Thanks Luke! I'm going to let them know how mad I'm at them. iWe have to stop them before they add the new musical sequence "We'll be there" to The Rescuers - Special Platinum Edition.

Disney would go down the toilet if they touched the content of Snow White.

Boy, I'm I glad I don't have to talk with MickeyMouse Boy on the phone.

I also agree that they should've left the theatrical print alone, but to be honest it didn't bug me. And if I hadn't read about this issue, I would never have know about it.

Disney marketing guy 1: "Look at this feedback we got from customer service. Someone called and said they noticed that we changed the 1.5 sec scene with the crocs. And they didn't like the extras. And if we change Aladdin we will sell only 9,999,999 units instead of 10,000,000...maybe we should consider this. Take a look..."

Disney marketing guy 2: "Yeah, but check this out - he also said he collects Disney DVDs and he needed it - so let's make an Aladdin 3 disk set with a whole disk of games and coming attractions and charge $60 - you know he'll buy it anyway"

guy 1: "Great idea! Mike will give us a raise for this!"

You tell 'em, MMB.

I'm going to call tomorrow. Thing is, I'm not going to say I'm a Disney freak. I'd rather come across as an average consumer. That way, they'll probably take me more seriously (it really should be the other way around, but . . .)

I agree. I would never want to talk to MMB on the phone either :P And maybe it was a little unfair to blast into the operator, BUT...

As much as it pains me to say this, I have to agree with MMB wholeheartedly.

As Kim says - if we (the 'Net community) hadn't discussed it, you wouldn't have known.
And that is the problem. Disney is advertising something as 'original' when it clearly isn't as far as the fans can tell, but the DVD buying public WOULDN'T know, and that is what Disney are banking on.

In all fairness, I haven't got this yet, so I can't say how it affects me personally. However, in principle I am wholeheartedly against this. As has been said here, it isn't just 'one scene'. They have CHANGED something, and it sets a bad precedent.

As soon as I receive my copy, I will actually lodge a complaint, for what it is worth. I never do this sort of thing, but this is pretty rough. It didn't worry me at first, but the more I think about it, the more mad I get.

It isn't too late. New copies of Absent Minded Professor were released. Willy Wonka got Widescreen.

Fists in the air. Power to the people. We CAN change it if we all get together and PUSH!

I remember reading that the animators of producer Don Hahn didn't like the way the crocodiles looked in the original version. Therefore, the animaters made them rounder. I'm going to complain about the round crocodiles too! I heard that that after Mufasa's ghost speaks to adult Simba, the clouds around Mufasa dissapear. Why the change? :? I'll let them know that I wanted the "Making of the Lion King", all the missing features from the laserdisc including the version of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and the original theatrical version without any changes.

Disney didn't put Randy Randy Fullmer's audio commentary on the DVD. :( I know the laserdisc has it.

Yes, I do like the IMAX version with the bright colors, but I would like to see the orignial film as well.

I agree with Loomis and everyone else here. Disney doesn't have the power! We do! we all think that a company like disney will never listen, we think that our calls and complaints will not be heard! But Disney is about to get what they deserve! They might not fix the Lion king this time around,I wish they would since Universal did it with their back to the future DVD, why do you think Universal did it? was it cause of the average joe? NO!! the average joe could care less! the average joe doesn't own the WS Laserdis. The average joe could care less if it was WS or P&S! so who complaint? US!!!!!! the collector's! we as collector's give Disney more money than the soccers moms and average joe! they're more Disney fans that support Disney not just DVD wise but Theme parks, Theatrical Features, web sites, and buying their merchandise! Without us Disney would just be a Kiddie company going bankrupt now! We the fans have pulled Disney out of the dark ages again and again! So who's Disney going to listen to? WE THE FANS!!!!! :x ::slams a ruler on a table::

Actually MMB, Universal changed BTTF (and ET) because they have a profitable realtionship with Steven Speilberg - from partnerships with Amblin Entertainment to distributing Dreamworks films and home videos. They simply don't want to upset their biggest cash cow.

