Well, I've been reading these Gargoyles comics and must say that they are alright. I haven't seen any earth shattering villains, or cataclysmic mythology changing story arcs.......but these comics have only been out for 5 issues! I have great hopes for this comic series (since I'm such a HHhhhuuuuuuuuge Gargoyles fan!!!!). I went to a comic book store today to pick up the latest issue, and found a 1st issue release of Disney's Gargoyles comic released by Marvel. I was so excited I snatched that up right away.
I was wondering if anyone else has read this. On the last page of this issue, there was an announcement that there will be a black and white Gargoyles miniseries released this fall, and this winter a trade paperback will be released with the first six issues included.
I am extremely interested in the Pendragon storyline and hope that Greg explores that story arc. I'm not too excited about Time Dancer....or Bad Guys for that matter. For the first time in over 10 years, though, the official Gargoyles 'canon' has expanded.

I have managed to get a few of these. I have the number ones of each book and I have 2 and 3 of Haunted Mansion as well. I don't recall if I have anymore of the other titles, but I've been most pleased with Haunted Mansion. I do want to catch up with the others though. Unfortunately, my comic shop doesn't seem to have the back issues I'd need. As for the other titles, I always found Tron a bit odd, but I'm interested enough to get more. I love Wonderland stuff, though I'd be more into it if Alice WAS there, but I do want to get more of them too. Love Gargoyles as well, and I hope things like this convince Disney to release the rest of the show and the follow-up show onto DVD. I do have several of the old Marvel Gargoyle comic. Don't think I got the last few, but I have the first ones. I have collected Disney comics all my life. They're some of the best comics out there, really. However, I'm more into the Uncle Scrooge type stuff.

Wow, I didn't realize the initial post in the topic was months old and the comics are now published and available or purchase!
http://store.slavelabor.com/product-exe ... nderland_1
I did a google search and found the publishers and pages to buy the comics. Anyhow, I saw the covers for the Wonderland comic and there was a little girl featured who was dressed like Alice, but with dark hair. I was confused because they said this comic took place AFTER Alice left Wonderland. The description said she was Mary Ann, the other human resident of Wonderland. It took me a few seconds to realize that this is the girl the White Rabbit thinks that Alice is when she's at his house. That's sooooooooo cool!! I never thought Mary Ann could be human when the White Rabbit kept calling for her. I really want to read the comics now and find out more about this mentioned character from the movie. I don't know if she was in the books though...

The new Gargoyles comic is mind-blowing! As I predicted, they are able to get away with a lot more in the comic than the TV show, like a little bit of cursing and some more blood.
This is the cover art for #5. We are into BRAND NEW stories now. So its great to see the series continuing, as it always should have. And Greg Weisman (writer/creator) is able to spread his wings a bit more in the comic books.

I have all the Marvel Gargoyles comics. The art and stories weren't too bad. I especially loved Lavelle (sp?) and Venus. But the comics weren't canon. And some of it was a bit over the top....like the egg worshipping ninjas.....??? But I have seen worse.disneyfella wrote:Well, I've been reading these Gargoyles comics and must say that they are alright. And the miniseries that was announced is called Bad Guys. It will focus on a group of Gargoyles' villians are are kinda a Redemption Squad. Matrix (nanotech hive-mind), Hunter (Robyn Canmore), Dingo (former Pack member), Fang (mutate), and Yama (Japanese gargoyle).
This is the cover for the new Bad Guys series.

Gargoyles has been out for 5 issues and in the back of the last one Greg said that 1-6 would be collected (later this year I think). It is a fantastic book. All Elisa needs to do now is dress as Ariel and she's covered the 3 modern princesses!
Gargoyles is a nightmare to get in the UK. I got issue 1, had to order 2+3 from SLG, managed to pick up 4+5 in the US (though I could only get 4 for like $8, but the saving on postage to the UK made it worth it). I need to see if SLG will do some sort of subscription to Gargoyles, it's spin-offs, Wonderland and Haunted Mansion (my girlfriend gets those and they're good) and post the issues out like once every quater (monthly postage would cost too much)

I'm pretty sure SLG does have a subscription thing for Gargoyles. I kind of remember reading about it on their site.
I don't want to get off topic here, but I'm going to mention the DC universe for comparison with the Gargoyles series.
Now, I'm not claiming to be the biggest Gargoyles fan out there but I totally love all things Gargoyles. So I was so excited about these new comics FINALLY being able to continue the storyline. However, I must say that if I were NOT a Gargoyles fan these comics ..... would be kind of mediocre. The reason I'm bringing up DC is that I have NOT totally been up with that whole universe, but recently I picked up Sinestro Corps. (it had TONS of buzz at Comic Con) and feel like even as an outsider that was a great comic (completely visceral..you know?...I was feeling something while reading it!!). I don't think that an outsider would appreciate the story going into the new Gargoyles comic if they weren't already a Gargoyles fan. I think the fanbase has been wanting this for so long (myself included), that the story could be total crap and we'd still be at least happy.
I'm not saying that these comics are bad, I'm just thinking that they might not be going for a broad audience, and therefore may not be super successful (which has always been the downfall for Gargoyles merchandise).
I was wondering what others thought. If you haven't been a fan of Gargoyles, are you interested in these new comics? It seems like a pointless question, but I think the comics should be so open as to draw a new crowd into the gargoyles universe. Maybe I'm way off base here.

