The only thing this set needs is an art gallery. C'mon Disney! There was an art gallery for Dumbo, sure it wasn't very big, but it was a gallery none-the-less.

Indeed, you would think that Disney would at least put the original theatrical poster on the DVD or something. Maybe we'll get news on more bonus features later. Remember, Disney like to promote their "kid-friendly" extras first.

The only bit that actually looked poor to me was the Pink Elephants sequence (you'd think that'd be one of the easier scenes to restore since you're dealing with a lot of black and neon colors). The Dumbo: 60th Anniversary Edition was in much worse shape than Robin Hood's Gold Classic disc, so even if Disney only makes a partial effort for this like they did with Dumbo, I expect Robin Hood to look quite good.
I know what you are saying about Robin Hood being good.
BUT, why did snow white have no grain in it what so ever and that film is older than Dumbo. Some parts of Dumbo had more grain with white dots than the first release. At lease it was smoother than the new edition.

Even Pinocchio's Gold Classic Edition looked better than Dumbo's Big Top Edition. Even though the first release was grainny it still was more colorful than new edition. It also didn't have an over scan either. So when we watch it on our TV we lose even MORE picture.
So I will stick with my 60th Aniv Edition of Dumbo. :)
Well Snow White had a big-deal restoration done, while Dumbo was undeservedly given a slapdash but respectable job.

Though...I'd have to disagree about Pinocchio's GC looking better than Dumbo BTE. Despite being THX certified on the disc, I found it was much too contrasted at times, and there were more flicks of grain and dirt than one would expect.

PPS. Care to share anything else other than the obvious? Like, say, your thoughts on the bonus features...what you think of the cover...your hopes for the new transfer...how much playability it'll actually get over your GC copy?

I for one am glad "Robin Hood" is getting another go at DVD. It's always been one of my favorites. I remember considdering not buying the GC edition on principle that it was so barebones... then I decided I wanted ALL of the classics (BTW: I have them all). Anyways, a game, sing-along, short, and booklet aren't the greatest special features and the film looked better than the VHS simply because it was on DVD, but didn't appear to have a restoration. I would buy it again just for a cleaner print. If Disney wants to throw in a deleted scene, that's great. I don't expect to much for this film because it's not a general favorite, even though it's easy to meet the characters in the parks and a toy bow and arrow with the fox's face on it was a big seller in the parks and the Disney Store a few years back. I also like the cover art. The best this film has seen in it's three previous releases (Black Diamond, Classic Collection, and Gold Collection). While I do find it odd that "Robin Hood" is seeing a re-release before more popular films such as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," "Hercules," and "Lilo & Stitch," I do feel that it is better to spread all this out. I would hate to see Disney re-release the greats and then be stuck with years of re-issues of lesser knowns and not much to look forward to. It would be nice to see them do this with the lesser knowns once a year. I for one hope "The Aristocats" is the next to get a better release... I just hope it doesn't have a cheasy edition name. But that's probably wishfull thinking. Bring on "The Swingin' Cat Edition!"

I wasnt very excited about this release until i saw the new cover-art. i agree that's it a bit off, but it has a nice set-up and feel about it.

The special features are a little dissapointing though, i'm another fan of the art gallery. Then again, the deleted scene and alternate ending sounds great! I really love that kind of stuff!

Overall i'm happy with this release and will definately be making the midnight run to wal-mart to pick it up on the date of it's release!

I did not see the Fastplay feature advertised on the spine in the cover image. Dare I hope that they are forgoing Fastplay on the Robin Hood release, or is it just a case of preliminary artwork being incomplete?

Actually, it's there. It seems from now on, Disney's going to put a separate Fast Play logo on their spines right above the character pictures. Look closely again and you'll see it. Dumbo did had it that way, and so will Fox and the Hound.

D'oh! The price bubble conceals the Fastplay logo very well.

I'm really not a fan of FastPlay. I always press the menu button on the remote because I like to look at the menu before the movie starts. Unfortunately, it looks like Disney's going to be adding the FastPlay feature on their newer DVDs.

