Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Fantastic!!! They made the longest and kida boring book in the series into a great movie that has charm, is exciting, and the final showdown is simply amazing and visually stunning!!!

The more I see of this movie, the more interested I am in it. I'm really looking forward to it now.

My dad and I have been celebrating the return of our however many inch Widescreen LCD TV (my dad says it's 52", I thought it was 62"), so tonight he picked out one of his favorite movies: Zeppelin, starring Michael York and Elke Sommer. It takes place close to the start of WWI and takes place almost entirely on a German zeppelin. It was pretty good, and for a film made in 1971, the effect were very well done.

Finally saw Def by Temptation... And, all I have to say is... "what happened?" It's honestly one of the most confusing movies I've ever seen in my life. I have no clue what it was about. Or even what was going on half the time. But, though it's certainly experimental, it's also got some very good moments. Worth checking out if you like the sort of "what you see isn't always what you get" brand of horror. I give it a B-

Dead Silence (2007). I had some high hopes for this film since it had the same writer and director of Saw (one of my fav horror movies). Unfortunately, it was a slight disappointment. The first 15 minutes started off really great but then the story began to fall apart. Not to mention I figured out the ending before it was over. Too bad.

That lead guy Ryan Kwanten is super hot though.

Final grade: C

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in IMAX 3-D at Universal Studios Hollywood City Walk! It was nothing short of incredible! The IMAX screen is ridiculously huge, the picture and sound were like nothing I've ever seen or heard, and the film itself was just fantastic! The next time I watch a movie at home or at a local theater, I will be outrageously disappointed, to say the least.

After watching that amazing film, my friends and I had dinner at Bubba Gump's, which was an extremely fun experience. I swear, if I was ever in a movie and they made a restaurant based on it, I would be so proud I would burst!

Edit: By the way, that was easily the best Harry Potter film so far.

Keeping Mum. A charming British dark comedy starring Rowan Atkinson, Kristen Scott Thomas and the always wonderful Maggie Smith.

Smith plays a housekeeper with a troubling past who is hired to tend to a rather emotionally distraught family. A father (Atkinson) who is a vicar that seems to be in his own world, a mother (Thomas) who is so desperate for attention that she begins having an affair (with her American golf pro played by Patrick Swayze), a daugther who will sleep with any teenage boy she begins dating and a young son who is having problems with the school bullies. As Smith's character enters the family's lives, things begin to change for the better, but there is something deliciously and hilariously evil and surprising about their new housekeeper.

Filled with a great story, frank humor and realistic family problems, mixed with Smith's amazing knack for deadpan humor, this is definitely worth checking out.

Final grade: B+

I saw Harry Potter Order of The Phoenix well....actually just over half of it. My friend and I were in the theater, and these two "superfans"** were sitting behind us, they had obviously seen the movie before because they not only added their own commentary, but started saying some parts line for line. Of course like other theater idiots, they were kicking out chairs too of course with my back still a tad sore I had had enough

Now, normally I'm not an angry person but this was too much for me, I ended up turning around and said "If either of you says one for word, or kicks my chair again I will shove my drink down your f******* throat". Of course like all idiots, they did it again

My friend and I got up, demanded a refund at the front till and left.

So with all that said, I was disappointed at how slow things went at first, I'll wait until the movie comes out on dvd and give it a better review then. But for now

I finally got around to seeing Ratatouille today and the theatre was really packed! Anyways I thought the movie was pretty good and was a little step up from last year's Cars.

Lucky McKee's The Woods. A monumental disappointment. I honestly thought this guy could do no wrong. May and Sick Girl were so damn good. I especially thought that since McKee's influences for this film were so good - Suspiria, Phenomena (1984), The Evil Dead, Sleepy Hollow (1999), Carrie (1976), The Craft, and to some extent, Picnic at Hanging Rock (which I have yet to see). But the movie honestly stunk some pretty rotten eggs. It was well photographed, sure. But the plot was terrible, the dialogue was cliched, the characters were weak, the CGI was frigid, nothing logically fit, nor was anything interesting. Plus, the speed-editing in certain scenes was cruddy. Though the ending had a few great minutes with some cool gore. And technically, the acting was great. But it was a completely unconnected film. Everything lacked direction. And everything felt cliched, painfully seen-before. D+ It's such a tragedy that I spent $13 on this DVD, considering there isn't a single bonus feature whatsoever.

Finally saw Fright (1971). It wasn't really good, but I quite liked it anyway. Very creepily shot - shaky camera and grossly uncomfortable close-ups, lots of killer-p.o.v. (this is before Halloween and Black Christmas), good score, and good use of location and atmosphere. Just one problem... Susan George as the babysitter, Amanda. She screams too much. In the first 12 minutes (and only her first 3 minutes alone)... she screams bloody murder at...a falling item of linen on a clothesline. She screams so loud, my ears nearly exploded. And she proceeds to do this about 17 more times in the next hour of the movie. It happens another 3 or 4 times when she turns onto a horror movie on TV, only it's a girl in the movie.

Way too loud.

I haven't been keeping up with this thread, but yesterday I saw Hairspray (2007) (I'll post in the appropriate thread soon) and Flickering Lights (2000), a Danish film that took a while to get into but ended up being funny (in a dark way) and wrapping up with a nice ending.