I used to have some Disney comics when I was little, but I haven't read any in many years. I'm not a big comic book fan. But, the Wonderland & Haunted Mansion comics sound very interesting. I don't dislike "Gargoyles" or "Tron", but I'm not as interested in them.
I think, with all the different villains and other characters, it could be confusing for someone who isn't too familiar with the "Gargoyles" world to read the comics. It was always my least favorite Disney Afternoon show, mostly because I was a little girl.
Should a person read the DC comics first, and then pick up the SLG comics of "Gargoyles", or are they not in any sort of order?

DC didn't do the old Gargoyles comics, MARVEL did.
However, I think SLG and Disney both seem to think that the comics are doing well. They already are deffinetly making a spin-off series, Bad Guys. With Timedancer (Brooklyn's own spin-off) and Pendragon (King Arthur, Griff, and Macbeth) in serious talks. So regardless of the fact that these comics have proven difficult to get out to the public, the draw has been big enough to produce spin-offs.
Also, I was a 16 year old girl when Gargoyles came out. Loved it. Its not really a boys-only show like Transformers or Batman was. There are female characters, strong female characters that don't make the girls off into the princess that needs saving. Women in Gargoyles have power and aren't afraid to use it.
Also, I will say again the MARVEL comics aren't canon. They were never canon. Just like The Goliath Chronicles weren't canon So fans shouldn't confuse the two because the Marvel comics were something done outside of the intended Gargoyles universe. The first comic kinda explains that as its a revision (the original version) of The Journey, that was The Goliath Chronicles first episode.
SLG Gargoyles #1 takes up where Hunter's Moon Part 3 left off. Marvel comics and The Goliath Chronicles are not canon and technically in the Gargoyles Universe, NEVER happened. Consider Marvel and The Goliath Chronicles to be showboat fan fiction.
The first couple of comics in the SLG series have been just a recap of The Journey. Somethings The Journey episode had, were what Greg Weisman (creator/writer) originally came up with and they used, but other ideas they scrapped. So he was able to use and reuse for the first few comics. It gives a quick recap of what the series was about. Without having you spend 5 pages learning everything. And the comic also lists website resources to read up on and mentions the DVDs, so new fans can find a way to know the full history.
This afterall, isn't the only time a TV series have continued in comic book form. Buffy: The Vampire Slayer is in Season 8 as a comic book. Just like with Gargoyles, the major buyers for Buffy, will be Buffy fans. And apparently there are enough Gargoyles fans out there buying to have them written the scripts up to #12, put out a spin-off, and in talks about two more spin-offs.
SLG Gargoyles comic..
Explosively successful? Perhaps not. Successful? Deffinetly.

I cannot wait for a Pendragon spin off!!! I think that story is soo cool. Unfortuantely, the only Gargoyles in that spin off are Gryff...(who isn't like a main gargoyle or anything). I just really think that is an untapped story full of places to go.
I think the big difference between the Gargoyles and Buffy comics too, though, is there availability. You can find the Buffy comics all over the place, and therefore you can expose more people to the world/story. However, as evidenced just by the postings here,........you CANNOT find the Gargoyles comcis without serisouly searching for them. How do you expect to expand/grow your audience?
I know word of mouth will totally help, but I feel like only us Gargoyles fans will have access to this. Maybe that is enough (Hopefully that is enough!), but I just don't know how long it can last that way.

I wouldn't blame Disney or SLG for the difficulty in availability. Most comic book stores carry the mainstays. DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, Image, etc. SLG is still seen as a small comic book company. Hence why many don't readily stock it. Hopefully as the comic book stores hear people are going online to buy it and not visiting their stores, they may rethink that and start stocking it. Best way to make it available at your local comic book shops....harass the hell out of them. Everytime they release it, call and ask. Ask before the comic comes out if they are getting it. Ask the day its released. Ask a week later if they got it. If you have friends locally who like Gargoyles too, get them to call as well. If they KNOW there is a market for it, they will carry it. The problem is, a lot of them don't know.
