Robin Hood: Most Wanted Edition

I love this film. I think it is mostly because it contains many childhood memories for me. I always enjoyed singing the songs. I admit, it wasn't made in the same calibur as say Lady And the Tramp, but I have to say it's better than some of the animated films Disney has put their name on recently.

I agree that the "cute" names in their new dvd releases are unnecessary. It's not going to appeal to me one way or another. For example, I didn't purchase "The Big Top" edition of Dumbo, because I have the older edition, and the extras on it are plenty for me.

I have the Gold Collection version of Robin Hood. I got it free from Disney through an offer they had a few years ago, so double-dipping for this one won't be that big of a deal. It was a childhood favorite of mine, and is a favorite of my daughter's as well. I'm looking forward to the release.

Wonderlicious pretty much summed up my predictions for this release, which will probably be a one-disc, unneeded re-release with no substantial bonus features and a rushed restoration. But still, seeing as how I've never seen Robin Hood, Disney has my attention with this release..... for the moment.

But still, Robin Hood? There has to be an animated classic in bigger demand than Robin Hood. Where's our 2-disc Hunchback? Where's our 2-disc Hercules? Where's our 2-disc Lilo & Stitch? Where's my 2-disc Treasure Planet?

I still support Disney, but they better put some obvious effort into this re-release. Yes, Blu-Ray is just around the corner, but that doesn't mean we can just slack off until then, Disney. The corny name has already turned me off, but if Disney really does put all the bells & whistles into this set, and makes it into an edition that really is "most-wanted", I might just be able to overlook it.

are you guy's sure that this isn't the live action version?
It kinda sounds like it would fit with that one more than the cartoon classic verison IMO.

Ignoring what hasn't been released, a reissue of Robin Hood is potentially exciting, as there is a lot of room for improvement. I completely agree that we should be revisiting at least Hunchback and Hercules first (hopefully one of those will still come this year), but if Robin Hood gets a truly new and improved transfer and 2 discs or even 1 fully-loaded disc, I won't be too upset.

I don't think that anyone would be too upset if the dvd had 2-discs

What would make this a special Most-Wanted Edition would be for it to include the Live Action version starring Richard Todd called "Robin Hood and His Merrie Men" which is long overdue for a release on DVD, and an upgraded version of the animated film.........now that would be Most Wanted by me.

What is wrong with the animated "Robin Hood". I thoroughly enjoy this film every time I watch it, and my grandkids love to sing along with the songs. With a voice cast that is second to none, and music by Roger Miller, I think this one ranks right up near the top of the Disney animated Classics. The animation is far superior to some of those that have come since. In fact I prefer the animation of "Robin Hood" to that of "Hercules", "Emperor's New Groove", and "Pocohontas".

If you left it to my grandkids they would tell you that their favorite Disney movies are "The Jungle Book", "Fox & the Hound", "Oliver & Company", "The Rescuers", and "Robin Hood". Those are the one's that they watch constantly because they can sing all the songs, where available, and they know the story. A new favorite is "The Rescuers Down Under". Number one, most watched Disney Classic for my grandkids is "101 Dalmations", followed very closely by "The Aristocats".

I would just be happy if there was a good/great restoration with acceptable video/audio and a behind-the-scenes featurette (which I don't know if that will happen) with the usual games, sing-a-longs and other things.

The Fox and the Hound - wedon'tknowyetgrade from the GOLD COLLECTION to help promote F&H2.

And now...Robin Hood - wedon'tknowyetgrade from the GOLD COLLECTION.

I can easily see remaining GC DVDs (in print and OOP) getting a new edition, even if it's rushed, as Disney seems to be truly phasing out their Gold Collection.

I predict that sometime between now and 2008...

Pinocchio - we know it's supposed to get a Platinum after the original 10

Saludos Amigos/Three Caballeros - a barebones-under-a-different-banner double-feature package, despite material existing for bonus features

Make Mine Music/Melody Time - ditto.

Fun & Fancy Free/Ichabod & Mr. Toad - ditto.

