Me Myself I (1999) - wonderfully feel-good supernatural-themed romantic comedy. The humor was more than a little off for me. But the acting, story, and direction (apart from the humor) are really top-notch. A-

Drowning Mona (2000) - this was a lot better than I remember it. I had a blast watching this again. But then, I'm obsessed with murder-comedies. Some pretty good quotes, and perfect acting. The cop humor is really off, the two deputies are too goofy to be funny, and Feege was a weak character. And of course, Will Ferrell doesn't belong in any film attempting to call itself a "comedy" (and you know I'm looking at you, Zoolander). But these only affect the movie for maybe 2 minutes per person. It's still worth watching for the hickville-y humor. "Ellie says you've been having some concerns, regarding the business." "It just hasn't been the same since Jeph killed Peaches." "Jeph killed Peaches? The Schneider dog? I heard it was the other way around." "Peaches killed Jeph?" Best moment in the movie. B+

Pre-Screenings:

Sunshine- Awesome! Not that many good sci-fi movies out there anymore.

Charlie Bartlett- Funny little independant (I think) movie. If it plays anywhere near you, you should definitely go watch it!

And I saw for the very first time in my life:

Gone With the Wind- Wow. A four hour long movie, but worth every second. I LOOOOVE Scarlett O'Hara!

Seriously? You had never seen GwtW before??!! I am glad you liked it so much, for me it is THE best movie ever made, despite being almost 70 years old.

Dead Silence [UNCUT]

Well, I knew I wanted to see this ever since I saw its cracking little trailer. (Although it could just have been a cracking trailer, I'm not sure the average length of trailers these days. Not that I can check how long the Dead Silence trailer is BECAUSE UNIVERSAL HAVE NOT INCLUDED IT ON THE DISC - but I digress).

Anyhow, the somewhat poor reviews and lack of box office success never turned me off the film and as I settled down to watch it, I knew from the old style late 30's "Plane around the globe" Universal opening logo I would love it. And love it I did.

It's a little NightmareOnElmStreety – but to label it as a NoES rip-off like some have done is a little unfair. Considering NoES was all about dreams, ironically I think Dead Silence contains more imagination for example. It certainly has enough aspects of its own to be considered unique in my opinion.

When all is said and done, it is preposterously silly. If you just stop and think about it, it makes little sense. But it doesn't really matter, because the film is all about atmosphere. And this film has it in spades. It does actually take a lot to actually scare me. Scare, as in emotionally get to me rather than an odd little heart flutter when a cat leaps out unexpectedly for example, and this film certainly creeped me. But I've always had a thing about ventriloquist dummies ever since "Magic".

Towards the end, it actually turned into a bit of an unwelcome CGI-fest (although to be fair it wasn't as overplayed as some films are), but this disappointed me more than it would normally because the film had done so well creating creeps and chills just with animated dummies, shadows, disembodied voices and even slow motion. The CGI (although I expect it they were the most expensive shots in the film) ended up looking the cheapest.

There's a teriffic twist at the end too – way on par with M. Night Shyamalan's (until he his writing became a pretentious parody of itself with "The Village") and I don't think anyone will guess it – but like all true twists, it doesn't cheat and appears to be obvious once you know it.

In a year when most of the big budget "blockbusters" have disappointed many, it’s a shame a film as entertaining as this didn't do better. I hope many people discover this gem on DVD.

I watched the HD DVD version, which is a solid little disc but simply duplicates the DVD's supplements. I was disappointed that there was no U-Control features (or even a normal commentary). I guess box office takings were worse than even I suspect.

It was a dog day in the Junkie Home Theater as we watched:

Lassie Come Home - the original from 1943 with Elizabeth Taylor and Roddy McDowall.

Courage of Lassie - the original 1946 film that still brings a tear to my eyes.

Old Yeller - the Disney Classic from 1957 that brought us my favorite line from a Disney movie - "He rocked my dog, you can't rock my dog )begins throwing rocks at his brother)". Kevin 'Moochie' Corcoran and Tommy Kirk. Fess Parker and Dorothy McGuire head a great cast in one of the best Disney adventure films ever made.

American Dreamz
Stick It!!

I had seen "American Dreamz" in the theater, and, even though it's not Mandy Moore's best movie, I enjoyed seeing it a second time.
I had never seen "Stick It!", even though I had wanted to since I had first seen it advertised last year. I really, really liked it (enough to get the DVD sometime), but my hubby said he wasted 2 hours of his life watching it. One reason I liked it so much was because gymnastics is my favorite sport to watch.

Watched The Compleat 'Weird Al' Story, the two-hour documentary/biography of musical parodist Alfred Yankovic. Very interesting program includes the use of 8mm home movies shot by his parents from the time he was born until he graduated from High School in Lynwood, California. Also includes some of his best videos including a rarely-seen "My Bologna" video. Interviews with his mother and father, Dr. Demento, Rick Derringer, and his tour manager, and booking agent. Lots of laugh, and lots of great behind the scenes stuff from the fine folks at Scotti Brothers.

Just wondering if this can be moved to polls/games, since what book did you just read is in that section. Both topics have the same premise.

Just watched the awe-inspiring The Lion King. Being that I watched this movie about every day when I was little, I now watch the film once per year in the summer (usually around the time of its theatrical release, but I was late this year) to keep the film "special". As far as the movie, there isn't much I can say. The Lion King is a very personal film for me, believe it or not. Without this film I wouldn't be the person I am today or have been best friends with someone since kindergarden. And no, I'm far from exaggerating. If it wasn't for TLK, I probably wouldn't even be a Disney fan...

Anyway, as far as the DVD, I don't know what made me think that TLK was the worst platinum. It really does have quite a large helping of bonus features. I think what makes this set particularily bad in the eyes of UD'ers and TLK fans is just the confusing layout.

I must also admit, it was really cool watching TLK on a (big, for my family) (I believe) 46" LCD TV, with custom speakers that my dad built to create the whole stereo effect. (He's thinking of building 2 more to be placed behind you for the full stereophonic experience. :D )

Ok, I will stop my ranting as of now. :D

Overall: *****(5 stars), or 9.9/10 (-.1 for the confusing layout of the DVD...) minus the DVD, 10/10.

Why? Sometimes there is a lot of discussion about the movies here, or reviews about new movies, so I think it should stay here.

I saw Shrek 3 and Blades of Glory yesterday on the plane. Both entertaining but not the best movies ever. And I fell asleep during Blades of Glory for like half an hour.

After discussing it a week or so back on Laz's Oldie Horror Movie thread, I decided to watch...

Witchfinder General

again, being as its been a few years since I saw it. Some of the stuff I said on Laz's thread is probably wrong upon reviewing the film.

It is a violent film (and the documentary on the disc states it was one of the most violent films of its time) but most of the violence is somewhat unimpressive these days and occasionally it verges on laughable. (I'm sure that fact says more about today's society than society in the late 60's). But some sequences, especially the end, are still quite shocking. Not because they show gore, but because they accurately depict the anger behind such violent acts.

Also while he is the 'star' Vincent Price has surprisingly little screen time. But his performance is all but flawless, making his presence felt even when not on screen.

It's not a horror film, it's actually a straight up historical movie (although I can state now considerable liberties have been taken with the source material). In the documentary, somebody likens it to an old school western movie, and they're not far wrong.

But it's still a brilliant movie - comparable to the very best of the movies from the 50s and 60s.
