Dumbo: Big Top Edition DVD Press Release & Discussion

I'm gonna go against the crowd and say that the cover art is just "okay"...

From reading the news on the main page, and from seeing the cover, I'm getting the impression that this is aimed for tots. Mainly because of the "learning cards", the DisneyPedia "My First Circus", the storybook, and the sing-a-longs. Disney's past releases weren't like that. The releases had material on them for everyone. But for Dumbo - where's a featurette? Or a complete restoration? Something that folks like us would appreciate. When the film was first released (in the 40s), was that the intended audience? Small children?

I'm don't know if I'll be getting this one. I think I'll wait for a review.

It didn't get major re-releases either unlike most of Disney's films. Eventhough it's as much a milestone as, say Lady and the Tramp, 101 Dalmatians and Junlge Book (in my opinion)

Milestone? Well, it hardly broke new ground technically when it was released. Compared to the other four of the first five animated features, Dumbo was both "simple" and "cheap". But Disney very much depended on its success when it was released in 1941.

nah, Dumbo gets drunk, his mother is locked up for violent behaviour after being abused by mean little children. And all while slaves set up the circus tent in the pouring rain.

That's enough for today's "PC parents" to go completely crazy. They should just give us that meaty set instead of a kiddie edition. But knowing Disney, we'll get the kiddie set.

well if Jungle Book is considered a milestone (it rehashes animation from Ichabod and Mr Toad, 101 Dalmatians, Sword in the Stone and a bunch of other movies and set the trend for movies in the 70's to do so as well, even worse) than I'd most definitely consider it a milestone. Even for being simple and short. Big and epic doesn't automatically equel groundbreaking.

The star makes the cover Dumbo look cheesy. Other than that I guess it's okay, but change the Special Edition name PLEASE.

I certainly don't disagree with you. Dumbo, although perhaps not groundbreaking, is definitely a classic. The most groundbreaking thing they did with the animated features of the 1960s was cost-cutting.

This looks like a cheesy direct to video sequel of Dumbo...

And what is with "Big Top Edition?" This sounds like the cheesy special edition names for current comedy movies...

to me the cover art looks like a winner of a 3rd grade art competition. It's really too simple and it looks like something that someone threw together in a hurry. I would've prefered something like the back cover of the 60th anniversary edition. It really should have some more character's or something on it. and please please please just make it say special edition, "Big Top Edition" kinda makes me sick to my stomach....

i'm going to buy this one also, becuase I don't own the previous version. I have no problem with the cover art, and that it is not a 2-disc. As long as the transfer is a huge improvement I will be happy.

I'm not sure if "remastered" means "restored", but if it looks like it was never touched at all, there will be riots in the streets

I'm not sure what to say.

I was expecting that this release would show how classic this movie is and it looks kinda cheesy and kiddy. I figured it would be a loaded 2-disc edition with making-of features and new commentaries, NOT DisneyPedia clips and playing cards. Nothing like the format for Bambi or Cinderella.

The cover is not terrible. It isn't great. They certainly could have done a lot more but it is better than the 60th Anniversary Edition.

And what is with these new titles. First, "The New Groove Edition" and now "The Big Top Edition".

And is Disney now doing 1-disc re-releases? And they dont give us anything new that is worth buying the disc. Is there any hope for Fox and the Hound?

I might get this just because I dont have the movie. But I have to say that I am a little disappointed Disney.

I know it suck, but it is jsut a business. I mean I have so many double dippers, becuase I never got to get the 1st DVD release. Like for example...Breakfast at Tiffany's, Feris Buller's Day Off, etc. I mean I had the change of always getting them, but I was not into DVD as I am right now!!! A lot of people believe it or not are discovering DVDs (meaning going and buying them once a month or so) no more than 2 years. Now a lot of these re-release have come before. This is another way of giving these new comers (like me), to get a change to grab the new DVD. Disney is not pulling a gun to you head and saying to buy it... no one has to buy it. Even with Tarzan, and ENG...the releases in my opinion were the same thing.

The artwork of Dumbo looks okay but not great. I think that Dumbo: 60th Anniversary was kind of sad looking. But I will still get Dumbo.

True. But then, if you're going to rerelease something the same way as before, you might as well continue the production of the original DVD.

I don't like the cover. The 60th Anniversary Edition cover was much better and more related to the movie itself. Plus, here, I don't like the way Dumbo's drawn, although it's important to note that, contrary to 99% of American covers of Disney DVDs, for once, the cover is not overcrowded with characters lol

LOL...can you imagine a Dumbo cover with Mrs. Jumbo, Mr. Stork, the gossipy elephants, the pink elephants, and the roustabouts all crammed on there? They'd toss in some clowns in for good measure, but deliberately forget the crows. I guess it's good for the sake of covers everywhere that Dumbo doesn't have very many major characters.

I have the 60th Anniversary Edition; I'm going to see what sorts of features emerge before I decide whether or not to by the new edition.

I'm not a big fan of the new cover; it's OK and Dumbo looks really cute, but I liked the simpler look of the last release of this movie.

Yeah, I agree with you. I was expecting something more of this release, but if Disney at least gives us better video quality and keeps the extras of the previous DVD edition, I'll be content, although it would've been nice to see a 2-disc edition (depending on whether there had been enough material, both old and new, to fill up two discs, of course). And yes, these odd names for these special editions confuse me. I'd prefer seeing plain "Special Edition" there instead of all these creative names Disney thinks of. Oh well.
