I mean I know it was a smaller budget but it sure shows too. i dont know it might have had to do with the big top edition turning me off to the whole thing too so I dont know. maybe if it was released as a platinum with GOOD restoration I would have liked it..... I know iv said this a million times already but here it is again :P
No restoration is going to make Dumbo look like Bambi (I hope...). :P The Dumbo style should rather be compared to that of Disney's shorts, not Bambi.

the sense of humor from that time period is a lot different than it is now. A lot of the cute things would've been regarded as funny things in some instances. yes dumbo has many cute parts and are obviously made to be cute, but the stork having so much diffuculty carying dumbo to the train and it slipping through the cloud repeatedly, the stork getting mrs. jumbo's signiture and seeing it's just an "X" and is able to read it as mrs. jumbo, thent he stork being caught on the mail thing before this big finish while singing happy birthday to dumbo, the dumbo's drunk and see's pink elephants scene, the crow's song, the clown's show sequence, the entire ending sequence when dumbo learns to fly they all seem humurous to me. The entire movie is also designed in a very cartoony way, and i don't think that choice in design had anything to do with the films budgit. that's all my opinion though, and i'm just offerning an idea for why disney seems to market this film differently from snow white, pinocchio, fantasia, and bambi.

Well, I guess that "someone" would have to be Disney... 8)

But in certain cases, such as The Black Cauldron, I wouldn't really mind a release from the Criterion Collection.

The only people who could possibly release those titles would be Disney themselves. As for that list, I'm afraid to say that 8 classics in 1 year is a lot to ask from Disney. We haven't seen that kind of a release schedule since 2001 when the Gold Classic Collection was attempting to release 2-3 films a month. Maybe a release schedule like that will return if Blue Ray or HDDVD takes off and Disney sees the money making potential. I would LOVE for a "The Black Cauldron" 25th Anniversary Edition to come out in 2008. However, Disney doesn't typically treat this film well because of how poorly it has performed theatrically and in home video releases. Also, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" has it's 10th Anniversary this year. I personally am hoping for a 2-disc special edition to commemorate it, like they did with "Pocahontas." Hopefully it will be announced very soon for an early 2007 release date, but probably not. Maybe next year we will get one for "Hercules" with a restored animorphic transfer! Next year is it's 10th anniversary. I really think some of the names for these releases are going too far. But what really matters is if we get restored better releases of the films we love. Anyways, here is what I think would be most probable for a release in the next 2 years and why:

"Hercules"- It's anniversary is coming up, the GC release has a music video as a bonus feature and an unrestored non-animorphic transfer. It was last released to DVD in 2000, so it's been 6 years since it's last release. However, Disney has kept this an open edition and they are still making copies of that edition. So it is possible that we won't see a restored version for a while.

"The Hunchback of Notre Dame"- It's anniversary is here and this film has enough fan potential to have a good selling 2-disc set. It was last released to DVD in 2002, but the last release of "Peter Pan" was in 2003 and that is getting a 2-disc PE in March. However, this DVD has remained an open edition as well.

"The Aristocats"- This film has gained much popularity in recent years. On my last trip to Disney World, there was tons of Marie merchandise. It was last released on a bare bones un-restored GC edition in 2000. I think Disney also softly discontinued this title, but I could be wrong. At any rate, I'm expecting Disney to do some form of re-release of this film in the next few years.

"Lilo & Stitch"- Released in 2002 following it's original opening, the success of this film has trememdously taken off. It spawned 3 DTV movies and a popular Disney Channel series. Also, Stitch is now the third highest selling Disney stuffed animal, just under Pooh and Mickey. It has been treated to a 2-disc release already in other countries, so I'm hoping that gets released here too. I think I remember hearing that some parts of the world had the 2-disc "Pocahontas" months before it was announced for release in the US. On the other hand, some countries were treated to 2-disc editions of both "Pinocchio" and "Peter Pan," the later of which is only now being released, and not in the same form.

Here is what I don't think is very likely and why:

"The Sword in the Stone"- Last released in 2001, this film is probably the least popular of the non-package features from Walt's time. It's very clever and entertaining, but lacks the appeal of other features to earn a better release. Also, the GC release was a good release with restored picture, 5.1 sound, deleted song, Sherman brothers featurette, gallary. The only way it could be improved is if they added a making of, which is unlikely. This has been kept an open edition.

"The Great Mouse Detective"- last released in 2002, the DVD treatment was probably the best you could expect from a great film that is underappreciated. It was also restored and had a making of and gallery. The only improvement I can see is the addition of a 5.1 audio track and probably a further restoration. However, this has also been kept an open edition since its release, giving signs that you won't see a re-release anytime soon.

"The Rescuers Down Under"- last released in 2000, I heard this was one of the poorer selling GC releases. It was given almost as bare bones a release as possible, but at least the transfer was animorphic. It's predecessor was released in 2003 with no making of and bare bones features, but both have remained open editions. I think it would be more likely for Disney to re-release the first film in the next 4 years and possibly re-issue TRDU after that, hopefully with some good features for both.

