mattting

Post by drsd2kill »
Thanks for the review. The choice of aspect ratio is incredibly disappointing. I can't believe it myself, but I'm on ebay right now looking for the LE version instead. A decent argument was made for altering Robin Hood's aspect ratio (although I don't agree), but I don't see too much if any reason for this new change.

Can anyone suggest a reason not to now get the Limited Edition instead (other than superior coloring)?
I can't understand why the proper matted aspect ratio is a problem for you. The original pressbook advises a matted ratio of 1.75:1, and it was framed to be matted. Also, more lines of resolution are being used on the actual picture with it being anamorphic, and this will matter when you have a 16x9 widescreen HDTV like we will all eventually have to have (if you don't already).

I posted comparisons pics in a seperate thread. Feel free to make comments there.

Yup- I tried and lost, too.

Bobby picked me it up at Best Buy, with the King Louie plush. My Louie does not have a mohawk...I'm sure I could stick his hair straight up like in the picture that was posted, but it's not liek that right now.

Did everyone's copy come with a $3 "Meet the Robinsons" coupon, or was that just at a certain store? Because mine didn't (as far as I could see).

Picked my copy up today at Best Buy with the Baloo plush, and I didn't get a coupon.

I think the $3 coupon was advertised at Target.

I entered my code at Disney Movie Rewards as well, and I lost the game too. I just got done watching the movie, it was really cute. I liked the film more than I had remembered, and though it is still not one of my favorites, it is a good film. I was really happy with the "Bare Necessities: The Making of the Jungle Book" segment. The "making of" segment on Peter Pan was pathetic, so I was really pleased to have a good one for this release. And, as always, I really loved the DisneyPedia segment. I'm really glad to have this film in my Disney DVD collection -- now I am eagerly anticipating the release of 101 Dalmatians!! :)

If you look on the "Peter Pan" PE slipcover, it mentions how it's in its original theatrical aspect ratio. The slipcover for "The Jungle Book" just mentions what aspect ratio it's in (it doesn't mention anything about it being the original theatrical aspect ratio). I just thought that that was interesting...

I got my Edition @ Walmart. At Walmart you get a Exclusive Music CD with 11 songs and 2 Bonus Music Videos on it. Lucky I bought the Jungle Book Read along and I can enjoy the videos on DVD format. Not like they are worth wild videos but I always like a complete collection. :)
(Wish they would have done that with Part Of Your World!!!! GRRRR)
I am happy with my purchase since I am a huge fan of renditions and Disney music! The CD is actually cute and it is not the original artists from the film, it is from an artist named Craig Toungate which I have no clue who he is  but he does a nice job and he has other people on the CD as well. :)

Isn't it like the other instant win games where you can play once a day? We can all try tomorrow if that's the case!

And, I'd love to win a year's supply of bananas...or the animal crackers. Or the other food item I think they offer but can't think of.

I had posted this in the wrong thread:

Out of curiosity and to help me decide myself, I'd love to know how many folks here who own the original release of Disney's Jungle Book will pass it on to someone else now that they have the 2-disc Platinum Edition. With the issues about the aspect ratio, I'm wondering how many folks would think it's worth keeping, and how many will take advantage of the opportunity to save space by getting rid of the old one, which many likely won't watch anymore anyway because it's not the restored version. Just wondering. I just bought my Platinum Edition at Best Buy and got my niece the King Louie plush.

Oh, and I used the new points to get "The Bluegrass Special" from Disney Movie Rewards! Yay!

Because Disney was too flipping lazy to include The Jungle Book's trailer, our very own drsd2kill (aka the guy who posts comparisons of Disney restorations) put up the original theatrical trailer on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20geRJ7oMzk

He got this from the laserdisc version, which makes it even more baffling why Disney didn't port it over to DVD like they did with the Frank and Ollie featurette.

Anyway, no one yet has offered their opinions on the set as a whole, so I guess I'll be the first. I was very satisfied by this edition (lack of trailer aside). The supplements weren't exhaustive, but they were definitely informative and entertaining without being a praise-fest (Lion King, anyone?). The Rocky the Rhino featurette in particular was fascinating, as was the one on Disney's Kipling. In regards to the latter, that's something I'd like to see more of in other Disney DVDs: comparisons to the original source material. I haven't listened to the commentary, yet, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it. Here's how I rank this set with the other Platinums:

1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
2. Aladdin
3. Beauty and the Beast
4. Cinderella
5. The Jungle Book
6. The Little Mermaid
7. Bambi
8. The Lion King
9. Lady and the Tramp
10. Peter Pan

For me, Jungle Book and Little Mermaid's supplements are about equal to each other, but since Jungle Book's documentary was more focused, I ranked it above Mermaid (Mermaid's documentary was good, but spent too much time discussing the studio changes and management rather than the film's actual production). I still can't get over how weak Peter Pan's disc is, but I'll deal with it.

