Dumbo

Post by DisneyPrincess »

I think the cover looks pretty cheesy. For such a nostalgic movie, it seems it would have a little more of a vintage look to it.

I have the 60th Anniversary Edition, and I don't watch it that much because it is so sad. I don't know if I'll be purchasing this one, unless it has to-die-for extras.

I pretty much have to say "ditto" to this post.

I have the 60th and watched it once- might break it out again if I get bored sometime, but not really sure if this new release could warrant my first "double dip" if that's what you'd call it. It never was one of my favorites, but I like having it on DVD.

And I agree that it needs more of a vintage look. It looks too CGI to me- almost 3D and nothing like I remember the movie looking. I like the pose though (minus the large mouse  ) and would like it better if it didn't look so modern.

I'll have to think long and hard before getting this one. If it was a 2 disc with a TON of behind the scenes stuff then I could see buying it... if it's a 1 disc with a few games-

No, I don't like it but I will be purchasing it because we don't own Dumbo.
I agree with the post (and the post) above me..it doesn't have a vintage, classic effect. It looks more like a sequel! But a cover is a cover; sad to see it isn't 2-disc. Hopefully more features (not games) get added, not lost...

I think the cover is a little cheesy for my taste. Why does the ringmaster have to be there? Why not Mrs. Jumbo? Or the crows? How about him flying over the tent? Or over Casey Jr.? He also looks kinda weird in the picture, like he got a hold on some bad drugs or something. Also, I think Timothy should be in Dumbo's hat instead of being on the ground. It would look better & would fix that size problem that is obviously shown. This is just my opinion, but I think they should have put a little more thought on what to put on the cover. I like the cover for the 60th edition DVD much more than this one. Even though it was lacking a lot of detail & there isn't much to see, it has charm.

*Finishes vomiting*

Whew, that coverart left a bad taste in my mouth. Why is Timothy half the size of the ringmaster? I LOVED the cover for the 60th Anniversary DVD, particularly because there wasn't anything going on. It was just Dumbo and Timothy sitting there. I do like the logo for this cover though. The tent with "Dumbo" written in it looks great, and if the banner below it said "Special Edition" instead of "Big Top Edition", it would be perfect. If we had that logo with an image like this, then I would probably forgive Disney for every bad thing they've done this year. But alas, I can't do that because this cover just plain sucks. It just isn't simple enough; there's too much going on, and the computer-rendered characters look horrible and off-model.

Some of you may think I'm making too big a deal over some lousy coverart, but I want everything about this DVD to be perfect. I guess that's because I've never seen Dumbo and I just really want to enjoy the movie, whether it's the packaging or the film itself.

I really do not like this cover art. However I will be picking this up, seeing the film will be restored.

I really hope it will be called "Special Edition" and not "Big top Edition" in Europe...

Basically, I like it because I like the banner title at the top, and that's really only because I like the shade of blue they've used.

Yes, I'm superficial.

I doubt this will be worth an upgrade from the already excellent 60th edition, but chances are I'll buy it anyways. It's a sickness I know.

RKO Title Card

Post by mcrutland »

I just hope that Dumbo SE retains the RKO title card. It was good to see the Dumbo: 60th AE and Alice in Wonderland: ME keep it. I was disappointed to see Bambi and Cinderella lose it.

I'm not liking that cover, it just seems rather bland and the space underneath dumbo seems rather empty.

When the cover art for Tarzan: SE first appeared, it was horrible, but Disney changed it because of all the bad comments they had. So it was changed and the characters on the cover didn't look so "flat" anymore. (I think that's what happened, correct me if I'm wrong).

So if we complain to them about the re-release cover for Dumbo, do you think they'd change it? I don't think it would hurt to try.

I merged our interesting discussions with Disney's newly-issued press release (which now appears at the head of this thread. In the process, the poll had to be lost.

Nonetheless, here were the results:

Do you like the cover art?
Yes 48% [ 27 ]
No 51% [ 29 ]
Don't care, I'm not getting it. 0% [ 0 ]

Apparently, everyone who voted will be getting this DVD. Either that, or they couldn't resist the urge to weigh in on the great cover art debate.

I'll probably get it because I only have the VHS of Dumbo, but I don't know. All of the stuff sounds kinda odd. Oh well.

So we lose the commentary track, sound design featurette, and two trailers while the cover art loses the circus tent logo and now looks more claustrophobic. Downgrade on all sides.

The "restored and remastered" picture better be a DTS job for Disney to make such a worthless double dip.

I was afraid of this!

I mean I could live without the sound design featurette and the tent logo on the cover(along with the slipcover, lol) I could even live that it isn't 2 discs, but no commentary or trailers get a BIG  from me!

That transfer BETTER be amazing.

I'm totaly agree with you and DisneyKid. Why is Disney left out the commentaries on this Edition to make it more like the kiddiefied edition rather than the collector's edition? In my opinion, this is the worst double dip EVER!

I still like the cover art but I'm decided to keep the 60th Annv.Edition instead of double dipping. I may buy it if the upcoming review is good along with captions on the pictures. :headshake:

Man, that New Groove Edition for TENG is sure looking pretty attractive right now, isn't it?

Okay, let me be sure I'm fully comprehending this: Lady & the Tramp II, a DTV sequel, is keeping its commentary for its re-release, yet Dumbo, an animated CLASSIC, isn't!? The trailers are gone as well.

This re-release gets a big dubbaya-tee eff from me. Why would Disney just take out actual bonus features and historical reference material to make way for a Disneypedia learning adventure? We all know there was enough room on that disc to port over both of those features and still be able to let Disney have fun with their learning game, so why not include them so that us big-kids can be satisfied? If Disney DVDs were really for families, as they claim they are, then they would have no problem including material lke this.

So, the pros for this release are the new transfer and the features that actually were ported over from the 60th Anniversary disc, and the cons are the loss of a commentary & trailers and coverart that would even make Chuck Norris cry. Poor Dumbo; it deserves better than this.

That transfer had better be clean enough to eat off of, Disney. I'm really starting to doubt your ability as much as I doubt your logic.
