I thought the extra advertising was a little cool - I wonder if they were approached by Disney or if the game show did it all on their own?
Hey I was screaming $20, but then I remembered the SRP value, and then started screaming $30. That lady Rita, was terrible at that game. I'm surprised that she got the price for the silverware!

Hahahahaa. Wasn't that funny? It was so obvious it was 750, too. It's too bad - she could have won the car. At least she got the Dumbo DVD and the flatware! She kept guessing things ending with odd numbers like 9 or 7. Everyone knows most prices end with a zero, five, or nine.

Don't know if anyone posted this yet, but I was just at the Disney store and they have an entirely different packaging for "Big Top" there! It is in a red plastic case and from what I recall, a different picture than what was on my slipcover, so now I am confused! There's two different packages for the DVD?

ummm...it looks the same to me...with the exception of the "NEW BIG TOP EDITION" in red on the bottom....That pic to me looks more like a advertisement for Dumbo, or a poster...interesting...

I would go look at the Disney store myself, but they closed the one in my mall...I guess because they didn't get as much profit from that store as they wanted....  So now, I don't have a Disney Store.

I hope I can explain this right. They put their dvd covers inside of red cases so you can bring them to the counter and they give you a real one they have at the counter to purchase. I think the empty dvds have a name but I don't know what it is.

That's probably not the best representation of what I saw because that looks like a cover but doesn't show the case. What it looked like was basically a red plastic case with the picture of Dumbo/big top on the cover, pasted to the plastic case. No slip cover. I am pretty brain-dead when it comes to memorizing minute details like the rest of you, so this really was A LOT different because I noticed it right away. My version from Target, the slipcover sort of looks mostly pink and kind of irredescent and then the case is white.... I would almost perfer the red case but it doesn't come with a slip cover and I'm one of those slipcover worshipers... :P

Anyway, the point is that there is a alternative version of the DVD for those who might want to check it out - its at the Disney Stores.

Magicalwands has already explained this. The Disney Store keeps its DVDs behind the register counter so that no one can just pick up a DVD and run out the exit. The red cases are just mock-ups to let consumers know which films are available for purchase. They put multiple mock-up covers of the same title on the shelf so that when someone brings it to the cashier asking, "Hey, where's the DVD?", another person can still know that that same title is available by looking at the other place holders. Personally, I think it would just be easier to put a big sign in the middle of the store depicting all of the Disney movies available with a notice underneath saying, "Please see Cast Member at the register for DVD purchasing".

Oh, sorry! This is a long thread and I didn't have time to read through the entire thread. Thanks for explaining. I was just going to post that I was there again today and noticed that all their DVDs are in Red cases! I thought maybe that is just how they were packaging them for the Disney store....

this is starting to remind me of the time I called the police because I saw people drving around in circles in a parking lot across the street and they'd stop and get out and then switch drivers. I thought it was some sort of drug deals or something. The police laughed and told me that the they knew the parking lot and these were people who were practicing learning how to drive. (I was new in LA and I'd learned to drive in high school so what did I know?)

Dumbo! Bah!

Post by Owlzindabarn »

Looking over the review, and noticing everyone's comments here, I'd have to pass on Big Top Dumbo. It doesn't seem like enough of an improvement over the 60th anniversary dvd, which I"ve always been happy with. Maybe someday if they do a platinum, but by that time we'll be well into the next format and we'll have to upgrade anyway. But this Big Top edition....looking at the color comparisons, I'd say they were trying to make Dumbo look TOO new. All the nuances of the original are gone. Bah! Forget it! I'm running out to buy this pile of elephant poo as quick as I'm running out to buy the new edition of Lady & the Tramp II...

Dumbo- Which Version??

Post by brotherbear »

As I'm here listening to the mp3 of "Pink Elephants on Parade", I'm seriously debating which version of Dumbo I should purchase...the OOP 60th Aniversary Ed. or the new Big Top Ed. I have read the review of the BTE in detail, but I'm still in doubt about which version I should get. I know that the new version has more bonus features overall, but they dropped the 2 trailers! (Trailers are my favorite bonus features...and I serioulsy dont know why..) And on top of that, the "Pink Elephants" scene has gotten darker...and I really think the fact that the elephants were a bright pink made them stand out...now they're not nearly as bright... :( and Pink Elephants on Parade is my favorite scene in the whole movie!

Anyway, which version do you guys think I should buy? (I'm considering buying it soon if I decide to go with the BTE since it can still be found easily with the slipcover)..and on the flip side, if I go with the 60th aniv. ed, then I will have to search for it.

What do you think??

I would go with the Dumbo: Big Top Edition simply because it is the newer of the two. Plus, if you are a fan of the slipcovers, it comes with one where the 60th anniversary edition does not.

I would choose the 60th Anniversary Edition, because of the more substantial bonus features, even though I have the Big Top Edition. I would have gotten the 60th Anniversary Edition, but it was OOP. But oh well.

I'd go for the 60th Anniversary Edition. Less obnoxious cover art, NO slipcover to worry about, has the wonderful trailers, and while the transfer isn't as...well, it's the lesser of the two. The added features to the BTE could be interesting to some (I wouldn't mind seeing the Jim Brickman/Kassie de Paiva music video), but ultimately unnecessary.

Bwahaha, most of my DAC's are used!

Snow White: PE
Pinocchio: GC
Fantasia
Alice in Wonderland: ME
Peter Pan: SE
Sleeping Beauty: SE
Beauty and the Beast: PE
The Lion King: PE
Tarzan: CE
Atlantis: CE
Treasure Planet
Brother Bear: SE

It's all a matter of knowing where and when to look, and even passing on some because of the condition of the case. Thankfully, all of the above (except Sleeping Beauty) were in WONDERFUL condition.

Deffinatley go for the Big Top Edition. It has been restored so the picture quality is better than the 60th Anniversary Edition. The only things you are loosing is a pointless look at the no-longer in production "Dumbo 2," A Michael Crawford music video which is replaced by a Jim Brickman music video for the same song "Baby Mine," and an excerpt from "The Reluctant Dragon" about the creation of the voice for Casy Jr. You are gaining a DisneyPedia about circus animals. The BTE is easy to obtain. I wouldn't go through the trouble of tracking down the 60E when the new release isn't loosing much and is really an improvement. It even kept the commentary.

hehe well thats cool, yeah I don't like used dvd's because I used to get them and they would always have problems(like with the case and pakcage and sometimes even the disc performance. but I think if your careful and know which ones to get then its cool. Its also a good way to save money, but the one thing I really cannot stand at all is evne more then used dvds is...BOOTLEG DVD's agh those are annoying.
