DESPERATE for a finale?
I certainly was ... Season 3 has been such a phenomenal season for Desperate Housewives ... It is certainly on par with Season 1 ... The Season opened 6 months after the 2nd Season finale ... Mike was in a coma ... Bree was engaged ... Gaby and Carlos were divorcing ... Edie was being Edie ... and Lynette was coping with Tom's love child ...
In the DH world ... only 6 months have passed before us in these 23 episodes ... and so much has happened ... a mystery was solved ... many many deaths have occurred ... we got to see Wisteria Lane from the men's perspective ... and Bree vanished for a few eps to finally take that honeymoon ...
Tonight's finale was absolutely perfect (like one of Bree's dinner parties) ... the season ended with a wedding ... well two ... a pregnancy ... well faux pregnancy ... adultery ... and a shocker!
In true DH fashion ... we opened with a wonderful teaser ... that ended with Gaby getting her "something new" and the women gasping as Bree's very preggy belly ...
The ep flashes back a few days and shows Gaby getting ready for the wedding ... Lynette coping with the financial burden of her cancer ... Bree at a hotel overseas getting ready to return to the lane ... Susan planning her nuptials to Mike ... and Edie and Carlos trying to have a baby together ...
Susan wants a big wedding ... and Mike is working overtime to be able to make her dreams come true ... He has turned his plumbing gig into a 24 hour service job to make some extra money to give Susan her fantasy wedding ...
Lynette's estranged mother arrives (with suitcases) [gotta love Polly Bergen] to come and help her deal with the cancer ... Stella smokes ... drinks ... and apparently was quite the sex kitten in the past ... Leaving a young Lynette to take care of her sister ... and when her mother had breast cancer ... Lynette was there to take care of her ... but said that this was her Stella's "punishment" for all her sordid affairs and for pushing her step-father away ...
Bree and Orson return from the honeymoon ... and Julie is the first one to greet them ... She wants to know where Danielle is ... why Danielle hasn't returned her phone calls or emails ... the Hodges have a perfect answer for each question ...
Gaby is preparing for her nuptials ... and meets Victor's father ... daddy has big plans for Victor ... THE GOVERNOR'S HOUSE ... and Gaby doesn't like it at all ... So later on that evening ... Gaby and Victor get into a fight over the governor's race ... and Gaby calls the wedding off ... Victor's father visits Gaby the following morning ... apologizes for his son ... and somehow convinces Gaby to take Victor back ...
Edie has a weird dream involving her deceased mother ... Basically her mom tells her that she will wind up alone ... because Carlos will find out the truth (that she is still on birth control) and he will hate her ... Edie tells her mother that she's only doing that until Carlos falls in love with her ... But Edie's mommy turns out to be right ... Carlos finds Edie's stash of birth control pills ... and breaks up with her at Gaby's wedding ... Edie is completely devastated ...
After the wedding ... Gaby overhears Victor and papa chatting ... it seems that Gaby is just a campaign "asset" to Victor ... they married so he can bring in the Latino vote ... and that she will truly be an asset during the race for governor ... Gaby is heartbroken and torn ... she runs into an inebriated Carlos ... who says that he messed up his life ... because he was truly happy 2 years ago ... and they make love ...
Bree is at home ... writing an email to Julie (pretending to be Danielle) ... Orson helps her up from the bed ... and it is revealed that Bree is faking the pregnancy ... Danielle is in a convent (just a few hours away) ...
Lynette's mother learns of her daughter's near affair ... Stella is also paying for Lynette's medical bills ... and plans on setting roost until Lynette is in the clear ... Stella let's her daughter know that she knows about Rick ... and says that maybe this cancer is her "punishment" ... Stella gives Lynette a choice ... she can either fight her ... or the cancer ... she won't have the strength to fight both ...
Susan surprises Mike ... She sends him away on a fake plumbing job ... only to arrive at the spot where Susan and Julie are ... with a priest ... Susan and Mike marry in the woods ...
But the most shocking moment in tonight's episode ... was when we saw ... a sad and pathetic looking Edie ... she leaves a note to her beloved Carlos ... she grabs a scarf ... stands on a chair ... knocks it over ... and commits suicide ...
The episode was hilarious at some points (the top two funniest scenes were when Gaby kicked the wedding present and Bree saying "OFF THE HOOK") ... really poignant at other points (the 4 housewives holding hands) ... and ended with a scene that was shocking and quite filled with sadness ...
I honestly don't know why they "killed" Edie besides for shock value ... all the other deaths on this show somewhat advanced the plot ... (George ... Alma ... Matthew Applewhite ... even Rex) ... but why Edie?
And damn ... why are they killing everyone? Wisteria Lane is filled with empty homes ... The old Applewhite home ... the Young house ... now Mike's home ... and now Edie's? I guess I will be looking at the prices of homes on Wisteria Lane over the summer ...
So in the new season ... Bree will be faking her pregnancy ... Susan and Mike are married ... Gaby's marriage is going to implode ... and hopefully she will reunite with Carlos ... and Lynette will be battling cancer ... and I will truly miss Edie ...
I predicted this on Thursday night ... you can ask MM1 and I hate that my predication came true ... because Edie will be missed ... and Nicollette certainly deserves an Emmy nomination in the fall ... particularly for her "I'm Edie" monologue ...
This will be one long summer ...

