I dont think Disney will re-remaster the movies when they are released to HD-DVD in some years... But they will look better!

They will probably not re-remaster them because the remasters and restorations that were used for the current DVDs are more than likely already in HD resolution, or better. So they will all look better, and in addition to higher resolutions the compression will be better so no more blockiness (I'm looking at you BatB...)

What I'm really hoping for though is for Disney to include two different versions of all the old films: restored original version and retouched version. So with things like Cinderella you could have both the movie as it looks on DVD today, like smooth, modern digital animation with all the colour correction and whatnot, and a version without all the digital enhancements and with the grain intact so it actually looks like the original film. But sadly, this is most likely a pipe dream... :(

I would like to know the point of re-releasing those titles already on the Platinum Edition list. I understand that current titles are taken out-of-print after a brief run (I remember searching for TLK2 around Christmas time and being unable to find it...). Will this be a continuous loop or will the next release actually stay in stores for several years? Beyond that, I would like to know how precisely SWatSD, TLK, etc. will be changed--if at all. I was under the impression that they were already remastered and digitally restored and all of that for their original Platinum release. Will they simply be taken out of the vault and placed back on the shelves, or will these select titles be revamped once again?

You could always make a DVD copy of an old VHS or laserdisc to get that untouched grain-and-all version. :D

Same reason that the VHS versions were re-released after several years. To allow people who missed out the first time to pick it up. Of course, with DVD, consumers now expect more in a re-release, be it an extended version of the film, or newer (and hopefully better) transfers and/or bonus features.

Initially, with the 2001, 2002, and 2003 platinums, they were made OOP the following January, so they only had short print runs of October-January.

But with Aladdin and Bambi, I still see copies of them in stores, and Disney's made no formal announcement for either (though, curiously, their sequels are OOP). A good idea would be a two-year print run, which would have Aladdin finally vaulted this October, but for now, all the Platinums since 2004 are in print (man, 5 Platinums in print in October 2006!)

I guess I answered that above.

Nobody will likely know how the re-releases will be handled until they come out, starting in 2008.

Well, they are remastered and restored and all that, but I'm guessing for standard definition quality. I'm guessing that anything pre-CAPS will have to be remastered for high-definition quality later on, since CAPS-animated films are already at a digital high-definition.

I'm hoping that the re-releases will at least add some new bonus material that'll make it worth it for the original consumer to upgrade, aside from a high-definition transfer. We'll just have to wait until 2008 for Disney to unveil their plans for the Platinum re-releases.

But those look like crap , as they were made from masters created using old, inferior technology. What I'd like is the remastered version transferred from the restored original prints/negatives, but without the aggressive grain removal/reduction and digital manipulation that they used for Bambi and Cinderella.

So essentially the clean and pristine prints we have now, only sprinkled with a little bit of grain to give it that "aged, but still looking good" visual quality? Does sound like a pipe dream.

We don't want it to look aged, we want it to look like it did when it hit the theatres. The dvd versions are manipulations, for instance the colors are changed, grain (which is vital to film) is removed, and a dolby digital 5.1 track is made from only a mono source. Of course we don't want to have an awful transfer of the film, but remastering and manipulating are two very different things, which Disney sometimes mix.

Exactly. "We" don't want it to look "new", because a "new" Fantasia (or other old title) would not be the same as a Fantasia from 1940...

Hunchback does not belong to the PE line. Sorry, to disappoint you.

Replace Hunchback with Sleeping Beauty

Here's my upcoming platinum edition schedule:

March 6 2007: PETER PAN
October 2 2007: THE JUNGLE BOOK
February/March 2008: 101 DALMATIANS
October 2008: FANTASIA
February/March 2009: PINOCCHIO
October 2009: SLEEPING BEAUTY

What other platinum editions come in 2010? Maybe SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS or BEAUTY AND THE BEAST?

There are rumours that SWatSD is gonna be released in 2008, instead of Pinocchio. I think it would be weird, starting the PE again before it isn't even finished.

in theory no, because by the time they get to Pinnochio, there is no other new one to be released (except for Sleeping Beauty, but it was previously released as the SE). so when Snow White gets re-leased, then it will be Pinochio, then the old one (beauty), then a new one, then another old one and so forth...

after that - would they just be adding things like Hunchback, and the rest?

I still think it's wrong the "Snow White" and "Beauty and the Beast" are getting re-released to the Platinum line BEFORE "Pinocchio." It will have been 11 years since it's last release by that time! I really wish Disney would change their minds about that. I feel like they should complete the line before they repeat any titles from it.

The pipe dream came true! With Cinderella on 4K! It's so magical that after all these years the worst restoration (after The Sword in the Stone) now has the best restoration!

Re: Question about Disney Platinums...

I've not kept up to date with releases, especialyl after Disney stopped releasing them in my country. Is Cinderella really worth it after the Diamond Edition, Duster? Is there a new blu-ray or the new restoration is exclusive to the 4K disk and that's the only one I could get for a new restoration?