I really like the cover art. Fancy-shmancy! Just like everyone else, I think some new bonus features would be nice, but as long as we get a good transfer, I'm happy!

You honestly do not need to make this a public announcement.
It really wasn't called for.
You could have simply reminded me in a PM.
This is how arguments start.

AND, I only found that funny, that's why I only did a laughy.
Why should I get scowled for wanting to laugh? Don't make sense.

lol, yeah. Also, if you look on the Fox And The Hound SE coverart, you can see it on the DVD spine.

If everyone just did a laughy every time they found something funny, then anytime Loomis makes a post, 100 posts of laughies would follow. Thankfully, many of us don't feel the need to publicly announce that they find something funny with just a laughy unless they can actually contribute to the conversation at the same time.

For example:

TedLogan says: I got the new slipcover for Robin Hood!
Buttercup says: Did you get the DVD as well?
TedLogan says: No, I just wanted the slipcover. I never saw the movie, but I collect slipcovers.
Buttercup says: How'd you get the slipcover?
TedLogan says: I called Disney and told them my dog chewed up mine.
Buttercup says: The things you do for slipcovers. I'm sure you asked your parents to get you DVD slipcovers, but not the movies, for Christmas.
TedLogan says: How'd you know about that?!?
ClarisseStarling says:

So...what did ClarisseStarling contribute to the conversation? Just the fact that she found the conversation amusing. Did she add to it? No. So why did she bother replying? Because she found it funny, which I'm sure other people did too, but she felt that everyone else should know that SHE found it funny.

Either that or it was just another attempt at post count upping as a few people around here are guilty of, there's a few people 'round here who are fond of the one worders! ;)

I'm going to go out on a very far limb here (and by the looks of it, one that might get cut off in the process) and say that I like that "Special Edition" names. heh heh....gulp

Robin Hood is one of my all time favorite Disney movies, I grew up watching it long before I ever saw The Little Mermaid era films. While those films are great, and amazing. Robin Hood really does stand out in my mind as one of the best during that period for Disney.

But PLEASE Disney, include the trailers!

I like some of those titles, too. :D I think the Robin Hood one "Most Wanted" actually is quite nice and I'll buy that DVD anyway, since I don't have Robin Hood on DVD yet, and I always liked that movie. I love Marian's dress
I doubt there are many bonus features for Robin Hood out there anyway, so I'll be fine with these. And honestly, I don't look at the bonus features every time I watch the movie, or does anyone do that?

Well that makes me wonder - if they do NO restoration it is possible that this new edition could look worse than the Gold Collection, since these films deteriorate over time.... Based on this logic, one is better off getting the older GC's.

As for Dumbo, I felt based on the screen caps between the Dumbo 60th and the Dumbo Big Top Ed. that the later looked darker - I don't think darker is better. When I saw the film at El Capitan, I noticed sections of the film looked grainy and very old; it was so obvious that I found it to be a distraction from watching the film. So I was thinking that perhaps these perceived differences in restoration is not due to the quality of restoration at all but perhaps due to how the film has been stored over the years.

Figuring that Disney uses the same restoration technology available AT THE TIME - In other words, look at Dumbo vs. Lady & the Tramp. Lady and the Tramp was far superior in quality - looked amazingly crisp and brand new, whereas Dumbo did not. I saw both "restored" movies at El Capitan this year. Since they were released in the same year, and assuming the same technology used for restoration and equivalent restoration effort put into each film, what accounts for the differences?

Perhaps Dumbo has gone unrestored for too long and irreversible deterioration has occurred. Maybe that was the best they could do with what is left of Dumbo. I know nothing about restoration of films and just thinking out loud here and throwing this out there for discussion.

As for the topic at hand, I have never seen this film so it is not a high priority on my buying list. There's so many other films that Disney has that I have not bought and because of that, I will probably pass on this purchase for the time being.