Oh. My. Gosh.
THAT was the most unexpected moment in Desperate Housewives history! As soon as I saw the note she left on the table, I knew what was going on. It's so sad to see what-seemed-to-be such a strong person end up doing such a terrible thing.
After browsing the TV.com forums, people are thinking that Carlos will run in at the last minute and save her, but I'm thinking otherwise, and I think Rowlf's link proves that. I saw Nicolette Sheridan on Regis & Kelly the other day and she said that something crazy was going to happen to Edie on the finale and that the producers called her up before they released the script and asked her if she was willing to do it (of course, she didn't say what "it" was). Personally, I don't see why they would ask for her consent if she was going to survive. It just wouldn't make sense.

Well for me, last night's episode was pretty uneventful. It just didn't seem like the last show of the season. Nothing really juicy happened, there was no big revelations, no cliffhanger and no new mystery introduced for season 4. Plus a really pathetic attempt at ratings with Edie apparently committing suicide (if she really is dead, shame on the writers for letting such a strong vibrant character take a shameful way out all because she got dumped). There was nothing there to make you tune in come September.
While season 3 overall was pretty enjoyable (a lot better than season 2, but still doesn't measure up to the wonderful first season), the writers are going to have to spice things up a bit to make season 4 more watchable.

AHHHHH! EDIE! NOOOOO!
I really hope that Edie isn't dead (anything can happen on this show), as she is such a fun and wonderful character to watch.
And it's so nice and refreshing to see Marcia Cross back, she is such a breath of fresh air to the show (not that it neccesarily needed one, but it was nice to have one provided).
And finally, Susan and Mike get married. Who would have guessed this half way through the season? I mean, considering that after Mike woke up, that he almost seemed to hate Susan, and then after that Ian forbid Susan from even talking to him, it didn't seem like this was ever going to happen. But thank God it did, as it was getting a bit old watching them come close and then be separated again.
Lynette's relationship with her mother will surely be interesting to watch come fall.
Man, Victor is such a jerk! I hope he's one of the ones to die next season.

Since I record all of Desperate Housewives to DVD+R, I have rewatched our Season Three finale two or three times now, and I think we might have it all wrong about who is hanging at the end. It could be Bree's daughter, who is pregnant in the convent, and really doesn't want to be there. If she should die that will upset the whole "pregnancy" thing that Bree and Orson are trying to pull off. Let's not all jump to conclusions that it was Edie, it might have been Bree's daughter...........................hmmmmmmmm, very interesting!!!

I seriously do not know if I am going to bother to watch this next year. The only really classic Desperate Housewives was Bang, and the rest of it just went on and on with various things, hoping something would stick. Furthermore, I was incredibly underwhelmed by last night's episode; even Susan and Mike's wedding felt obligatory instead of significant, and when Edie committed suicide, I didn't feel anything at all. It was like "eh," I shrugged it off and got excited for Brothers & Sisters (which, as usual, was phenominal.) And even if Edie is dead, then she can take over for Mary Alice as narrator.
Yawn. Boring finale and (mostly) boring year, with the show exercising selective memory about what it established previously and just tossing the rest out. Even though this season avoided being as bland as Season 2, it still left much to be desired. I still love Season 1 and will continue to treasure my DVD box set of it, but with the exception of Bang, nothing since has captivated me that much. It has really become the crappy soap it set out to make fun of, and that's more disappointing to me than anything else. Not even Bree's storyline last night was fun, and I've been anxious for Marcia Cross to return ever since she left.
*sigh* Okay, I'm done ranting for now, I guess.