Oh, and let me say that I think the matted ratio worked fine. Sometimes it did look a little cramped at the top, but this was rare, and I attribute it more to my TV's overscan than the matting. I'll have another look at the film on my laptop to get a better judgment. The restoration itself was gorgeous, and I was shocked at clear the soundtrack was considering the film's age. Lowry is getting kind of unpredictable, though. They seem to have abandoned the idea of posting end credits, and for some reason, they used the abbreviated Walt Disney Pictures logo that usually goes over the old RKO portions, yet this was a Buena Vista film.

Nice ranking DisneyKid, mine would probably look fairly similar, though I think I would put The Lion King a little bit higher. Though it is very scattered and confusing in parts, there is a lot of great material there. Also, it is one of my favorite Disney films, so I really enjoy the Platinum version, as well as all of the bonus features.

ohh and another little bonus I forgot to mention on The Jungle Book Read AlongDVD, there is a 4:05 Interview with the Sherman Brothers about the music of The Jungle Book. :)
You don't actually see them though, you only hear them talk and they are talking behind some nice art gallery work, live action and animated. :)

Are there any Easter Eggs on the discs? I haven't had a chance to get a turn at the TV yet and explore my discs, and I want to do it on the bigger TV. I was just wondering if maybe the trailer was hiding as an Easter Egg, because that's a ridiculous thing to leave off of a DVD that's loaded with extras, though I know it happens a lot with other DVDs.

I have not had a chance to completely go though the DVD yet, but I have checked out a few scenes... The aspect ratio is odd. I understand its 1.75:1 and that was the original theatrical ratio, but some scenes feel cramped. I'm all for preserving the original aspect ratios, etc... but it would have been nice to see the open matted version (or Fullscreen) on the set somewhere. Maybe its just where I've watched that version for over 20 years. Anyway the ratio isn't that bad, and the restoration is good.

Feels like a pretty good set, and I can't wait to get through all of it later.

I think I actually disagree with quite a few of you guys...but hey we're all entitled to our own opinions, right?

I actually prefer the Jungle Book in 1.75:1. I think the restoration of the film is easily the best restoration on any Disney film up until this point.

I also think that for once I actually REALLY enjoyed the 5.1 remix. I did not find it be a one-trick track like the remixed Lion King, and I also thought it much better than the worst Disney mix...Mary Poppins which came from the same era as Jungle Book. Listening to the music in Stereo (which is how it was recorded) was a breath of fresh air, and it was mixed subtly into the rears as well. The center channel dialogue was cleaned up, and the Subwoofer was used sparingly to dish out bass during music and thunder cues. All in all this is my favorite film presentation of any platinum edition. As someone who owns an HDTV and an upconverting HD-DVD player with a full 7.1 surround setup, I think I am qualified to make these observations, though I don't expect everyone to agree with me.

My main hangup with the DVD is one that Luke mentioned in his review.
We've gotten Fullscreen & Widescreen versions before on discs like Lady and the Tramp and Sleeping Beauty. I too am dissapointed that the fullscreen transfer is not preserved here.

Though I do have to wonder...what if Lowry Digital only restored the 1.75 negative. That would mean that the 1.33:1 version has not been properly restored. I wonder how the Disney artists would feel about that!

Anyways, I'm happy with the disc!

Well, it looks like there is some sort of problem with this release. Whether it is from the actual print, itself, or, a problem with the DVD, I don't know.

A post at the DVDTalk.com forums describes this issue:

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showpost.php?p ... stcount=46

"I'm definitely not watching in 480i. I've got an upconverting DVD player via an HDMI input on my TV, and I've never noticed anything like this on any movie before. Not to mention that it's not always there during the movie. It really comes and goes, often within a scene on the exact same color of background. Just to check, I put the disc in my computer DVD-ROM drive and it is noticeable there too, though not as noticeable as when it is blown up to a much bigger size on my TV. I took a couple of quick snapshots of my TV screen with a digital camera to show what I mean. It happens at various times throughout the movie. And when the lines aren't there (like I mentioned before, the mostly happen on big patches of grays and browns) it looks absolutely beautiful.

These are from right around the 43:30 mark where they're talking and realize that it isn't night anymore."

I put this into my notebook, which has a hi-def display, and I checked the time the poster mentions, and, sure enough, it shows up on my copy. Anyone here at UD notice this? I haven't watched it on my television set, yet, but, it's definitely there.

Can anyone determine if this is an issue with the actual print, or, something else?
