Uh, that is pretty upsetting. I'm with you - I'd prefer a crisp look with no grain - I think that is what people expect to see, even if it wasn't how the film was really when it was first made..... is there a happy medium? Who did the Snow White restoration? I think SW looked amazing.
Well, we where all excited about this DVD.... going on for 65 pages of excitement and anticipation and I think (thanks to critical reviewers) that we've managed to ruin our own party here. I mean, are we being TOO critical, or does 271286 have some legit points? Are we going to go through this high with every big anticipated release only to be so critical that we can't enjoy anything that Disney puts out anymore? Or are there really issues here with restoration? I'm now really bummed out about this film. We've taken a perfectly exciting experience of building up to this release only to ruin it now.
I've got a test in 4 days so I have to bug out of this discussion until next week, but this is what I'd like to know:
First of all, this film came out in 1989 and then to DVD in 1999, correct? So those of you who are lucky enough to own the 1999 LI DVD version, (not knowing whether or not the movie had been restored for its DVD debut but assuming that it couldn't have been too degraded within 10 years to really make much difference), can we have some of you compare your LI version to the new release and maybe even post some screen caps? That would be one way to try and settle some of this. Then there is the whole issue of what should be done in a hand drawn animated film in terms of restoration that has been brought up. I haven't read the old Cinderella (have they gone too far) thread, and it would probably take me a good week to digest all of that, but I think that what 271286 has said, that we have some old 1950s classics that look amazing after restoration, and frankly, I'd prefer that type of treatment to be done to TLM and it sounds from what the reviewers have said, that the restoration is not even in the ballpark or perhaps was approached from an entirely different perspective than how the restorations of Cinderella and Snow White etc. were approached. All food for thought. Perhaps they went for a more "natural" approach: "Let's not make it look too over done," or something like that. Or perhaps it was a budgetary issue (not enough to do that type of clean restoration) or it was the quality of work that this particular restoration studio does.... I dunno. Anyway, gotta go for now; will rejoin discussion when I can. Hope some of you will think about perhaps looking at that old LI DVD and posting some screen caps, along with screen caps from the new Platinum version.