If you were paying attention they showed Danielle lying in the bed with her swollen belly and crying after Bree told her that she couldn't come home that she had to stay there until after the baby was born. Then they showed Edie in tears and the close-up of the note, and then we hear the thump and the camera moves slowly over to an overturned chair and a pair of feet hanging down. Now that is what I call a classic cliff-hanger. We don't know, and won't know until next September, whether it was Edie or Danielle. I watched this part twice more before making this post, and I will probably watch it a couple more times in the next few days. Right now my money is on that it is Danielle who has taken her own life, and that is going to really make the first few weeks of Season Four a real hoot, as we see Bree try to talk her way out of this so-called "pregnancy".That would be a twist if it was her daughter. But wouldn't we have seen her pregnant belly, and it seems a little odd that they would show successive shots of Edie preparing to hang herself, with Danielle at the last minute.

Well, to each their own, but, I completely disagree with you. This season has been great, and was a major improvement over the second season. While I agree with you that Brothers & Sisters is phenominal, Desperate Housewives is, as well. Both in different ways. I don't care what anyone says, Desperate Housewives has always been in the vain of a soap opera. Granted, it's a prime time soap opera, but, it is one all the same. It always has been, and it's a great guilty pleasure.Jake Lipson wrote:I seriously do not know if I am going to bother to watch this next year. You may have watched it many times ... but you are not detailed oriented ... nor are you recounting the scenes in proper order ...
#1 - the Bree email/Danielle phone call/Fake belly scene
#2 - Susan's wedding in the forest
#3 - the ending recap of the ladies with Mary Alice narration about "family" ...
#4 - then we see Edie in tears ... the note ... the scarf ... pan over photos over her with her mother and Carlos ... and behind the photos we see Edie dangling ... after she committed suicide ...

Yep, Rowlf is right. Great theory, junkie, but I don't think Danielle would have pictures of Edie and Carlos laying around her room.
That would have been interesting, though!

Yes ... cuz we all remember that Danielle is obsessed with Carlos ... and kept photos of Edie and Carlos to look at as she plotted their destruction!

I agree, COMPLETELY. Offing Edie like that was outrageously out-of-character and a shameful way to say goodbye to such a strong character. The episode itself was mostly bland and the only thing that interested me was Bree's cover up for Danielle. I KNEW it couldn't be her pregnancy and the moment Orson said his little line at the hotel I instantly thought of Danielle.Anthony wrote:WWhile season 3 overall was pretty enjoyable (a lot better than season 2, but still doesn't measure up to the wonderful first season), the writers are going to have to spice things up a bit to make season 4 more watchable.
Season 3 started out amazing and with lots of potential but the writing became lazy and just wasn't quite on par with Season 1 (in terms of blending drama and comedy seemlessly anyway). The mystery was great, though rushed, but props to the writers for handling it under such short notice. The last third of this season was basically what ruined for me an otherwise potential-loaded season.
Ditto to that. I'm not sure if I'll tune in next year unless it decides to get back to its roots.Jake Lipson wrote:It has really become the crappy soap it set out to make fun of, and that's more disappointing to me than anything else.
Overall? 7/10 - It's a step up over season 2, but doesn't come anywhere near season 1.

I wasn't taking things out of context, I was answering a question. Yes, they showed Danielle lying in bed preggers with child and crying because Bree wouldn't bring her home.
Yes, the camera panned the room in Edies' home, and we saw the note, and the pictures, but if you were paying close attention, all you hear is the thump of something falling over............and then the camera continues panning and we see a chair tipped over and a pair of barefeet dangling, apparently but not confirmed that it is Edie.
Remember, this is the last show of this current season, and it wouldn't be called a 'cliffhanger' if they didn't leave it open for everyone's opinion as to what has happened. I think we will find through the magic of sneaky camera work, that Edie collapsed (fainted), and the feet we see hanging from the ceiling belong to Danielle. If I am wrong, so be it, but I don't think that they would kill off a major star of the series as a cliffhanger.

Actually, it is confirmed that it was Edie that hung herself. You can see pictures of her and Carlos in front of the camera while her legs dangle in the background.
