It is a wonderful film, one of the best Broadway musicals turned to film. Zeta-Jones is definitly the star of the whole production, and would have failed at the BO if she wasn't in it. It's fun, grand, great and swell! I'm so happy that I now have it in my collection to watch all the time.

The Pagemaster, a pretty good movie that combines animation and live-action that takes place in a library and various books.

I actually just saw this one last night. I thought it was one of the best films of the farily weak 2007. Light and fun without becoming syrupy, it's a nice romantic comedy that women of all ages should enjoy - and men should be able to sit through it without groaning every five seconds; in fact, they'll actually be entertained.Loomis wrote:- Waitress (US - 2007)

Yes, a little late, but I've been so busy over the past few months. So very, very busy.
Anyhow, this is what we, in the trade, call a treasure of a movie. A perfect script (just as good as any Pixar script), excellent acting (including some old hand British screen legends) and excellent direction (all the more remarkable considering its budget nature).
Some people call this a spoof or parody. I disagree. Mainly because the parody genre has been soiled by such crap as Date Movie and Scary Movie 4 - which don't as much parody movies but simply repeat with added farting. How clever.
This is a film that does pay homage to various film conventions and cliches - but unlike dross like Date Movie actually enjoys them. It's not saying "look how lame these films are", it's celebrating how good "rogue cop", or "mismatched buddy" or "western" movies really are. It's a film that is simply life-affirming, its so full of playful love and respect to past master filmmakers.
I love it.

Just watched That Thing You Do - Tom Hanks Extended Edition and I love this version of the movie even more. Lots of great scenes - over 10 minutes worth - added to the movie, and it makes the story more complete. Great actors, great story, and great music, make this one of my favorite movies of this or any year. The Wonders rule!!

Went to see Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer last night. After a painful first 20 minutes or so, with far too many jokey and twee moments - what is it with dance sequences in superhero movies this year? - the film really picks up pace and goes into a fun romp.
To be honest, despite being a comic reader for quite a few years, the "Fantastic Four" was just not a book I followed. So I have no idea whether this was faithful to the history of the characters (one hardcore Silver Surfer fan I know says a few things were changed, but nothing to worry him too much so I'll go along with it). All the characters just about "feel" right in this, and indeed, they did in the first film. While the first film felt a little anti-climactic, this builds up into a crescendo of special effects wizardry.
One major bone of contention: I didn't think it was possible to make Jessica Alba look unattractive, but the makeup artists on this film proved me dead wrong. What's with the hair? The make-up applicator needs to be taken out and shot.
One of the movies you must see before you die? No. Fun? Absolutely!

Just got back from a matinee of Live Free or Die Hard a while ago. It was a pretty good movie. It's great to see Bruce Willis back as John McClane and the addition of Justin Long was most welcomed. Great action sequences, a little weak on the story but that doesn't really matter too much in this case.
Great performance from Timothy Olyphant as well.
Overall grade: B
