What are some of your favorite old Live-Action Disney films?

Post by littlefuzzy »

I was just wondering what people thought of the pre-1980 Live-Action Disney movies...
The ones I have right now (and love) are:

Absent-Minded Professor, The (1961)
Apple Dumpling Gang, The - Special Edition (1975)
Cat from Outer Space, The (1978)
Old Yeller - Vault Disney Collection (1957)
Parent Trap, The - Vault Disney Collection (1961)
Pollyanna - Vault Disney Collection (1960)
Swiss Family Robinson - Vault Disney Collection (1960)
That Darn Cat (VHS)

I also have The Three Lives of Thomasina on order, but I've never seen it.

I don't have these, but I remember them and plan to get them someday...
Treasure Island
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
The Shaggy Dog/D.A.
The Love Bug movies
Unidentified Flying Oddball
The Black Hole

I'm sure there are others that I have seen, but can't recall, and that I would enjoy if I bought them.

Edit: I forgot about the older TV Movies, most of which I've never seen...

I'd like to see the Moochie films, for one. Those might make a good WD Treasure...

Although not Disney, another similar title I'd like to get is C.H.O.M.P.S. Anyone remember that one??

I don't have very many, but the 2 that I do have so far (20,000 Leagues and Moon Spinners) I really enjoy. I'd also like to get some more some time.

Some of my favorites:

Mary Poppins
Escape to Witch Mountain
The Apple Dumpling Gang
Freaky Friday
the Dexter Riley Trilogy
The Barefoot Executive
The Shaggy Dog
The Shaggy D.A.
Darby O'Gill and the Little People
Old Yeller
Toby Tyler, or Ten Weeks with a Circus
The Parent Trap
Pollyanna
Swiss Family Robinson
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Treasure Island
Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier (not really a movie, but it works as such)
That Darn Cat
The Moon-Spinners
Napoleon and Samantha
Pete's Dragon
Bedknobs and Broomsticks

Alright, this list is getting too long, and it's tough for me to distinguish a "favorite" from something that is merely a lot of fun.

I'm sure there are a lot of folks like me, who feel "classic" Disney live-action has a certain quality to it that makes pretty much all of them likable favorites. However, I'll try to be picky here.

I REALLY Love (not really in order):

Mary Poppins (Super Duper Fave!)
The Happiest Millionaire (Super Duper Fave!)
Treasure Island (Super Duper Fave!)
Adventures of Bullwhip Griffin (Super Duper Fave!)
Darby O' Gill and the Little People (Super Duper Fave!)
Pete's Dragon (Super Duper Fave!)
So Dear to My Heart (Super Duper Fave!)
Song of the South (Super Duper Fave!)
Bedknobs and Broomsticks (Super Duper Fave!)
the Dexter Riley movies (Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, Now You See Him, Now You Don't, and Strongest Man in the World) (Super Duper Fave!)
The Herbie movies (surprisingly, my favorite has always been Herbie Goes Bananas, ha) (Super Duper Fave!)
Pollyanna (Super Duper Fave!)
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (Super Duper Fave!)
Swiss Family Robinson (Super Duper Fave!)
Johnny Tremain (Super Duper Fave!)
The Monkey's Uncle
The Shaggy Dog (Super Duper Fave!)
The Shaggy D.A.
The Ugly Dachshund
Blackbeard's Ghost
Old Yeller
That Darn Cat
The Black Hole
The Gnome Mobile
Toby Tyler
Parent Trap
Hot Lead and Cold Feet (though I haven't seen it in forever)
No Deposit, No Return
(and Return to Oz, if it is old enough to count, (Super Duper Fave!))

I really do love all classic Disney live-action though. Plus, I'm sure some stuff I just forgot. And, I still need MOST of those on DVD (and many of those I don't even have on VHS).

The Incredible Journey is my favourite, hands down.

I used to love the Cat from Outer Space as a kid, but I haven't watched it in some years now.

Here are mine:
(in no real order)

1. The Happiest Millionaire (took me forever to find but loved it ever since I found the soundtrack)
2. Pete's Dragon (I rented it for a week out of curiosity, and watched it three times, once even with the subtitles so I could know the words to the songs)
3. Bedknobs and Broomsticks (the live action film I've loved the longest)
4. Summer Magic
5. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
6. Pollyanna
7. The Parent Trap
8. Babes in Toyland (that isn't a joke)
9. Swiss Family Robinson
10. The Black Hole (just for the opening theme  )

As a kid, I definitely would have said Flight of the Navigator, but I don't know if I could consider it a top fave today (haven't seen it in some time though).

Anyways, I can't remember if Scarecrow of Romney Marsh is officially a feature or not. If it is, it's definitely a fave too.

Also, since some of us have stepped into the 80s with this, gotta say "One Magic Christmas." And, there are probably more from around then that I'm forgetting.

The Shaggy Dog
Swiss Family Robinson
Mary Poppins
The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes
Bedknobs and Broomsticks

Does Return to Oz really count as a Disney movie? It's being released by Anchor Bay, as far as I know.

The Cat From Outer Space is just awesome. I couldn't tell you why, but I used to be obsessed with that movie when I was little.

It was produced by Disney and is currently distributed on DVD by Disney. Even when it was only available on home video through Anchor Bay, it was still a Disney film on lease to them. However, as it was released in 1985, it doesn't qualify as a valid response to the original post.

My very favorite is Mary Poppins, followed very closely by The Parent Trap. I also enjoy Pollyanna, among others, while The Three Lives of Thomasina has always been a particular sentimental favorite even though I've found it lacking during more recent viewings.

I've never really liked much in terms of Disney live action *runs for cover* though The Parent Trap and Bedknobs and Broomsticks are favs of mine. I've yet to see Mary Poppins, but I do enjoy parodies of her so when I see the movie I'll probably enjoy it.

Sorry, didn't even catch that the first post said "before 1980." Definitely, the Disney stuff felt very different once 1980 came around, though I have some major favorites all the way through to today (just a few would be my number one favorite film, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and two other top faves, Adventures of Huck Finn starring Elijah Wood, and Hocus Pocus).

Anywho, I love Cat From Outer Space too, though maybe not as much as the stuff that I listed. I have the Anchor Bay release, but, sadly, I believe both that one and my Ancor Bay Black Hole DVD need replacing. A few of my discs got damaged some time ago, and I think those two were among them.

Here are the live-action Disney flicks I have on DVD at the moment. At least, all the ones I can remember off the top of my head:

Happiest Millionaire (Anchor Bay)
Happiest Millionaire RoadShow Edition (Anchor Bay)
Cat From Outer Space (Anchor Bay) (needs replacing)
Black Hole (Anchor Bay) (needs Replacing)
Mary Poppins (2-disc and Gold)
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Pete's Dragon
Treasure Island
Bullwhip Griffin
All the Stuff in the Disney Treasures sets
Parent Trap (Vault Disney 2-disc one)
Misadventures of Merlin Jones
Santa Clause 2
Return to Oz (Anchor Bay)
Pirates 1 and 2 (both 2 disc)
Country Bears
102 Dalmatians (accidentally got fullscreen!)
Hocus Pocus
Adventures of Huck Finn
Roger Rabbit (2-disc)
Dick Tracy
The Bears and I (Anchor Bay) (haven't watched this one yet)
Blackbeard's Ghost
Haunted Mansion
Summer Magic
Love Bug boxed set
Herbie Fully Loaded
Lizzie McGuire Movie
Tron

So, yeah, I'm lacking several, though many others I have on VHS.