"The Black Cauldron"- Agreeably Disney's greatest flop. At the time, it was the most expensive cartoon ever made and it brought in under $20 million in the US. The only country it had a successful release in was Japan. They even had an attraction in the dungeon of Tokyo Disneyland in which you had to battle the Horned King at the end. It was last released in 2000, but has remained an open edition. However, it was given a non-animorphic transfer and a game and old short as bonus features. The only good thing was the 5.1 surround mix. I would be thrilled to see a 25th anniversay edition in 2008, but it is highly unlikely.

I think the one's I'd most like to see are Hercules and The Black Cauldron, purely from the point of view of getting a decent anamorphic transfer. I actually have Hercules on R2 (replaced my R1 disc because a non-anamorphic transfer is a bit better on PAL than NTSC, the lines making up the image are much more noticeable on an NTSC transfer). I watched it again for the first time in ages last week and really enjoyed it, so I'd love a new edition.

I also think Hunchback is highly underrated, and would love to see that.

I'm sure you'll get your Lilo and Stitch sooner or later in R1, as we've had it for a while now in R2. Though to be perfectly honest, I wasn't that taken with the documentary materials. Might have to give it another look at some point.

Might be interesting to see some kind of box set at some point of the package films. I'm not sure if the appeal is sufficient to give them all their own re-release, but it would be nice to see some kind of over-arching box set putting these films in the context of what the studio was going through at the time. Maybe a box set containing Saludos Amigos, The Three Caballeros, Make Mine Music, Melody Time, Fun and Fancy Free and Ichabod and Mr. Toad.

I would imagine you'd be able to get 2 films per disc without affecting the transfer quality, and then a disc full of bonus materials. I'd certainly buy something like that - although I don't see it ever happening.

Oh, and if they did re-issue those package films, make them unedited, with an introduction by someone like Leonard Maltin like on the Treasures discs putting the films into the context of the time they were released.

I'd definitely buy that, and I think a lot of other Disney fans would too.

I'm very much hoping there will be a SE of Hercules in 2007... It's the 10th anniversary for the film so it would probably be like the Mulan and Pocahontas SE's which would be great IMO

But what about the other 4 package films? I suppose Make Mine Music and Melody Time naturally fit together. It's a bit more of a stretch with Fun and Fancy Free and Ichabod and Mr. Toad. Classic Tales perhaps?

Actually that statement is debatable. Disney's Treasure Planet is, the biggest flop, financially.

Treasure Planet made 38 million compared to The Black Cauldron's 21 million. However, you have to add inflation, and consider that The Black Cauldron only got released to 1,200 or so theatres, while Treasure Planet had over 3200 theatres.

With inflation, in 2002, The Black Cauldron would have made 44.9 million dollars, easily over Treasure Planet's gross, and that's not including the theatre difference.

Also you can throw Home on the Range into the equation. Home on the Range made a little over 50 million. The Black Cauldron, if including inflation for 2004, would have made 56.6 million, above Home on the Range. Treasure Planet would only make 40.8 million in 2004.

Therefore the biggest financial flop for Disney was "Treasure Planet", followed by "Home on the Range", and then "The Black Cauldron".

This is of course not including the package features.

I think Disney regards The Black Cauldron a bigger flop because not very maney people know of it anymore, and a lot of it, outside of profit, was a nightmare. Treasure Planet was beautifully done, and i think eventually will be thought of with higher regard than it originally was. Home on the Range is just something like Oliver & Company to me. It's not going to be very rememberable, but those who liked it will still like it and provide it with a sufficient fan base. I'm not saying that The Black Cauldron doesn't have a fan base, but i think it's hard to market it because a lot of people just don't like it. It's awesome that it's a different feel than any other disney film out there, but that why it's hard to get out. I can see disney holding out on a re-release until they really feel like the have to release it. maybe in a year where there's already going to be some huge DVD releases.

I actually put on The Black Cauldron a few weeks back, and I have to say that I really found it hard work to maintain any kind of interest in it. It's just not that great a film, the characters are bland, and the story just meanders about and has no real sense of urgency. I think it also suffers from not having much of a visual style of it's own, which I think you can say about many of the films of the 70's and early 80's. When you think about how the films from Little Mermaid on each had such a unique style of their own, The Black Cauldron just comes across as a dreadful bore. But I would like to see it re-released, so it could at least have a decent transfer.

DVD Editions

Post by bprovost27 »

I agree with singerguy04 as far as the "more mature" movies getting a "Special Edition or Anniversary Edition" As much as i love the idea of a 10th Anniversary Edition of Hercules, i can see Disney doing something like giving it a corny subtitle. However the subtitles really don't matter to me anymore. I mean i am really excited for the Fox and the Hound DVD simply because i just love the movie.

I really hope that Hunchback gets a 2-disc Special Edition in the same way they designed Mulan, Sleeping Beauty, and Pocahontas.
