Shrek the Third Discussion Thread (Warning Spoilers Ahead)
Ok I just got back from seeing Shrek the Third at Midnight... Only 8 people showed up including me and 5 of them were Movie Employees.. (its a small locally owned Theater) IF some of you thought Spidey 3 stunk... well....... This movie tanked worse than Shrek's Body Odor.... I mean they get you all worked up that this is the best Shrek yet and in my opinion it really wasn't as great as all the hype that is created around it... I mean passing gas and burping can only get you so far in a CGI movie..... Big Let down for me.... I mean I will probably buy the DVD when it comes out but I probably won't waste more money going to see it in theater.. It just lacked originality from the first and second Shrek.... I mean Shrek 2 had originality and was not a useless sequel... although the Third Shrek was pretty useless... and the Movie was rushed.....
SPOILER WARNING of Ending AHEAD typed in white.... Ye Has Been warned
and the Ending I thought was terrible...... I mean the villains all listened to Arty's pep talk... and turned good... Except for Charming... He I think If I remember had a tower from the the set of the musical fell on him and then he didn't go to jail or anything... He's still alive at the end of the movie... at least I think........ I honestly thought that he should have been eaten by Dragon... Although they we wouldn't be getting Shrek the Fourth......

Disappointment for me, too. Incredibly bland and tamed down... too many aggravating close-up dialogue shots, as well; that the voicework was painfully bad didn't make these scenes any better... >_<
Despite all this, I'm sure it'll go on to earn $300,000,000 in the U.S.

Life often leaves us standing bare, naked and dejected with a lost opportunity. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words: "Too late."

Sorry to burst your bubble about this one, but I think, after seeing it last night with about four hundred other Shrek-lovers, this is going to be bigger than the first two.
First, you don 't go to a "Shrek" movie for the plot. You go to have your funny-bone tickled, and to have it stroked by the blend of fairy-tale traditions and pop-cultural references, which come at you a mile-a-minute in this one.
A quick look at the 'plot' will reveal: Shrek awakens one morning to find that he is next in line to the throne of Far Far Away. Orgres, being ill-suited to statemanship, Shrek is desperate to find someone who is more suited to the job. He leaves his newly-pregnant wife, Fiona, and with his buddies Donkey and Puss in Boots sets off to find Fiona's cousin, Arthur (presented Doogie-Howser-ish) voiced by Justin Timberlake. Shrek finds this 'nobleman' at a boarding school that resembles a cross between Hogwarts and ZIP code 90210.
The jokes, both visual and verbal, come at you a mile-a-minute, and it will definitely take a second-watching of this film to get them all. The funniest sequence of the movie is the 'nightmare' Shrek has about his impending fatherhood, filled with dozens of crawling, crying, pooping, home-destroying chartreuse babies. I think I laughed at this harder because I can remember when my wife told me many years ago that I was going to be the father of twins and I had nightmares for weeks.
My favorite new character is Merlin, voiced by Python Eric Idle, a skinny old gint in too-short robes, white socks and Birkenstocks.
All that being said, there are some NEGATIVES to this third installment of Shrek. The writers once again try, in vain, to bring a moral to this story right in the middle of the movie. The film is the longest of the three Shrek movies at 93 minutes, and the first half clips along at a break-neck pace until it gets slowed down by this moral-telling, and once we get passed that, it takes off again. You would think that the writers would have learned and profited by their mistakes in the first two and avoided this in the third one.
That being said, this movie will join in the summer box office and currently for the next few days go head-to-head with Spiderman 3, and next Thursday run head-on into Captain Jack Sparrow and the three-hour-long part three of "Pirates of the Caribbean". The first two Shrek movies have brought in over $1 billion at the box office, and I don't think this third installment is going to slow down the franchise. Since there is already plans for a "Shrek 4" and "Shrek 5", we might as well get used to the fact that our favorite little green man is going to be around for a while.
I would give this movie a strong 3.5/5 and recommend that everyone see it at least once, and then go see it again to pick up the jokes that you missed the first time.

