Two more weeks till Alice in Wonderland is on DVD.

Boo. I'm still excited for this release, but the fact that the gallery is skimpy, there's no commentary, and no new featurette keeps this release from being the definitive Alice DVD it could've been. Sigh...

The art gallery is the biggest disappointment of the lot. We all know Disney has the artwork on file. If they spent a fraction of the time on making a new art gallery than they spent on making a virtual wonderland tea-party then they could of had one of the most extensive galleries yet.

Again, we all know where the priorities are.

My Laserdisc has a massive still-frame gallery -- from the earlier storyboards of the abandoned Alice version considered in 1946, to the storyboards of what was eventually used, plus abandoned concepts.

The laserdisc also had TONS of song demos, many of which were a blast to listen to, and the majority of which did not make it into the movie.

The Laserdisc was $99, the new DVD is less than $30.

Guess I got what I paid for, though I'm not sure the extended galleries and song demos are worth an extra $60.

That's exactly what I thought... It's a shame "Alice in Wonderland" will be the first Disney 2-discer without the massive art galleries. Even "Treasure Planet", that had only one disc, had enough galleries to put a lot of DVDs to shame.
Even the 2-disc "Peter Pan" had a modest, yet good, gallery... It wasn't that long, but at least the DVD had other two publicity galleries to make up for it.

I'm still looking forward to the "Alice in Wonderland" DVD, and I beleive it will be a very good DVD, specially for the all-new restoration. Still, as Disneykid said, this won't be the ultimate Alice edition... Disney could include everything that was on the LD, including the extensive galleries and the aditional audio extras (interviews, radio spots and programs...). They could even produce an audio commentary with this material!

Well, I'm very happy that the international releases of "Pocahontas" have no gallery!

Holy freaking crap...I never thought it was possible to make Alice look better than what it was since the Gold Classic had such a pristine picture...but based on on those screencaps, it's possible...I'm impressed.

Rather odd the IGN review doesn't mention the 6 or 7 song demos included on Disc Two...

Oh, the damn stickers! I only keep the ones that say "Limited Edition" or something like that. But this one on the "Alice" cover is badly placed... it almost covers the Cheshire Cat! And you, do you keep the stickers or take them off?

Well, I usually take them off. But sometimes the stickers make a mess of the cover with the residue left behind...that's what happened to my Sleeping Beauty DVD.

The people who make the stickers for the DVDs should follow Borders' example of their stickers--easy to peel off and no residue left behind.

Disney's Exclusive Archives Collection Laser Disc Box Alice In Wonderland (6139 CS) contains an astonishing amount of supplemental materials of great interest: the complete "One Hour In Wonderland" TV special from Dec. 25, 1950, which features Kathryn as "hostess;" a 1951 promotional film, "Operation Wonderland," presented as originally broadcast on "Ford Star Review" on June 14th, 1951; a lengthy excerpt from "The Fred Waring Show" of March 18, 1951, which is both a charming example of early live television and a chance to see Kathryn perform the "Alice" songs live. There's also a one-hour BBC radio dramatization based on the film; snippets from the animators' live-action reference film; and an audio recoding of "Brahms' Lullaby" from August 26, 1947 which is labeled "Kathryn Beaumont Test." Also included are song demos, among them "Beyond The Laughing Sky," which was written for Alice but which appeared - with new lyrics - as "The Second Star To The Right" in "Peter Pan."

Up until the recent release of the supplement-loaded DVD of "Snow White," the laser box of "Alice" was the most comprehensive package the Disney Company had ever released on any of its features. Above all, it's a showcase for Kathryn Beaumont. Let's hope Disney decides to reissue and expand the LD Archives Edition on DVD.

It's a shame we are not getting to hear all those audio recordings. Well, we can't have everything... Hmm, but in this case, we could!

I tend to take them off.
I used to keep them (especially the ones that said "Limited"), but now I take them off because I like to see the full cover art (I'm the same with CDs).

Loomis' Handy Household Hints:
To remove stickiness, try eucalyptus oil, nail polish remover or tea-tree oil, or a similar substance (this, of course, doesn't work on the cardboard surfaces. For those, try removing them with a hairdryer).

Usually the stickers come off with no problems. Goo Gone is a good substance to remove stickiness if it does occur.

Yes, it is. "Wide-screen" as we know it wasn't codified as a film format until 1952, although some experimental wide-format live-action films had been made prior to "The Robe" and Disney's own "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (1954).

Andy simply made a rushed typo, because he's churning out reviews almost single-handed on a daily basis.

Oh well, at least it's on the back of the case instead of the front.

That, my friend, is why I HATE Target. When I bought both The Lion King & Die Another Day, there was one of their stupid "Buy this get a Pringles free" sticker that when the cashier ripped it off, it left either a big sticky mark, or a ripped white mark. Both times I returned the DVDs. From now on, I'm never buying anything with special packaging there.
