus features...ive always enjoyed the fly on the set features on movie 1 and 2...i hate features that r not seamlessly integrated..ala mulan dvd. what i liked about the first two dvds r its not all publicity related but more into the visions of gore and fellow crew.it is one of the most in depth and sincere look into the making of this epic saga.i wouldve liked to see how they do the crab effects and several others...okay so they dont need to touch on davey jones anymore since its covered in movie 2. but the maelstrom making couldve been longer and how they did the giant calypso sequence..
luckily the pirates book covered this.but its not enough reading and looking at pictures
btw, does anyone here read the jack sparrow novel? i've read until novel 8 and i think...we r finally going to be introduced to the origin of beckett and sparrow affair.it is so intriguing...altho the novel can be bit draggy and boring at times.
as for commentaries...granted some of them r boring..i hardly listen to the POTC ones...but i enjoy the bambi story meeting, dumbo's and especially pocahontas one.