The original Shrek was a fun little stab at the tame classic cliché Disney films.
But it's a little hypocritical of Katzenberg to do 5 of these movies, a holiday special, a puss in boots spinoff and a prequel.
That's worse than Disney's ever done, who have abandoned the DTV business now.
Shrek has become what it once mocked. time for Dreamworks to move on. Aliens VS Monsters sounds fun. Leave Shrek alone now please.

the fifth Shrek is only rumored right now, not confirmed. we can't take Antonio's full word since they might be making it but not finish it at all. this film looks funny since i liked the first two for the comedy, since it's not one of those films which have sex comedy only, and the fact that i like fairy tale type stories so it's fun to see what fairy tale character it is i'm seeing.

First off, I never knew Shrek 5 was in negotiation...I thought it was Shrek 4 along with a Puss spin-off...
Secondly, I thought this film was a riot. I agree with dvdjunkie. You don't come for plot, you come for Eddie Murphy's and Antonio Banderas' on-screen comedic chemistry. The SNL ladies as the princesses was just an added bonus.
I also LOVED Hook in this film. Hilarious. Especially the part where he finds "Peter".
And his other line: "Avast, ye cookie!"
The bad things I have to say are few:
-The king's death scene I think went a little overboard. It teetered on bad taste for me.
-The villians turning good. I HATE that. They're villians! They're not supposed to turn good!
-Justin Timberlake. Totally wrong for the part and only got it because he was with Cameron at the time.
All in all, a worthy sequel. And those dragon-donkeys are SO CUTE.

No, sorry. She's there, but her part is kind of ignored...if you think about it, doesn't her existence put the whole plot to shame. Wouldn't she just be queen alone instead of Shrek having to be king?UmbrellaFish wrote:I haven't seen this movie yet but I haven't been too excited about this one at all, since it just seemed weak to me. I really liked Shrek 2 when I saw it, though. The only reason I might watch is Julie Andrews. By the way, does she have a bigger part in this one?

Aww.... I thought she got a bigger role. I guess I'm okay though. I've always been a little mad she joined Dreamworks. And you're right about the queen ruling alone thing. Although, I don't see her ruling without the king. They just go well together.numba1lostboy wrote: No, sorry. I'm gonna take my daughter to see it tomorrow.
As said twice before, its not about the plot. Its the entertainment value. I doubt it will be Oscar worthy, but it will be a nice 93 minute escape into fun for a little while.
And I absolutely love the dronkeys. I keep stopping at McDonalds to see if they have the dronkey toy in yet. I have all the other dronkey toys. Except the one that Walmart has with the DVD. First, I already have the DVD. $20 just to get a really lame-@$$, badly made stuffed toy that looks like it belongs in the cheapie crane machines is not worth it to me. But I got the twin dronkey toys Walmart sells. They are damn cute.

Hey first post! Woot woot!
So about the movie. I actually liked it a lot. I loved the A Chorus Line music, and the dronkeys are amazing. The animation is amazing. I really loved the princesses, I know some disagree with me, but I still loved them. I loved Cinderella's and Sleeping Beauty's fighting skills.

I went to see a afternoon showing of this today. Pretty empty theater, but people were already getting tickets for the evening showings. I agree that the Third will be just as big as the first two.
I wasn't disappointed with this film at all. I still prefer the original Shrek to the two sequels, but this was a solid film filled with a lot of laughs.
The ending with the villians turning good was a little weak, but didn't ruin the film for me at all.
Artie was ok, but Merlin was hilarious. Gingy was also great as usual. Come on who would have thought we would see a Gingerbread Man's life pass before his eyes.
Compared to my feelings for Spider-Man 3 this film officially started the Summer Movies for me.

Maybe that's meant to be a subtle jab at The Lion King.numba1lostboy wrote: No, sorry. She's there, but her part is kind of ignored...if you think about it, doesn't her existence put the whole plot to shame. Wouldn't she just be queen alone instead of Shrek having to be king?

Even though it is supposed to show how Arthur will be a good king, I would have rather had a huge war against the villains.DarthPrime wrote:The ending with the villians turning good was a little weak, but didn't ruin the film for me at all.
I admit it, I wished the Fairy Godmother would've come back from the dead somehow because she was a good rival for Shrek. Prince Charming doesn't come close.
When Snow White was singing in the forest diverging the trees, was that a reference to Walt Disney's Snow White because they even had her voice "beatened down" as if it was a recording made from long ago with an old microphone.