The Sword in the Stone - don't know what they'll call it, but I'm guessing it'll be the existing disc (which is put together real well), under a different name with a couple new features that make it worth a rebuy (or a buy if people hadn't bought it yet).

The Aristocats - Don't know what or when they'd do this one, as its 35th Anniversary is this year and it got passed over for an Anniversary Edition. But if Robin Hood's getting a new edition, this will likely get one too.

The Black Cauldron - If a 2-disc SE came out with kickass bonus features, I'd die happy. So i guess I'm gonna die disappointed...

The Rescuers Down Under - I can see this and The Rescuers getting a double-feature-set, hopefully with some new features.

Hercules - long overdue for an SE. I rewatched it a couple weeks ago and remembered why I actually like the movie.

Can't think of any other GC's in the Animated Classics line, but beyond those, we still could do with better editions of no-banner titles like The Rescuers, The Great Mouse Detective, Oliver & Company (yeah, yeah, it's billed as Special Edition, but it's not too special...), Hunchback, and of course, Chicken Little.

I purposely left out Treasure Planet because it's a fairly packed disc, and I can only imagine that a 2-disc set would simply port over its bonus features and add a couple unnecessary ones. And of course, Lilo & Stitch was left out because we KNOW there's an SE. Disney's just being a bunch of assholes and not releasing it. And of course, again, I like to pretend Home on the Range doesn't exist.

I adore Robin Hood! Especially since its whole cast is animals.

About the Lilo & Stitch Special Edition, imagine instead of it being in a slipcover, it's in a blue fluffy purse with a "Lilo & Stitch Fluffy Edition" patch sewn on it?

Yes, John Lassater cancelled it, I believe. They'll let him cancel low-profile stuff like that, but not Tinker Bell and the Darn Ring of Bloody Belief, because it's going to make them too much money to pass up. Figures...

Anyway, I doubt we need a reason; Robin Hood doesn't have one, and it's still getting a reissue. A reason helps, but they'll bring it out regardless just to have something to release (and, as previously mentioned, in their continued attempt to really phase out the Gold Collection discs.)

So Disney is saying that Robin Hood is 1.33:1 aspect ratio? IMDB reports:

Yes. All the Disney animated films from 101 Dalmatians to The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh are open matte transfers on DVD. Funnily enough, I never notice any substantial space at the top and bottom of those films, so they must've been awfully cramped when shown in theaters.

Anyone else find it odd that we still haven't heard anything yet about this release? I figured since the news of it leaked out during the summer that we'd be getting it by Christmas, but it's looking less and less likely. Still, I guess since this is such a low profile release, Disney may wait longer than usual and release specs for it in late September/early October.

If all that's substantial in this new release is a "new digital transfer" and a deleted scene with alternate ending...well, I'm disappointed. There's not even a skimpy 6 minute featurette available? No art gallery? No storyboards? I'm not gonna bother asking for a trailer since I know Disney likes to pretend they don't exist.

And I'm guessing "Ye Olden Days" will still be colorized...

I want Robin Hood on DVD and this will be great. But I wish it came with a look at the background of the animation or something else. I just hope they don't release a "Special 35th Anniversary" Edition in 2008.

Sorry, Luke. My computer just hates me. I checked the main page about five minutes before I posted, and the latest stuff on there was still the Baby Einstein bits. Stupid cache...I'll go sit in the corner, now...

Although the alternate ending sounds cool (and admittedly unexpected for something as low-key as this), this release is still sucky and even worse than Fox and the Hound's. We don't even get the simple art gallery from the UK DVD like we are with that other said release. All of these half-baked re-releases really make me worry for films like Hunchback and Hercules.

I for one am pleased with this release. It's not perfect, but it did give more than I thought it would. While I could do with a little behind-the-scenes stuff or even a music video, I will gladly buy this DVD the day it comes out.

I just hope the artwork is cool. I too take great consideration in the cover art...as of now, the Cars artwork is not pleasing me

But I also agree with everyone else: WHERE THE HELL ARE OUR HERCULES AND HUNCHBACK RE-RELEASES!?!?!?!?!!?