I think it's unlikely they would change BTTF unless Bob Gale (and Steven Spielberg himself) insisted on it. (And also, don't you think it's odd Universal agreed to the replacements before the official US streetdate of BTTF, despite the fact Universal International had been informed of the problem on their international release for over 8 months? That just shows the true Universal. Not only did they not give a damn about the complaints (I complained three times, and never got a reply, not even to a snail mail letter with an SAE), they knowingly let the same faults get duplicated on their US release because they couldn't even be bothered to inform Universal US.) Oh, and one last thing, Universal International still managed to cock-up the replacement BTTF 3 PAL discs. Universal simply don't give a toss.

To make this more on topic after my little rant, I think somebody needs to see if a highly visible general DVD site like DVDFile or The Digital Bits will publish a letter or petition telling Disney how disappointed the DVD community was with the supplements of the Lion King DVD. No slight to this site Luke, but I feel a non-Disney site would carry more weight at Disney then if the petition/whatever came from UltimateDisney (or for that matter The Laughing Place, Mouse Planet etc).

The IMDB shows this
in alternative versions they wrote:A IMAX special version of The Lion King is set to be released on December 25, 2002 with a re-recorded version of Circle of Life. The IMAX version will contain digital enhancements and touch-ups to allow for the increased screen size. For example, faces will be drawn in for characters who were too small to have one in the standard 1994 releases.
Does anyone know anything about this?

Your voices CAN make a difference.

Do you all remember when I called complaining about Disney not offering the lithographs when pre-ordering the giftset? They changed it!

So call, email, call back again. If you call the CS number - tell them you would like to speak with someone in the marketing dept. Tell them to give you a name of someone you can contact.

I'll be calling as well.

My guess is that Disney added more detail to the animals in the "Circle of Life" during the restoration and enhancement process. I don't believe the song itself was re-recorded. That's all I know.

I agree with Ariel: let's call and e-mail Dinsney Enterprises or DVD and complain. :)

My first post...

Post by Commodore Barbosa »

Hi Everyone,

I've been lurking these boards for a while, but this whole Lion King DVD thing has gottem me to post.

At first I didn't think too much of the changes made to the original theatrical release of TLK, but in the last 2 days after having bought the DVD I've seen several commercials saying that the disk features both the Special Edition (true) and the Original Theatrical Release (well...sorta not true).

Having watched the original first, the obvious little changes really got under my skin, especially after having seen these commercials. So this thread inspired me to call BVHE myself.

I talked to a very nice lady named Brenda, and we were on the phone for near a half hour discussing all the exact moments where the "Original Theatrical Release" deviated by having scenes input into it from the SE. She took down chapter #'s, running time #'s, I even gave her the spots on the Supplement disk where the original versions of both the crocodile scene and the cloud scene are presented.

She said that she would be presenting all of this information to both the Technical Dept. as well as the Marketing Dept. and that I would recieve a call back concerning a resolution. She even said that when she got home she was going to check this stuff out herself

The whole "SFX" scene is a totally different story as far as I'm concerned, although presenting it with an explanation in the commentary should/would have been acceptable...

Here's to hoping some good comes of this!

I noticed that the zebras in the "I can't wait to be king" part look blue. I think they over-brightened that part. At the end, once Simba reclaims Pride Rock, they look nice and black again, so I know it wasn't my TV. Has anyone else noticed this??? The new colors are beautiful, but I would like to see the original, without the brightened colors, just they way I saw it in the theaters with my grandma when I was a kid. :) and those darn crocks are just UGLY Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest. :D

Welcome, Commodore Barbosa! Every time a lurker registers and posts, an angel gets a pair of wings! ;)

In all seriousness, though, that's really awesome that you went through the changes with them. I doubt we'll really see the theatrical cut on DVD (outside of bootlegs), but they really need to hear our displeasure. Job well done...and again, welcome and hope you enjoy the forums! :D
