Yup, too bad they won't be coming out for another year.Joe Carioca wrote:As you all can see, the insert inside the DVD case also promotes "Pocahontas" and "Lilo & Stitch"!
Are you excited for Alice In Wonderland?

Mary Poppins, as well as a few other live action features with animated sequences have always been part of the Classics or Masterpiece collection on video.Disneykid wrote:I'm still baffled at how Mary Poppins will be included in the Masterpiece Edition line which I thought would've been for the animated classics, only.
Oh, yeah, I forgot about that, but I figured Disney would keep the two separated since these were supposedly the definitive editions of the movies on DVD. Could this mean a Bedknobs and Broomsticks ME in the future...? Well, I've got my copy this morning.
(I've been looking forward to using this quote for a long time)
"It's great. It's grand. Tra-la, la, la, la, la, wonderland".
Howver something does annoy me. Open the slipcover up (like a book) and nothing is made of the most important features of the set.
One half is filled with the Virtual Tea-Party nonsense - which includes Mad, Mad Riddles, Teapot Orchestra, Caucus Race - A Silly Song and Dance, Mad Hatter Says and A Shrinking Adventure - An Unbirthday Song. Apparently it will be different each time you play it.
The other half lists the Newly Discovered Song (again), The Set Top Game (Adventures In Wonderland), The Thru The Mirror short, and the Walt Disney's TV introductions.
In bullet points are; Art Galleries, Original Theatrical Trailers, Sing Along Songs, Deleted Materials, Operation Wonderland Featurette and the now customary "Much, Much More".
Why the hell isn't the One Hour in Wonderland tv special included? This is a major part of Disney history and will be the main reason most people on this board are buying the DVD. Its the main reason I'm buying it (not being that keen on Alice).
Also, an insert lists the 3 other Masterpiece Editions, Mary Poppins, Pocahontas and Lilo and Stitch just as "Coming Soon".

I've really grown to love those slipcovers so as well as the inadequate listing, I don't really like the layout of the inside of the slip either. The previous ones, like the Lion King, have been much better, aesthetically ...2099net wrote:Howver something does annoy me. I'm going on those photos that were posted *thanks!* but I suppose I won't really know until I have my copy in my grubby little hands
More vague, let's-postpone-these-again dates. They should really grow some balls *sorry, I'm watching the Australian Open* and be decisive. Also, an insert lists the 3 other Masterpiece Editions, Mary Poppins, Pocahontas and Lilo and Stitch just as "Coming Soon".

Is it even in the slightest bit amusing?
If you didn't like the 'activities' on the Lion King disc, or the Virtual Safari then... I would hate to be in the room when you play this for the first time.
Plus it seems to go on for hours and hours...

Well the Alice set seems to suffer from the same problems as the international 2 disc Peter Pan set.
What is on here is a treasure. The One Hour in Wonderland is, just like the silent version of Peter Pan on the Peter Pan set, something that is well worth seeing. So is the Alice comedy, and the deleted concepts, etc.
But nothing is introduced properly. It's just there. Even the pictures in the poor gallery section don't even explain what you are looking at. The R1 Sleeping Beauty set had the same sort of contents... archive programmes from the vaults, but each had a proper introduction, and gave historical perspectives and reasons for their inclusion.
Plus there's next to nothing on the actual making of the film. The Peter Pan set had the "making of" and commentary from the previous Special Edition release. Sleeping Beauty also had the previously released "making of" as well as an all-new commentary. This set has nothing.
Really, this set should have had everything from the LD set, plus a new documentary on the making of the film and even some text pages on the original story and history (like the Sleeping Beauty disc).
I dread to think how much time and money they spent on the appaling Virtual Tea Party, yet couldn't find the time or money to film or record a few introductions for the second disc (and fund a proper, multi-subject gallery).
It's a disappointment - I would hardly call it a Masterpiece - but still worth getting just for the One Hour in Wonderland.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I read the various DVD reviews for this. It's mostly a collection of archival specials and songs without anything regarding the actual production process. I think the reason Disney refused to do commentary for this (besides being cheap) is that they're a bit ashamed of Alice. They can't make a Walt commentary like with Snow White and Fantasia because Walt had virtually nothing positive to say on this production. They can't use edited remarks from the animators because they, too, focused more on Alice's negatives than positives. Their best bet for making a commentary would've been to just have a film historian read off a script detailing the history and production of Alice, with maybe some edited-in remarks by Kathryn Beaumont and any (few) positive comments they could find from the animators. I think all this applies to the reason of there not being a new featurette, as well.
In terms of what we missed from the laserdisc, it seems a bit ofa rip off we didn't get them because they wouldn't have taken up much space at all on Disc Two. The DVD is missing two story outlines (like the kind found on Sleeping Beauty), a BBC radio broadcast (perhaps they couldn't get the rights to this, so I'll excuse this), at least 10 other song demos that failed to show up on DVD, and much more extensive galleries. I still think this DVD set looks overall positive, but falls short of perfection. Would it have been so hard for them to port over EVERYTHING from the LD, create new intros, and add commentary and a featurette? Even if they spent money on new features and making the galleries virtual, Alice still would've been a cheap DVD to produce as 3/4 of its material was readily available on LD.
