I dont know how it looks on a LCD TV but i'm assuming it must be pretty much like when watching it on a lcd computerscreen.... and when I watched it on my notebook there was DEFINATELY A LOT of grain... I dont have the LE so I cant compare but this is not what I would expect of a so-called Platinum Edition - also having in mind that the movie is only from 1989... Regardless of what people think of the restoration on Cinderella - It doesnt have ANY grain... If its possible to make a movie from the 50's look that smooth it should not be that difficult to do it with a movie from the late 80's!
Well look at Snow White! It looks better than Dumbo and it's older than Dumbo a few years. I have the LE DVD and there is A LOT of grain on it. I am sure they did some job to get some of it out. I hope there aren't any white dots on the TV! I will be mad! :x

I hope the R2 transfer is better... Though I doubt it...

Also another thing I noticed the part during the concert where Mickey and Goofy is sitting among the audience seems to be gone?? Maybe due to the cropping... What a shame...

Noo, don't tell me that. I can't believe it still looks grainy. I love this film and I was very excited because finally I was going to see it completely restored :( . And I totally agree with you with the last thing that you said about Cinderella's restoration.

OH. MY. GOD.

SHUT UP.

I swear to my mother, this is getting so ridiculously out of hand. Two days before the DVD is release and some Home Theatre sites and their reviewers with high-quality pins up their asses send the entire forum into a uproar.

"Oh lordy, the picture quality! It's the most horrendous thing I've ever seen! j21r0319th249t9!!W!W!:!!"!"

"Oh no! One centimeter cut off the screen? What will we do?"

You'll all be lucky enough to own the damn thing. How's about we stop whining and remember the fact that Disney could've been an evil piece of crap corporation, and just shoveled out some copies of the Limited Issue adding only the PE banner to it (Tarzan, The Emperor's New Groove anyone?) Honestly.

AGREED.

Stop complaining! I don't think I've ever read a good review about a DVD (other than here at UD) because all the people that write the reviews are uptight and expect perfection. Just shut up and enjoy your movie!

Anybody who has watched it already -- is the infamous priest edited in the Platinum Edition? I am assuming so, as they edited the SFX in Lion King and "Take off _____" in Aladdin -- and I know edited the preiest in the Limited Edition, but I'm just wondering if it's back to normal in the Platinum or if it is still edited out?

you two complaining about the complainers seem more frustrated than anyone. calm down. when a reviewer complains, they usually have a legitimate reason behind it. they have to have a critical eye, its part of their job. there's no reason to bash them just because some of you guys choose to ignore or are blind to certain shortcomings.

EDIT: yes, the priest has been redrawn so there is no question about his knee.

I, myself, having been having a horrible weekend, so yes, possibly I might be a bit overly tense. I am also not blind nor do I ignore the various shortcomings of films, but I find it absolutely ridiculous that the past some pages have been all compaints or annoyances with a DVD that hasn't even been properly released.

Uh, that is pretty upsetting. I'm with you - I'd prefer a crisp look with no grain - I think that is what people expect to see, even if it wasn't how the film was really when it was first made..... is there a happy medium? Who did the Snow White restoration? I think SW looked amazing.

Well, we where all excited about this DVD.... going on for 65 pages of excitement and anticipation and I think (thanks to critical reviewers) that we've managed to ruin our own party here. I mean, are we being TOO critical, or does 271286 have some legit points? Are we going to go through this high with every big anticipated release only to be so critical that we can't enjoy anything that Disney puts out anymore? Or are there really issues here with restoration? I'm now really bummed out about this film. We've taken a perfectly exciting experience of building up to this release only to ruin it now.

I've got a test in 4 days so I have to bug out of this discussion until next week, but this is what I'd like to know:

First of all, this film came out in 1989 and then to DVD in 1999, correct? So those of you who are lucky enough to own the 1999 LI DVD version, (not knowing whether or not the movie had been restored for its DVD debut but assuming that it couldn't have been too degraded within 10 years to really make much difference), can we have some of you compare your LI version to the new release and maybe even post some screen caps? That would be one way to try and settle some of this. Then there is the whole issue of what should be done in a hand drawn animated film in terms of restoration that has been brought up. I haven't read the old Cinderella (have they gone too far) thread, and it would probably take me a good week to digest all of that, but I think that what 271286 has said, that we have some old 1950s classics that look amazing after restoration, and frankly, I'd prefer that type of treatment to be done to TLM and it sounds from what the reviewers have said, that the restoration is not even in the ballpark or perhaps was approached from an entirely different perspective than how the restorations of Cinderella and Snow White etc. were approached. All food for thought. Perhaps they went for a more "natural" approach: "Let's not make it look too over done," or something like that. Or perhaps it was a budgetary issue (not enough to do that type of clean restoration) or it was the quality of work that this particular restoration studio does.... I dunno. Anyway, gotta go for now; will rejoin discussion when I can. Hope some of you will think about perhaps looking at that old LI DVD and posting some screen caps, along with screen caps from the new Platinum version.

I don't have the new release, yet. I will on Tuesday. I do, however, have the Limited Issue release, and I can tell you, the picture is NOT good on it. It's extremely grainy, it is not anamorphic, and it is not very colorful. From what I've seen of the screencaps from the Platinum Edition, it looks to be a great improvement from the Limited Issue. I'm sure that when Luke posts the review, he will give information on the differences between the two.

I'm looking very forward to the Platinum Edition release. Even if it isn't perfect, it is certainly to be a big step-up from the Limited Issue.

DVD Movie Guide has posted its review here:

http://www.dvdmg.com/littlemermaidplatinum.shtml

He's way more enthusiastic about the transfer, and although he admits to there being occasional softness and grain, he's still pleased by it. Considering he's usually a pretty tough critic, this is good news.

The galleries seem pretty solid, though I'm a tad disappointed in the lack of a publicity gallery. I'm really looking forward to the abandoned ride feature. I really wish Disney would utilize the vacant area in Magic Kingdom's Fantasyland where 20,000 Leagues used to be and build this dark ride over there. It'd fit nicely with Ariel's Grotto, too.

Wait a minute! The DVD Movie Guide review states that this film is NOT enhanced for 16x9 screens? That can't be right! If this is true, then I believe that this release is not looking as great as I had hoped. I hope that this review is wrong.

If not, I may have to pass.

Let's also not forget that before May 2003, everyone expected TLM to be re-released in 2008. Be grateful the film got 2 years off its vault time.
