Grease: Rockin' Rydell Edition September 19
Ah, now I see what you're getting at. When I read Lazario's post, I thought his main beef was simply the fact that it wasn't a 2-disc set. I agree, however, that the VH1 special would've been a nice inclusion. In fact, before the specs were released, I was hoping it would be ported over. Hopefully at least most of the info that special revealed will resurface in the new interviews (yeah, John and Olivia's interviews are short, but they seem to be from either the movie's 20th anniversary re-release or the 25th anniversary DVD release. In that sense, I look at them more as archival promotional pieces than meaty features). Even though Grease is one of my all-time favorite films, I expect to be satisfied by this release because despite its enormous popularity, Grease isn't the type of epic that garners too much extensive documentaries. The only room for improvement I see in this release is the inclusion of that VH1 special.

Yes. Basically. I am still confused whether or not that is all that is being prepared for this movie. Makes me think a 30th Anniversary set is SO happening in a couple years!!!Disneykid wrote:Lazario, have you seen the specs list?
There is a lot to complain about with Paramount, most of the time. Now, I know there are fans of the movie here, on this board. But let me tell you, I know fans of this movie off this board who have been waiting for an edition of this movie more than 4 times more expansive than this edition. And they damn-well deserve it. Now, of course all the video features for this film that have been produced newly for this "Rockin' Rydell" edition should be put on the 2nd disc. You said it yourself, the film needs room to breathe. Do you agree? Now, there are still more features this film has that aren't here. I am suggesting that every feature produced for this film released on any and every edition around the world be put on this film's 2nd disc (which I believe has been confirmed won't be in this package) - if Paramount aren't planning on producing anything new for the film other than this new hour of material. Since a lot of this stuff will not cover the ground that the VH1 special covered, it's fair to say the least Viacom-owned Paramount can do is stick most of that special on the 2nd disc. Paramount already distributes VH1 tv-movies and shows on DVD anyway.Disneykid wrote:The main reason why I always hope for 2-discs is because a) the film can breathe on its own on disc one, and b) a second disc can hold more features. Grease, though, seems to be an exception. Paramount's really packed it into a single disc, which worries me only because it may cause compression artifacts in the main feature. If all of the same features that's on the disc now were transferred to disc two like the UK's, would you still be annoyed with Paramount?
Next, as I see it - these new features might be entertaining... but they are concentrated mostly on the film's nostalgic period and not on delving into the film from the bottom up, which I remember the VH1 special did. And VH1 might, now that I think of it, have done more than 1 special on it. I've seen it, it is beyond words amazing. I know people who love the movie, haven't seen the special, and would pay legitimate money for it on VHS/DVD as they would for any documentary on something they're intensely interested in and there have been documentaries on movies released on video. So again, if Paramount's new features are going to be treating this movie like kitsch... it might be nice to give this edition some touch of class. Most of the new stuff produced for this DVD is pure fluff. And that's not all that cool, at all. And it's insulting to the people I know who love this movie and have been waiting for a DVD set as good as Paramount did for Top Gun. Why oh why haven't they ever been able to live up to that 2-disc set? Need I remind everyone that Tommy Boy received a more expansive set of bonus features than this film is about to?
Now, maybe some of these features will end up adding up to be something close to what this DVD package should be. But it's still not enough. And again, imagine this if you will... All Paramount has to do is make a 2nd disc (I expect this movie as a 2-disc set could sell as many copies as Tommy Boy - I'm serious), put that VH1 special on it, divy up the new features they've produced, and add something this set doesn't seem to have : footage of the film's premiere (which I remember seeing on TV!!!). I mean, really - 1 half hour is pretty much all of these new features actually devoted to the making of the film itself total. That's hardly enough to get into the movie, as all prior DVD editions in Region 1 have failed to do.
Another amazing in-depth feature. Not.

I'll definitely be replacing my cruddy 20th Anniversary Edition with this set...and to add salt to the wound, the copy I own is in fullscreen! Bleh!

In my humble, not-so-popular opinion, Grease 2 deserves a special edition more than its predecessor.
